LargeUp + Okayplayer present a new mixtape blending hip-hop and reggae classics

Named for a 1971 single by Dave and Ansell Collins that was the first reggae song to top the UK charts— and later sampled by Special Ed for his 1988 classic “I’m the Magnificent”— Double Barrel features hip-hop staples from Nas, Jay-Z, Kanye West, Mos Def and Talib Kweli, BDP, Ghostface, and the Diplomats. Experts in both genres, Corey Chase and DJ Gravy blend these tracks with reggae cuts sampled on those same records, from artists like Super Cat, Max Romeo, John Holt, Super Beagle, Sanchez and Toots and the Maytals.

With endorsements from the likes of King Yellowman, Sister Nancy, Beres Hammond and Junior Reid (each of whom appears on Double Barrel) as well as legendary Jamaican reggae selector Rory StoneLove, one thing is certain: nuhlikkle sound bwoy ting dis!

whatup shadow. Since my last post, I actually did start the recording process. I managed to get the first 25 minutes of the mix recorded, but then life happened. In the time since that post back in 2013, I got engaged, bought a house, renovated the house, and got married. The home renos is what forced me to put the mix project on the backburner, which took over a year (I was doing a lot of it myself......I guess you could say 'remixing' a house was my biggest project so far lol). But now the renos are pretty much completed, and I am aiming to resume recording in the next month or so. I just ordered some more records for this project, so the tracklist keeps on growing. I'm going to Jamaica in December, so I definitely plan to have at least one CD recorded by then.

All those things are far more important, and congratulations.

Think I asked you about it before which might be why you recognise it!

update: just found out that its 'Girls Terminus' by Glamma Kid from the UK. The dancehall version is on youtube but the 12" has 2 mixes so hoping one of them is the Hip Hop mix.

That's funny, because I was googling "Gal Terminus" and nothing was coming up. Guess it had to be the word 'Girls'.
Good that you finally found it. I know alot of those Mafia & Fluxy records had the hip hop remixes on there, so I'm pretty sure that record has the version you're looking for. There's no other remix or acapella that I can see during my search.

whatup fortuna

Yup,

I'm looking for rap artists singing reggae (not ragga) on 70's/80's reggae beats style.
The only examples that I have :

DJ Quik - Tha Bombudd
DJ Quik - Tha Bombudd II
DJ Quik - Me Wanna Rip Your Girl
Spice 1 - Smoke the Like a Blunt
Hi-C - Compton Hoochies

Thought I'd update this thread by adding Vol.1 of the mixtape series (Vol.2 dropping in the next week or so)

In the early 90s, U.S. record labels started signing the bigger dancehall reggae artists to North American deals. In order to appeal to the domestic market, they started commissioning producers to make hip hop remixes of lead singles. Guys like Salaam Remi, Kenny Dope, Bobby Konders, Clark Kent, KRS-One, and Trackmasters were among the beatmakers creating remixes that came to be more popular in America than the LP versions. These producers in turn enlisted guest verses from rappers like Biggie, Method Man, OGC, Q-Tip, Yo-Yo, and the Geto Boys to create popular combinations. Eventually rappers began seeking out guest verses from reggae artists. The reggae-hiphop sub-genre was suddenly created, and began to flourish.

Being a fan of both genres myself, the marriage of reggae over hip hop beats was a match made in heaven. I started collecting every single piece of vinyl I could find with these remixes.
I wanted to put my collection to use, and decided to create a series of mixes containing 90’s reggae artists over 90’s hip hop beats. Everything from popular hits to obscure white label-only remixes. Including my own custom blends of 90’s reggae acapellas over hiphop instrumentals from that time period. What began as a casual one-off “best of” type of mix, evolved into a multi-volume obsession. I even learned to produce my own party breaks just for this project.

I’ve finally finished the first volume, and wanted to share it here first for the Phila/TROY blog fam. BIG shout outs to certain forum members who contributed tracks/acapellas/instrumentals for this project, especially bbatson, step one, dirt dog, and jaz. Nuff respect. Special thanks to Juhmar for the artwork. -DJ Filthy Rich/djfilthyrich@yahoo.com

For those of you who aren't familiar with the 1st volume, I had an idea to create a series of mixes containing 90’s dancehall reggae artists over 90’s hip hop beats. Everything from popular hits to obscure white label-only remixes, including my own custom blends of 90’s reggae acapellas over hiphop instrumentals from that time period. What began as a casual one-off “best of” type mix, evolved into a multi-volume obsession. I even learned to produce my own party breaks just for this project.

The response from Vol. 1 has been great. It's received over 20,000 streams across all platforms and counting (not including downloads), and received blog coverage from the USA to Germany to Japan. Special shout out to DJ Arems, Deejay Theory & Largeup.com for being the first to spotlight it on their weekly feature 'Mixtape Mondays'.
I had some time over the winter break, and finally managed to finish up Vol. 2 of the series. I tried to keep a lot of elements that people liked from part 1, as well as add some new elements to switch it up a bit. The first 40 mins of this mix starts with an uptempo, early 90's boom-bap feel. The next 50 mins segues into mid-tempo, mid-90's vibes.

I've decided to keep the tracklist under wraps for now. Reason being, I always found it more fun to not know what's next. There was a certain thrill when I heard a dope track, but couldn't identify it. In this age of digital playlists where everything is meticulously labeled, I felt I'd try to bring back some of the mystique of the mixTAPE era. Some of my favourite mixtapes that I bought back in the 90's had no tracklist at all...I had to figure it out for myself. I appreciate those tapes that much more because of it.
For those of you who absolutely MUST have a tracklist, I'll eventually type one up and put it out.....but I'll let this mix marinate with you for a bit. A lot of time, effort, and work went into creating this mix, so I hope my experiment works and you find yourself coming back for multiple listens, instead of skimming through it once and forgetting about it forever.
Feel free to contact me with your feedback....I'd love to know what people think, and I'm open to suggestions for the next volume.

I gotta largeup my old friend Masia One for blessin me with the cover art. The old 90's Reggae party poster style fits the vibe of this mix perfectly.
