You Are There: Bobbito demo battle ca. 1998
While weגre waiting for more S&B shows, letגs go back for a sec and make believe itגs 1998. Here are two demos that competed against each other one night that year, placed in the order Bob played them.

For those who heard these and remember them (i.e. Verge), pretend that youגre hearing them for the first time. Forget who you remember or think won back then, what do you think of each of them with 2010 ears? And of course those who ARE hearing them w/virgin ears, who wins? Vote by leaving a comment.

Both are dope, but I dig the second joint more, thanks for these aleph.aleph wrote:While weגre waiting for more S&B shows, letגs go back for a sec and make believe itגs 1998. Here are two demos that competed against each other one night that year, placed in the order Bob played them.

I actually wasn't around through most of 98 and all of 99 so I never heard
these. My boy had caught me up on a lot of stuff in 01 that I missed in these
years, but he must have missed this night.
This is a tough one. Both the beats are great. I would go with the first one if I
was more of a sneaker head, but I'm not, so I'll go with Beirut.
Thanks again aleph.

Sounds like something Hiero would have used. Maybe a Bob James sample?Roy Johnson wrote:I'd end up voting for track #1. Now I'm wracking my

Ahh... You know I love the phrasing of this post, aleph. Let's pretend we're (back) in the 90s listening live.
Hmm, I like the concept of the first one and it has a dope melody too. I dig the Nas/Biggie vocal cuts at the end!
Vocal-wise I dig the second one and it has a nice flow to it.
I think the second track won that night.
More threads like these please!

Wow, this is a toss up. I'll go with... O.R.B "Beirut", but barely.
Roy, that sample reminds of the Souls Of Mischief demo song "Cab Fare"

Well, the numbers say Beirut wins, but the comments make it look more like a tie. Which is appropriate bc the demos couldn't be more dissimilar. I enjoyed reading what everyone liked about each one.
Thanks for the kind words, fellow fiends, but I'm not sure I recorded any more battles where Bobbito or the artists themselves didn't eventually release the demos, so this may be it. (Damn) I'll definitely look around tho.Verge wrote:Yeah, aleph, you're more than welcome to make threads like this whenever you feel like it. Fuck it, you should just do random demo battles, because this is fun as hell.aleph wrote:Well, the numbers say Beirut wins, but the comments make it look more like a tie. ^That's what I was gonna say. It doesn't have to be the exact battles that
took place on the shows.
Though I do think we have the demos from a night in 99 where it was 4 of them:
I Walk A Line
Binkis joint
Back Alley demo
Dysfunkshunal - Hi's And Lo's
took place on the shows.

Roy, Verge, I too was thinking this would be the only way I can keep doing it except for the fact that unfortunately I'm not a bottomless demo well. My supply is drying up! I came across a 94-95 tape that listed a few demos that I crossed out on the tape cover, meaning I erased them out of existence. Anybody heard of K-Style? Big Mass? DMO? That pissed me off, I should've blacked out those titles completely, rendering them unreadable.
Yeah, Verge there was that battle between three of em: Showtime's I Walk The Line, Dysfunctional Fam's Feelin Da Highs, and returning champ Binkis' Beat You In The Head. Which one is the Back Alley demo?

I hate to get props wrong, but I'm pretty sure this was a Digital Stimulation upload.

If people are game, we could post all 4.
As far as this battle goes, looks like we have a tie!
Gotdam now you guys got me rethinking the way I should present my stuff. I was gonna post a zip of about 14 ripped joints, some of which are demos but should I do it this way instead, as a competition? I donגt knowג¦
I don't have the audio of Bob announcing the winner, but I'm sure that Sneakers won that nite. I think it was a personal fave of Bob's, perhaps even his fave joint about sneakers and sneakerheads. Aside from being dope, it had the added gimmick of being topical which listeners went for. Beirut was probably too subtle for heads to get into for that time...
Here's the entire audio for the battle

Getting around to these for the first time on a Sunday morning, and though both have nice mellow loops, Sneakers is obviously more of a coolout joint and I'm feeling the emcee's style more right now (even though the O.R.B. mc is better). Sneakers.
And Thank You!
