100 More Great Obscure Tracks?

Post by night_shade »

Has anyone put together a sequel to the "Philaflava's 100 Greatest Obscure Tracks"? It's been 6 years now, I'm curious to see what people would come up with. What do people consider to be underground classics, whether back in the nineties or now in the digital era? For instance, I'm inclined to view Mobb Deep's "The Bridge 94" as a classic even if nobody had really heard it until recently. Here are some tracks I'd put on Vol 2 if we were to make one.

How We Chill - Rhymefest
Aboriginals - The Joint (Or maybe their demo)
Ras Kass - Remain Anonymous (Or Won't Catch Me Running?)
Showbiz and A.G. - Under Pressure
Mobb Deep - The Bridge 94
I.G. Off and Hazardous - This Aint Living (And their demo)
Ak Skills - East Ta West
Mic Geronimo - Hemmin' Heads
The Dereliks - I Am A Record
Royal Flush - Rotten Apple
Mr. Voodoo - Hemlock
M.C.M. - Straight On Up (Or any preferred MCM track)
Mad Skillz - Skillz in 95
Slee'stackz - Ruination
E-Rule - Synopsis
Natural Mystics - How It Go (Remix)
Finsta Bundy - Feel The High
Diamond D - 5 Fingas of Death
Foul Play - Black Cloud
Bee Why - The Boros
Shyheim - Ones 4 Da Money (Was this a popular joint when it came out?)
Company Flow - Juvenile Technique
Non Phixion - No Tomorrow
McGruff - Harlem Kids Get Biz
Group Home - East NY Theory
MC Juice - All That Glitters
Vakill - Check Me Out
Triflicts - Don't Make Me Try
Jemini - Funk Soul Sensation (Remix)
Lord Digga - Watch Ya Back
Mixed Elements - Divine Styles
Percee P - Nowhere Near Simple
Saukrates ft. Marvel - Hate Runs Deep
Sadat X - The Melody
Pete Rock - The Greenbacks
El Da Sensei - Haagen Daz
Triip - Keep it Flowin'
Encore - Defined By the Dollar
World Renown - How Nice I Am
Cenobites - Keep On
Terror Tongue - Lyrical Threat
East Flatbush Project - A Madman's Dream
O.C. - Showtime
Lord Finesse - Down For the Underground

In the spirit of the original list I'm using obscure to mean only relatively unknown. Any of these you think shouldn't be included, or don't qualify as "obscure"?

Good list, really good. The problem when labeling it obscure it that it is so damn subjective.

Most of us are nerds and a lot of what we've heard definitely is a result of the internet era.

For me, some tracks you mentioned wouldn't be obscure, but again that is me. Which is apart of the problem labeling it obscure.

Like Ras Kass' debut 12? Either track is well known because if you know who Ras Kass is, then chances are you know those songs. Most people in the real world have no idea who Ras Kass is.

But you got some great tracks. Maybe we can collectively give this a shot.

EDIT: I'll update a few as they come to mind

Ahmad, Ras Kass & Saafair - Come Widdit (Joe Quixx Remix)
Casual - Later On (Remix)

Yeah, maybe something from the soul on ice demo would be better, or one the Western Hemisfear tracks? I've always really liked Blood is Thicker Than Water, even if it sounds awful. Jack Frost got a vinyl release though, that's an interesting cut.

Some other possibilities:

Chino XL - Lyrical Jesus
Killah Priest (ft Hellrazah) - Mind As A Weapon
Lord Cyrus - Hearts of Diamonds
Onyx - Shout (Buckwild Remix)
Example - Recollect
Masta Ace - Dopes, Pushers, Addicts
Proof - Life
Ghetto Concept - EZ On the Motion
Brainsick Enterprize - On The Vibe
Rascalz - Soul Obligation
Pop Da Brown Hornet - Can You Wu Wu Wu
Shabaam Sahdeeq - Arabian Nights (Maybe the Sinistar Voices Do or Die demo?)
LL Cool J - Candyman
5 Elementz - Rockshows
Phife Dawg - If Men Are Dogs
Charizma and Peanut Butter Wolf - Methods (May not fit here)
Talib Kweli - 2000 Seasons
Concrete Click - Keep It Street
Roc Marciano - The Prophecy
The Dwellas - BQE

So I know that Soundbombing series was pretty popular, so the Shabaam and Talib tracks might not qualify as "obscure". But Arabian Nights is, I think, something special and deserves to be cataloged somewhere. And I'm not really sure how widely known the Canadian stuff is, like Rascalz and Ghetto Concept and what not. How well known was Charizma back in the day? I was four when that album came out, so I really have no idea.

Did you put together the first list by yourself Phila? Maybe people can suggest stuff and you pick what you think fits? Up to you.

No we had a team of people that came up with that. I think we each had 25-30 choices of our own. Why don't we all take a few days to come up with some stuff. We can compile a master list and then narrow it down.

The list`s pretty sweet, but "Hate Runs Deep" is done by Saukrates with an uncredited feature by Marvel, Choclair`s not on this joint...

^yeah i always loved that beat too. Gab Gotcha was i think in the youtube comments saying that Angels was a mis-print and the title is different. I forget what tho.

Would love to see another 100 Obscure list. Be nice to have a couple of non east coast heads put some picks up too, i.e. Jankz and/or dochiphop.

Da Hoodz Uv Mizbhavya - Hear No Evil, Speak No Evil
Bound E! Hunters - Breakitdown
Pudgee - what's the one that goes: "... much respect to my peoples doing crime but never doing time, you never cross the line..."?
Ran Reed – Cops Did The Shooting
Emskee - How I Get Down
... and probably a lot more off the Nick Wiz compilations
Mood - Hustle On The Side
Tragedy Khadafi - Judas Theory
Strickly Roots - Slow Flow
Slade Savage - War Stories
Ruthless Bastards s/t
Pitch Black - A Time To Kill
NON-Equation - Transparent
Diemen X - Ninety Sixness
T-Max - Execution Style
Black Moon - How Many MC's (white label Remix) [producer ever ID'd?]
Creative & Hi-Tech - Continuously
Aiello Wilson - Black Soil
Onyx & Mobb Deep - QB Meets South Suicide
Kess - Against The Law Pt.1
CHAOS - Death Stalks, The Iwakening
Scientifik - Criminal
Mr. Len & The Juggaknots - This Morning
Jeru The Damaja - Me, Not The Paper
Spectrum Live - 50 Grand
Da Minds Of Sol - Blinded by The Light
Rawkotics demo [NY Style]
Mikey D - Killers On Wax
King Sun - Mr. Policeman (demo)
Reks - I Could Have Done More [2000]
Dilated Peoples - Confidence
Mannish - Speaker Time
Rasco - Run The Line /or/ View To A Kill
Ras Kass - Soul On Ice (Diamond D Remix)
Shabazz The Disciple - Crime Saga Remix
Fresno ft. C-Rayz Walz & Immortal Technique - Keepin It Raw [2001]
Mr Mic Rippa - 96 Cream Hunt
Chief Kamachi, Rasheed & Rich Medina - J. Edgar Hoover
DJ Krush ft. CL Smooth - Only The Strong Survive (Remix)

I realize many of my choices are lyrically mediocre but this is my point of view, i won't analyze it now, i'm sure others will bring some balance to this matter. Also, it's up to those living in the US during the timeframe we're interested in to filter out the relatively popular tracks. I wouldn't know.
I'll keep em comin, if i was at home it would be much easier but the 90's were an indie rap paradise so i'm sure we can gather a good amount of worthy joints.
