Misdemeanor cover is pretty nice, Rock Creek park is good if not great. I'll look to see if any of the Roy Ayers covers do not blow.

Good stuff so far. That Seu Jorge take is a good one, kinda like Gil-Scott.

I forgot about YNQ:

Ha I totally forgot about YNQ. The "Sun Goddess" redux is the best one of the ones you've chosen. Good looks.

I really want to like the Roots ft John Legend "Hard Times" cover because the Roots kill it, but Legend is so .... err .... terrible.

Here's drummer Dennis Chambers killing it on Letterman with a performance of Cissy Strut (sampled by N.W.A., King Tee & others). If your into straight drumming as covers of classic breaks check YouTube for Clyde Stubblefield, Bernard Purdie and others.

A brass Jazz band recently borrowed influence from Pharoahe's Simon Says horn section for a song called Corn On The Cob http://riotjazz.bandcamp.com/track/corn-on-the-cob-2

Thanks but no thanks.

To clarify:

I am looking for modern day (meaning 90s and beyond) covers (or songs that sample so heavily that they practically retain the form and content of the original in the way that a cover would) of songs from the 60s and 70s that are considered classic sample sources for hip-hop.

Thanks to all who have contributed thus far.

Some things I stumbled upon:

Dude even samples the drums.

The faces on their album sleeve are not the band; those are apparently the artists they cover. The band afaik is outta Germany.

You know what a great cover would be if it existed and we could find it? A version of Take Me To The Mardi Gras that has the Paul Simon lyrics over a Bob James-esque instrumental. With a brief scratching in of Peter Piper as icing on the cake. If it doesn't exist someone should do it.

It fits the bill, what they do with it is interesting but I wish the vocalist was better.

Krisch, that cover of the Bobby Caldwell joint is pretty great.

The Eazy E and Dr Dre songs technically fit what I was asking for, but I'm going to keep this to songs that are not credited to people who are primarily rap artists.

I always thought Just Blaze did a good job with the band he got to replay the classic Johnny Pate "Shaft In Africa" break. here he is in a lecture breaking down the process of the replay:

That whole EP is worth checking out. Zo! and Phonte also did something similar with 80's pop classics.

Yeah, I assumed this was not what you're looking but posted it cause it fit the description.

This Funk/Reggae album drops on Tuesday by Tackhead. Nice cover of The Meters' "Just Kissed My Baby", sampled for Pos K's "How The Fuck Would You Know", EPMD and others. Listen to snippets here at Juno: http://bit.ly/1dlODvg

Here's "Walk This Way" by little 6 year old drumming prodigy Avery. He has mostly Rock covers over at his channel.
