I can't think of what debut verse I would say is my favorite but one that definitely stands out to me is Meen Green's on Birds Eye View. The only other time I have ever heard him rap like that is on Combo Burrito with Capital-AK.

This is a good one, I always loved that verse. But I think his record under the name of "keefy keef" predates it. Not that I'm a big fan of that record.

Em had dropped a few things before this though.

Yeah. I didnt hear it until a few years after it came out for some reason. Not wack by any means but I cant say I was blown away.

anyway, just to clarify for people, I'm talking actual debuts here.
Whether or not it was their first 'big track' or the one that got them noticed contradicts the point of the thread - its about the rappers that killed it on their first opportunity.
in that case then my fav has to be AZ on life's a bitch

Word, I can dig that - shit can just get kinda sticky like with Keith Murray for example:

His first official release is some random "Keefy Keef" bullshit 12" from '91 that nobody outside of 100+ people in NY even heard when it dropped and now it is more or less forgotten - therefore, pretty much anyone will tell you that "Hostile" was his debut, though not in the literal sense.

I guess it is rather common for rappers' actual recorded debuts to slip through the cracks or mostly go unnoticed, for whatever reason, maybe due to poor promotion or the shit just not being good, their style not being fully formed yet.

It is interesting to consider the list of those who immediately garnered attention and recognition on their absolute first run out the gate - not to downplay anyone's mic skills, but, it seems like it might partially be a case of just being on the right person's record at the right time with the right record label behind it.

yeah definitely. Nas, Big L & Snoop had Large Pro, Finesse and Dre for their debuts for example. Rakim & Ace had a Marley beat and AZ was the only guest on the best album of the era.

I'm sure I read Capadonna laid his verse for Ice Water before Ice Cream. Either way, I'd say his debut on Cuban Linx was dope, but it set very high expectations which he kind of didn't live up to for whatever reasons. He killed it again on Iron Man, though.

How come everyone says he was doing a bid and that's why he wasn't with the Wu for 36 Chambers, but he's right there in the Protect Ya Neck video?

Again, I'd probably go with AZ as best debut. Started a bidding war and everything.
Kool Keith: I wore a straw hat with a feather to the last Source Awards. When I got to Madison Square Garden everybody was looking at me. When I got back home I seen everybody and their mother in their video wearing a fuckinג€™ straw hat with a feather in it.

Tim Dog: ג€œWhat Kool Keith gonna wear? Iג€™m gonna do that shit in my video. Iג€™m gonna wear that shit really quick. Whatג€™s Tim Dog gonna wear?ג€

Kinda suprised no-one mentioned Rakim but I guess thats more to do with the age group on here. If it wasnt the first Rakim track you heard (mine was 'Paid In Full') its not going to have as much impact. Im guessing when it dropped in 86 people where definitely :ohsh:

I don't really remember if I heard "Eric B Is President" Or "Paid In Full" first, or which one I was able to comprehend first for that matter. I do remember those songs being EVERYWHERE and wanting desperately to be old enough to fully grasp why everyone was going so crazy about them aside from just liking the beats.

My favorite debut verse of an MC on someone else's album b4 they came out officially with their own debut album, I never get tired of hearing the wordplay and aggressive delivery. One of my favorite verses in general too.

Not sure if it's true, but I heard that Bow Wow did the intro to Snoop's G'z & Hustlaz. If that's the case that's probably better than anything he did afterwards. Lil Kim moaning on Ready To Die wasn't bad either

Other than that I'll go with A.Z.

What about Shabazz's appearance on Diary Of A Madman?
