TROY's Degrees of Seperation Mixtape Challenge

Post by Philaflava »

It's been awhile since we had a successful and fun challenge. I think this one is perfect.

Below is an example and then of course the rules.
1. The Beatnuts - Are You Ready? feat. Grand Puba
2. Grand Puba - I Like It (Buckwild Remix) feat. Sadat X
3. Sadat X - Escape From New York feat. Pete Rock & Deda
4. Pete Rock & CL Smooth - In The Flesh feat. Rob-O & Deda
5. Rob-O - Stay Away feat. De La Soul
6. De La Soul - Sh.Fe.Mc's feat. A Tribe Called Quest
7. A Tribe Called Quest - Show Business feat. Lord Jamar, Sadat X & Diamond D
8. Diamond D - You Cant Front feat. Sadat X & Lord Finesse
9. Lord Finesse - Brainstorm/P.S.K. feat. KRS-ONE & O.C.
10. Dr. Dre - East Coast / West Coast Killas feat. Nas, KRS-ONE, RBX & B-Real
11. Cypress Hill - Throw Your Hands In The Air (Remix) feat. Erick Sermon, Redman & MC Eiht
12. MC Eiht - Nuthin' But The Gangsta feat. Spice 1 & Redman
Every track has to relate.
Every track has to be a collabo.
Every track should be from 1991-1996.
There has to be at least 2 westcoast tracks.
There has to be at least 1 Pete rock produced track
There has to be at least 1 De La Soul feature (could be Dove or Pos alone)
There has to be at least 1 Grand Puba song or feature
You don't have to use a following song by the last guest rapper, it can be any in the song.
12 tracks min. 14 tracks max.

You cannot use more than 1 song by the same artist/group, but they can appear multiple times.

As you see I made sure to start the following song with an artist featured on the previous. It doesn't have to be exact (see track #10) but you'll earn more points for that.

For the points. You will earn points for creativity. You'll earn points for sequencing. Bonus points for tags, covers and ease of zip files. We'll have a poll with all of the approved submissions and then crown the winner.

Deadline for the mix is 10/11 (Friday).

Have noticed that there's been a bit of a change on the board over the last 12 months and it does seem to be alot of people just trying to source ridiculously obscure regional/indie joints more than anything else. I guess all the certified classics and established artists stuff has been done to death.
There definitely isnt as much rare TROY related shit finding its way online as there was 2/3 years ago though and there's a bit of a lack of general debate and discussion, which are 2 things this forum used to thrive on.

Great idea. Don't know if I'll have time to throw something together, but this is awesome.

Could be a few reasons. Naturally, as we get older our interest change. Our responsibility change and our daily lives change in general. This place has done a great job at capturing most of the obscure shit and with our request thread still going, there won't be much more to fulfill unless somebody's hard drive crashed and they need re-ups.
But it also the reason I wanted to do this challenge because all of this we listen to and talk about daily is just recycled shit. This challenge allows us to have a little fun with it so its not some mundane. This forum is what the people make it to be. If they want all vinyl release discussions, so be it.

you gotta actually make a mix not a list. good list tho.

if this is too hard for folks i'll dumb it down to get more than a few heads involved.

Its not that hard. I will say though, its hard for ME because I'm working on one of my own, but I'm making an actual DJ MIX using all vinyl, my two Technics turntables and Rane mixer. Its hard because obviously in a mix you need the songs bpm's to be similar. I almost have my playlist worked out and once that's done then I will record the mix and post it.

You won. You had what it takes and thats why you're a winner in more ways than one. Good mix, like the Southern start too.

that's a bit anticlimatic. thanks for checking it out though. it was pretty hard. i tried it thisand that way and everytime it was done i saw one of the features was missing. had the cutoff been 98 it would've been so much easier because of soul survivor but as it was pretty tough
