Glad you like that last one. That picture comes from my phone conversations with Finesse's ex-girlfriend Marquee and her personal photo collection. That was taken on the plane ride to Japan in '95. Here's the non-cropped version:
"I braided everybody's hair while we were away. We got into a debate about men and women, L was just crackin' mad jokes and he got under my skin, got me mad, so I was like, fine, I'm not braidin' your hair. Actually he got one of the other girls to do it for him but it wasn't just L pullin' a Buckwheat, it was because I wouldn't braid his hair for him." ~ Marquee

speaking of tape kingz tapes, it always bummed me out when i would get a 3rd or 4th generation copy wich was just horribly sounding with lots of distortion..does somebody know how to spot a 1st "issue" of lets say the premo crooklyn cut tapes?

Kick in my door? Just wait for that 44 !! Haha, not really, but yep all mine EL. The importance of these tapes still floors me when I listen back to some of them, and of course the iconic artwork is like no other sleeve design.
For me Serch? Tape Kingz tapes are a pain in the ass for a number of reasons, the amount of 2nd/ 3rd gen recordings Ive witnessed over the years is endless, and can be costly. The sound quality on those OGs is [mostly] great, and thats a deal-breaker for me but you are so right, some of them sound like they were recorded in a bin-shed [Originals included].serch4beatz wrote:speaking of tape kingz tapes, it always bummed me out when i would get a 3rd or 4th generation copy wich was just horribly sounding with lots of distortion..does somebody know how to spot a 1st "issue" of lets say the premo crooklyn cut tapes?
I'll be honest, in my opinion, an original Tape Kingz tape is a tape that has the 328 Flatbush Avenue, Brooklyn address actually printed on the body of the cassette AS WELL as having a matching sleeve. I say this as the majority of my collection is BK based, and over the years I've had plenty of duplicate Passe Passe copies, and they suck hairy balls in comparison.
Anything from Passe Passe in France was a duplication, a legit and authorised duplication yes, but a dupe nonetheless. Even though im based in Europe, I wouldnt consider the French copies as originals. Anything from the Undaground Flava guys from Hounslow was also a booty copy [There was also an outfit in Cumbria that did the same through the indy record stores in the 90s].
For me, neither of these are originals, only the tapes with the BK address on the tape, but thats just me. Maybe some of the French tapes were released in Europe that didnt get a US release, I doubt it, but who knows.
There are tapes that were distributed with the OG cover, with the OG address in Brooklyn, but not on the tape, this Primo one is a perfect example, the OG versions of the Crooklyn Cuts tapes are far superior in terms of quality too btw.
http://www.discogs.com/viewimages?release=715575 This is a photocopied sleeve insert with a copy of tape. The cover looks right but it aint [its a copy, cos the tape doesnt match].
What I've never understood is how 2 blokes from Scotland came up with the whole concept, and got em distributed across Europe and the States, go on the Celts !

Yes! No doubt. The artwork was just too dope, and what TK was doing at the time was really something special. Mixtapes wouldn't have become the platform for pre-release hype/exclusive tracks without Tape Kingz.IRISH_CRAIG wrote:Echo Leader wrote:Craig, are those all your tapes? On the real tho, I will be in England at the end of June/early July. Any decent record shops worth checking? Always looking for obscure gangsta rap cassettes.

Echo, theres' plenty of stores in and around London, but trust me, the chances of findin obscure gangsta rap cassettes are looong gone. Good call in ref to the importance, TK tapes set the trend, period.Echo Leader wrote:Yes! No doubt. The artwork was just too dope, and what TK was doing at the time was really something special.
