What are your favorite mid-90's tracks on production?

Reminisce about the golden era of hip-hop.

What are your favorite mid-90's tracks on production?

Post by Mr. J Selectah »

I'm talking in terms of production, USA only, let's say...ahmm from 1994 to 1997, mid-90's...let me point out a few ones...and this is all random, whatever comes to my mind...
Just notice, it doesn't matter here, who's producer was getting the most street credit back then or who's overrated, it's just East/West Hip Hop, and the only thing that matters are your personal tastes...

Del-Corner story (1996)

<object width="480" height="385"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/d-7fkSF6d7U?fs ... ram><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/d-7fkSF6d7U?fs=1&hl=pt_BR" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="480" height="385"></embed></object>

I've been trying to find the samples for this one like...damn, Del did some genious work here, fuck it, the whole "Future development" was incredible...to me, one of the most well produced tracks from its genre, complex styles...plus, the melancoly and nostalgy all over it, my kind of s***...

Lord Finesse feat. OC and KRS One-Brainstorm B.S.K. (no gimnicks remix) (1996)

<object width="480" height="385"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/4-aI_rbkx0I?fs ... ram><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/4-aI_rbkx0I?fs=1&hl=pt_BR" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="480" height="385"></embed></object>

Flawless styles, Lord Finesses mark is untouchable...

The Boogie Monsters-The beggining of the end (1997)

<object width="480" height="385"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/iGKyVEidiP8?fs ... ram><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/iGKyVEidiP8?fs=1&hl=pt_BR" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="480" height="385"></embed></object>

This still gives me "chills", every time i remember the first time i've heard it, shit is absorving, this is a true underground sound...

<object width="480" height="385"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/YXjp1DdWszs?fs ... ram><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/YXjp1DdWszs?fs=1&hl=pt_BR" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="480" height="385"></embed></object>

Everything about "Nocturnal" was unique, don't know why some people always tend to hate on this, just because of Black Moon or Smiff-N-Wessun previous work, it's ridiculous...i coudn't make my mind between "undastand" and "soldiers gone psycho", but i just had to go with this one, great fucking use of a sample...

<object width="480" height="385"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/l97BKVro0TE?fs ... ram><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/l97BKVro0TE?fs=1&hl=pt_BR" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="480" height="385"></embed></object>

These two ears of mine, have heard so many dark shit all over the years, but few ever got close this one, this atmosphere is just...the production is crazy...

Da Germ, no doubt, one of the best use of horns i've ever heard, plus all his Vls material is dope...Da Cru, a reference from those days, always loved the track "my everlovin", with that sample from Sade, shit was just so relaxing, and the collabos on that album, from Ras Kass, to Black Rob and Lox, damn...also very inovative from the production point of view, used to hear it a whole lot...just don't forget y'all, only from 1994-1997...

damn, everything from the first post is amazing!that's exactly the type of productions I LOVE.The Del track, Understanding, the Finesse one are all pure awesomeness

<object width="280" height="185"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/5wig9Znw2QE?fs ... ram><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/5wig9Znw2QE?fs=1&hl=en_US" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="280" height="185"></embed></object>

I've always admired the production on this track. The way it starts with just the beat and the background melody and the little details that develop a little later. It's just great.Maybe it has something to do with the way channel live flow on it, but IMO an amazing beat

<object width="280" height="185"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/-9eqcX5gho8?fs ... ram><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/-9eqcX5gho8?fs=1&hl=en_US" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="280" height="185"></embed></object>

The piano here is as dope as it can get.Gives the track a menacing feel that is emphasized by the bassline.Again, three of them really deliver here and that really compliments the overall feel

<object width="280" height="185"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/9Lr9Vxt4GH8?fs ... ram><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/9Lr9Vxt4GH8?fs=1&hl=en_US" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="280" height="185"></embed></object>

I can honestly say The Infamous and Hell On Earth are some of the best produced albums in hip-hop.Amazing haunting production by Havoc.I really couldn't choose which one to post so I'm postng an unreleased track from those sessions.Reach is, to me, cinematic while being minimalistic.Pure awsomeness.Nothing more to say

<object width="280" height="185"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/_SCI0Bjm-fE?fs ... ram><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/_SCI0Bjm-fE?fs=1&hl=en_US" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="280" height="185"></embed></object>

...

<object width="280" height="185"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/ZXGg8WgAT0w?fs ... ram><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/ZXGg8WgAT0w?fs=1&hl=en_US" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="280" height="185"></embed></object>

<object width="280" height="185"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/HJht8-l9nxw?fs ... ram><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/HJht8-l9nxw?fs=1&hl=en_US" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="280" height="185"></embed></object>

I NEVER get tired of those bells...I'll try to narrow down a few more when I have the time

The CRU album dropped in '97, damie.

But no doubt, that album bangs.

I just gotta say that I am hearing a lot of great beats, but not really big production in this thread.

Right, because people always go for the predictible or obvious choices, when it comes to classic production, either from DJ Premier, from Pete Rock, from Buckwild, Large Professor, Easy Mo Bee, whatever...and that's exactly my point, when i refer to each ones personal tastes...look at my first post, you see some distint sources of production, and the tracks either have some stand-out point, different, very personall...

Ak Skills - Check The Flava never gets old to me
Shabazz The Disciple - Crime Saga, one of my favorite dark beats ever
Sunz Of Man - No Love Without Hate, I was addicted to that song when it first came out, I like the drums on that beat especially
Red Hot Lover Tone - 4 My Niggaz feat. M.O.P. Organzed Konfusion & Biggie is another dope Buckwild production.

Seems like no matter how hard I dig into more obscure releases of the mid 90's, Premier, Pete Rock, RZA, Easy Mo Bee and D.I.T.C. are better than them
