Such a great read. The part about DOOM setting up the box next to Subroc's casket at the wake... :ohsh:

We still need a first generation or sealed tape rip. The one DOOM put out isn't remastered and straight from a not so good tape. Compare GUN from the Ruffs and Rares EP with the CD version or the Subroc single. Somebody has them tracks CLEAN equed right. The drums are fucked for example...

I remember reading a rumour that Dante Ross has the masters, but that article says that Doom has them. Weird.

Getting a reissue for RSD

http://www.rappcats.com/kmd-black-bastards/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
IN THE SHOP: KMD – BLACK BASTARDS – BOOK/CD/VINYL

Available Record Store Day Apr 18 at Rappcats Pop-Up Shop, Los Angeles. Address TBA.

MF DOOM’s first group and their controversial sophomore release Black Bastards (Bl_ck B_st_rds) is being reissued by DOOM’s own Metalface Records imprint for Record Store Day 2015 in the format of a children’s pop-up book.

This includes two CDs – the original album and second disc of bonus material – and a 7-inch picture disc of “What A Nigga Know” housed in the back cover featuring the group’s iconic “sambo” mascot. This “board book” package has a sambo pop-up on the last spread.

Have you seen a tracklist for the bonus material? Interested to see what's on it.

The presentation of this reissue is awesome...but I'm beyond bummed out to learn that there's no new material whatsoever. I guess at this point I shouldn't be surprised. Doom has become a master at fetishizing his own music.

Both volumes of this book are a must for any Hip Hop head. Just got the 2nd book and it's just as entertaining as the first. Library essentials.

i feel like the story and circumstances surrounding black bastards has elevated it to a straotosphere within the golden age hip hop community that it doesnt deserve....mr hood is far superior to BB on every level imo

While I agree that Black Bastards has been elevated to the point where it's seen as the better album than Mr. Hood, I vehemently disagree with your assertion that it isn't the better album. I remember when Mr. Hood used to be more widely touted (at least on this board, I think), but Bastards is just a more mature, well-rounded, fully realized album than Hood. The only thing Hood has over it is sound quality ... and one could even argue that the lo-fi nature of BB complements its themes.

Yeah, I prefer Black Bastards too. The fact it was an unearthed gem meant people were gassed about it initially, but it's been widely available now for 15 years or so so I don't think that's really a factor anymore. I like the darker production, and the little sound collages still sound great today, unlike Mr Hood which I find a little irritating.

Still love both albums, mind, so whatevs.

Too bad the Record Store Day reissue won't include the original album cover. That would have been nice:
