KRS-One's "Hip-Hop vs. Rap" album

Post by claaa7 »

i'm listening to KRS's classic self-titled album from 1995 and just remembered that it was originally going to be called "Hip-Hop vs. Rap" and was even reviewed as such in The Source and other magazines. thx to Press Rewind... blog, here's that review:

Image

the original album featured a few different songs as mentioned in the article. I'm feeling the "What I Know" joint, produced by Diamond D but i'm glad he dropped "Clubs Dem". i uploaded the 4 tracks i got from the original album for those who haven't heard them before. so does anyone know the original tracklist and sequencing for the LP or have some info to why he changed it, etc. also where would you rank "KRS-One" in the Kris discography? personally I think it's in his top 5 all albums considered.

"What I Know"
"Metaphysics" (Interlude)

Favorite album of all time.

Also, I think the song Hip-Hop Vs Rap (which would have been the title track) was supposed to be on the track list too, but I believe got scrapped.

Love the album, definitely his top 5; where do those tracks fit in the original track order? Thanks for uploading these, never heard the interludes

KITFUNK: that sounds reasonable that "Hip-Hop vs. Rap" was intended for this album too.. i always liked that song alot. the booklet for "KRS-One" says that Kenny Parker (who made the mentioned song) worked on the LP but his work didn't make it. other producers mentioned are Pete Rock, DJ S&S, Freddie Foxxx and some others i don't remember.

GRASS: i think that's the version I have on my copy, can you post the other version plz.

One of his last two good albums. I Got Next was the last. Boom Bap was the last classic. RIP KRS-One since I got next. Insight took over where he left off and has carried the torch since. Insight and PUTS are the KRS-One and the Gang Starr of Hip Hop since 1998.

Nope. Been knowing about them since their first releases. I just find the comparisons baffling.

I ripped it off yt @320kbps but I don't know how good the quality was that the yt user ripped it at in the first place. Sounded good to me on youtube though so it should be straight.

Same beat, different, more complete lyrics that make a lot more sense. Yes, it's worth the 30 second DL.

Strange. Stranger still that its never been mentioned before now! Id like to know a backstory on this. You think Jive got nervous and censored it for the US market?

I remember reading that Jive had reservations about "What I Know"'s rhetoric and scrapped it, so yeah it's entirely plausible that they censored "Free Mumia." The US version is awkwardly edited with a few odd pauses, and the most incendiary/defamatory lyrics are missing.

I am pretty sure you can get a CDQ copy of the unedited version of Free Mumia on the Digital CD KRS released a few years ago. I know the unedited version is on a Front Page Entertainment 12" that was released when he was dropping all of those.

^ indeed it is featured on there.. i always wondered why "Free Mumia" was on there (i don't own that album but skipped the track when listening to the download since i already heard it so many times on "KRS-One". now i know why it was included, props... here is the rip of it, sounds much better, although most of the songs on "DIGITAL" kinda sounds like they were ripped from a vinyl.

The actual song, "Hip-Hop vs. Rap" was a B-side to "Sound of Da Police". If anything, it was intended to be on "Return of The Boom Bap". Just sayin, yo.

but "da sound of da poluice" 12" was released after the album it has happened before that the b side of an after album single was included on the next release. i guess the album took longer to make than he had wished and so he scrapped a few older ideas/songs and made KRS One

Does anybody have the unreleased song from Kristyles? I do. Best KRS track made in the last 20 years.

Which unreleased song are you referring to? Please upload/share it. :)

I believe there are actually several unreleased Kristyle tracks that didn't make any of the several versions of that album. I used to have some of them but have yet to track them down in my garage.

KRS released 2 versions of "Kristyles." One was released by Koch Records, but it wasn't put out the way KRS wanted, so he self-released his own version sans artwork.

I have both.
