The 5 Sample Thread

Post by Mr. J Selectah »

What are some of your favorite samples? Which ones have been sampled, at least five times (or more than...) in Rap?...the point is to get the originals, and then the maximum artists/groups you know, that sampled the song throughout the years, mostly (and preferly) 90's please, and it has to have 5 samples minimum, or more...this could be a nice thread, to know more artists/Mc's/DJ's/Producers that used some of your favorite samples and to help identifying the originals as well...

I was about to just move this to the "dope samples" thread because I
didn't think people would participate. But since there's been responses,
it can ride.
Good work so far, J Selectah.
Also, I did a "Who Flipped It Better" for that Bob James cut on the blog.
For some reason I can't link it from work. I've been collecting tracks for
part2, so I can probably add to that list and take some from it for part2.
Thanks.

 Oh man, you hit on the head. :pause:
I don't know if a truly complete set of Nautilus samples can EVER be
completed. I think they did a bunch at Unkut, a LOT, and still missed many.
http://www.unkut.com/2008/10/unkut-orig ... mes-unkut/

Just a thought: If anyone is down, I think the best way would be to do
maybe 10 songs at a time of Nautilus samples? It sounds like a lot, but trust,
there are HUNDREDS of songs that sampled it.

I knew somebody somewhere had to have compiled a list! And I can't believe I missed Keep Hushing, My Mind Spray and Follow the Leader (in this 1st round alone). Just thinking about who sampled it made my head explode (double :pause:).

It's on you Verge, I think I'll move on to Babe Ruth's Mexican

^Ah shit, another one.
I guess Roy got the James Brown jawns covered. How about Isaac Hayes
Walk On By?
:shit:
112 - "Call My Name"
Almighty RSO - "He's Gonna Catch It"
Assassin - "Connexion"
Black Rock & Ron - "Rap Life"
Bushwick Bill - "Only God Knows"
Compton's Most Wanted - "Hood Took Me Under"
Cypress Hill - "Whatta You Know"
Faith Evans - "No Other Love"
Foxxy Brown - "Chyna Whyte"
Hooverphonic - "2 Wicky"
Kanabis - "Walk Under a Full Moon's Light"
Kingpin Skinny Pimp - "Long Story"
MF Doom - "Dead Bent"
Notorious B.I.G. - "Warning"
Pete Rock - "Walk on By"
Sounds of Blackness - "Everything's Gonna Be Alright"
Tupac - "Me Against the World"
Volume 10 - "Mom & Deb"
Westside Connection - "Do You Like Criminals?"
Wu-Tang Clan ft Isaac Hayes - "I Can't Go to Sleep"

And that's just what "the-breaks" has listed, there's more. I'm not even
gonna go near Isaac Hayes, though. Too much.

That's a TRUE challenge: Who flipped Nautilus better or best? Wouldn't even go there, right? I mean, obviously we all have our faves, but what's your top 3 (or 5 or 20)?

Chyskillz isolated an interesting part for Throw Ya Gunz, in a way that made the sample sound less played out.

Pete Rock made it sound almost romantic, in keeping with the original Take You There.

Then there's the matter of which emcees sounded better over the same part of the song, Ghost/Rae/Cappa or EPMD/Redman?

My fave is still (believe it or not) Ultra's Ced-Gee (Delta Force One). Ced (and Paul C) really brought out the eerieness out of an already eerie song.

Yeah, that's a tough challenge. I actually agree about the Ultra one. You also
have Godfather Don flipping it for Raise It Up in not the most obvious way.
Funny, he also uses the Onyx joint for the hook.

Nah Verge, you wasn't sure about the sample back then, and only remained a few possbilities, either way i wouldn't question myself twice about it...
And about Nautilius being obvious? No, it's monstrous, when i saw the choices for that sample, imediatly eight different more occured on my mind, and not all from the USA...

Later on in the thread it was solved, though. This dude "First Beard"
hipped us to it:

First Beard wrote:Yo, that IMP sample (and the others) is a wes mongomery track.

The drums, dark keys, + bass are all part of the OG break. Its slowed down quite a bit. Its a beast of a sample.

Cant remember the record its off of. Its a white boardered cover (most of the wes mongomery albums are) with a city scene. Its the last cut on side A i believe.
Which sparked my memory banks:

Anyway, I'm down for the Nautilus collection for sure. Let's keep it
focused, if you guys are down with this too. We can do it like this, if you
want:
Either post a bunch that you know now or soon.
Or as you're listening to stuff and catch one, post it here. We can make
this an ongoing thing until we have say....100 of them?
There's definitely enough.
Or we can start with whatever list that "the-breaks" has
and the ones that "unkut" had and add a lot more to them.
Either way, this will take months as we just bump this thread every time
we hear one.

This will be the most comprehensive Nautilus sample compilation ever
made, if we're all down.

Maybe a separate thread may be necessary, IF heads are down. Let me
know. I gotta lot on my plate right now but I will most def do what I can.

@verge thanks again. that is such an ill track...

on the Dirty Harry mixtape Nas put out before Street's Disciple dropped, there was a remix of Life's a Bitch that used that teddy pendergrass sample, but only over Nas's verse. there was a shitty techno beat over AZ's verse for some bizarre reason. could've been a great remix but turned out only half-great...
