Love me some Gangsta NIP (pause). First two albums are some classic SP shit.

Brotha Lynch's first album, and newest album for that matter. Gravediggaz first album, obviously.

Horrorcore has the potential to be dope when it's done right. When it's done wrong, it has the potential to be ICP.

Anyone remember that Kool Keith project "Thee Undatakerz?"

There's so much Horrorcore out there, I love it as well! I got a lot of favorites. Here is two:

Right, too many horrorcore out there...but it's more actual than anything else, groups like Psych Ward and it's "associates" are some of the most consistent, because they have been making it since the 90'...anyways, y'all could check this blog out...never mind about the Esham album, i added that page a few months ago, to my favorites so i wouldn't miss it...it has lots of variety...

I like this thread because I'm not familiar with much more besides Gravediggaz and Kool Keith lampooning the genre.

BUT DAMN KEITH CRACKS ME UP

With the eighth body in my trunk my elbow bleeds with lumps
Walkin from the sanitation dump with rotten skulls
On my waterbed with Miller beer kegs
Blood in my cabinet, ears in my closet
Watchin the Raptors play the Houston Rockets

Parked in a parking lot behind Burger King
Eatin a raw pack of chicken wings
With blood on my fingers I blast a CD by the Staple Singers
The cops told me to turn it down,
They like my shoes from Buster Brown
I went up the block an bought some incense
For the wrong smells in the air conditioner vents
Hey kid need twenty cents havin a cook-out with my neighbor
How ya like the meat flavor mmmm

With all the 'early Esham' sentiment in this thread...

...are you somehow suggest his best album wasn't 2001's 'Tongues' or is that just not considered a horrorcore album?

I was never a fan of the Flatlinerz but I always loved this track, especially the beat, piano sample is ill:
<object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/9TDkJ2KxTDU?fs ... ram><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/9TDkJ2KxTDU?fs=1&hl=en_US" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object>
Co-sign 100X:

Maybe someone here can ID this track for me. A very weak description, I know, but it's all I remember. Pretty sure the name of the track was "Devil In Me". Dude rhymed real grimy devil sounding, the beat was fast paced and dope. It's from between 93 and 95, I believe. I had it off a radio tape from one of the shows on WNWK. Never heard it again after that.

I like KKKill The Fetus and Dead Flowers, and Closed Casket but I haven't heard "Tongues". I find it hard to believe that any artist that was around in the mid 90s released an album post 2000 that is better than their 90s ones. the only post 2000 Esham stuff I know is a track called something like "Woo Woo Woo" which sounded like an attempt to go commercial and clubby, sounded more like 50 Cent than old Esham. but I will check out Tongues though, cheers for the recommendation

No, I feel you, but honestly 'Tongues' to me is the peak of Esham's work, his magnum opus. It's still dark, but instead of the blatant shock of his earlier work, he traded a lot of the blatant profanity to focus more on a slow, subtle suicidal soundscape. It's mature without being contrived, and a logical progression from his Detroit Dogshit/Mail Dominance years.

From a production stand point, it's him and his brothers making the beats of the highest quality he's EVER had. Polished without catering to a mainstream sound, it's the equivalent of a faithful big budgeted Hollywood remake of a beloved indie horror film.

At this time Esham also produced the last truly great Kool Keith album 'Spankmaster,' which has aged far better than it by all means should have.

Memphis Tennessee and areas of the Mississippi Delta have had a long tradition of Horrorcore or Devil Shit. 3-6 Mafia ended up going mainstream but the early Triple Six Mafia underground shit was satanic. Some breif research should find you most of the original Devil Shit albums.
Evil Pimp is a current Memphis satanic rapper.

Insane Poetry from Cali had a dope album.

The Gravediggaz' first album aside, all of the old Triple Six Mafia/Hypnotize Camp tapes are the best "horrorcore" records ever made. The 1992-1996ish timeframe is pretty unmatched as far as what they were putting out; Evil Pimp's first tapes, The Koopsta Knicca, all the "Underground for the Summa" tapes...DJ Paul was just on another level with his beats and the lyrics are some of the most unsettling you'll ever hear.

A quick Google search will net you a lot of these old tapes. God bless the interwebz.

Some Memphis classics to start y'all off...these are dubs of the original tapes so they sound a little muddy (the way they SHOULD sound, imo).

Nice one, though i hate it when same samples are used on different tracks. Once i listen to a joint, its sample is permanently related to it in my mind. Now i'm not able to enjoy 'Dreadlock - creep wit me' properly, 'cause i'm already used to 'Universal - destiny' (later release but i heard that one first). TROY's 'who flipped it better' series is a headache to me!

[EDIT]
Maybe not strictly hip-hop but sometimes i'm into Spectre's (aka Ill Saint, if you wish) work. His label Wordsound has some other heads too, ready to bring the horror! (Prince Paul among others)

^Nice.
I hear you, man.Once I already know a sample from a certain song and then it here it flipped in the same way, I can't get with it. Like there's some stupid expensive record that uses the same sample as I think Street Smartz "Metal Thangz" and I won't even listen to it cause to me it's the "Metal Thangz" beat.

Tongues is pretty solid. 'Mr. Negativity' is one of the best songs he's ever made. Still, I much prefer 'Dead Flowers.' That album is just so damn consistent.

Great song, although is it just me, or are the sound effects on there louder than those found on any other rap record in the history of rap?

Also, "Walkin On the Flatline" is his best album intro-cut ever. Love it so much.
