Best debut verse/song?
Whereas some rappers take a while to establish themselves - Jay Z for example - others make a huge impact first chance they get.
Setting aside how their careers panned out, whats your favourite debut?
Nas - Live At The Barbeque
Big L - Yes You May remix
Rakim - Eric B For President
Redman - Hardcore
AZ - Lifes A Bitch
Big Noyd - Give Up The Goods
Masta Ace - The Symphony
Snoop Dogg - Deep Cover
OC - Fudge Pudge
Buckshot - How Many MCs
Add on...I'm only talking official debuts though, not some demo tape that Bobitto played once in 1992.

He gets hated on, but Capadonna's verse on Ice Water is dope. Some may consider Ice Cream his debut though, same lp still.
He took Gza's spot with his Ice Water verse, I'd still love to hear what Gza's verse was over that beat.
Ice Cream was also supposed to be a Liquid Swords beat, but Rae took it.
It's not their debut, and Shook Ones came before (and his verse was dope on that) but Prodigy's verse on Shook Ones Pt 2 is kind of like the start of his new flow/delivery for me.
AZ, of course.

Kool Keith: I wore a straw hat with a feather to the last Source Awards. When I got to Madison Square Garden everybody was looking at me. When I got back home I seen everybody and their mother in their video wearing a fuckinג straw hat with a feather in it.
Tim Dog: גWhat Kool Keith gonna wear? Iגm gonna do that shit in my video. Iגm gonna wear that shit really quick. Whatגs Tim Dog gonna wear?ג

Theres a lot of instances like this that arent really valid - Jeru with 'Come Clean' for instance had already appeared on 'Daily Operation'shadowmaster wrote:

Its hard to pinpoint rappers that debut over an a few tracks on an LP, especially in the case of the Wu. You couldnt really say what Ghost or Rae's 'first' track was.
Its more about that one verse/track that was the first time a rapper had been on wax and made everyone go and make a note to keep an ear out for more

Definitely. It was about another year or so before 'Come Clean' hit though wasnt it? Imagine that shit happening in 2011Thun wrote:Now that you mention it, Jeru on "I'm The Man." He murdered that shit, out of nowhere seemingly.

Yeah it was a long wait. I remember seeing the "Come Clean" video debut on Video Music Box and being shocked that he finally had his own song, and then being further shocked that it was the illest shit out.step one wrote:Definitely. As big a Primo fan as I am, its probably just aswell he's unlikely to make beats like that again. It'd only end up with Nick Javas or Termanology rapping on them. Its slightly easier to bear when they get one of his 'formula' beats.Thun wrote:Yeah it was a long wait. Most that came to my mind have already been mentioned, but I thought of a good more New-Jack-ish one:
Canibus & DMX:
LL Cool J - "4,3,2,1 (Remix)"
That was the first time a lot of us heard Canibus or DMX. They both killed it and both really intrigued me. Too bad neither of them ever fully lived up to their potential. At the time it was like, "Damn! Who are those dudes??". I remember eagerly anticipating DMX's debut LP to drop, only to be incredibly disappointed. Same story with Canibus - he dropped "Second Round K.O." which wasn't bad - he garnered all this buzz about him, then came out with a debut LP that was just weak and unclimactic. "4, 3, 2, 1" was so dope, though....always dug Erick Sermon's beat on that....
speaking of that:
Keith Murray:
Erick Sermon - "Hostile"
Canibus & DMX:
LL Cool J - "4,3,2,1 (Remix)"

Murray on Hostile is a good one.
DMX had been around for a while before he was one that LL track though.
a few more:
Beanie Sigel on 'Adrenaline'
2Pac on 'Same Song' (ok, maybe not an moment but I always liked that verse)
Slick Rick on The Show/La Di Da Di

Kid Hood - though he died something like a week or two later, it's still possibly my favorite debut verse ever.

Does Nick Javas have ANY fans??? I've never in my life heard anyone other than Premo endorse this guy. And I'm from Jersey.step one wrote:As big a Primo fan as I am, its probably just aswell he's unlikely to make beats like that again. It'd only end up with Nick Javas or Termanology rapping on them. True. Obviously wasn't his first verse ever sprayed - but, on a "mass appeal" level, nobody knew who he was until that track. I dig those early joints on Nick Wiz's 'Cellar Sounds', those were cool to hear - I feel like "4,3,2,1" was the vehicle that really introduced him to the world at large, though.step one wrote:DMX had been around for a while before he was one that LL track though.

I think Canibus' debut was on the Lost Boyz posse cut, Beasts From The East, which also features A+ and Redman. Canibus blacks out on this.Joneski wrote:Most that came to my mind have already been mentioned, but I thought of a good more New-Jack-ish one:

I guess I'm just a proto-jansport kind of listener - I dig several Canbius albums and as far as battle raps go, he's pretty ridiculous.Thun wrote:Never understood why people mention the Beasts From The East verse as something noteworthy or special. That's some really stupid, corny, proto-jansport bullshit he spits.
I'll say this: Canibus rips it even more on the A+ track Boyz To Men (also ft. Mr. Cheeks), but A+ gets it for the whole "regenerate limbs like a starfish... swallow my pager to communicate with a dolphin" sequence.

and of course Biggie on Party & Bullshit
None of these are my favorite. I'm just running down other impactful debuts, thinking about it.

Watch Out off Fat Joe's Jealous One's Envy predates Pun's verse on Off the Books by a couple years:

Then there was Firewater in '96 before he worked with Beatnuts the following year.

Yeah. I didnt hear it until a few years after it came out for some reason. Not wack by any means but I cant say I was blown away.Thun wrote:Never understood why people mention the Beasts From The East verse as something noteworthy or special
anyway, just to clarify for people, I'm talking actual debuts here.
Whether or not it was their first 'big track' or the one that got them noticed contradicts the point of the thread - its about the rappers that killed it on their first opportunity.
