>Unsigned Hype (The Source) Thread

Post by Eyedea »

hey guys, I was allways wondering if someone would dig in the old source issues up till the end of ninetees, so we could have a complete list of unsigned hype rappers...it would take a while probably, but maybe someone allready has the list...i'm to lazy to use superadvanced searching options in google as it would take to long

so...anyone?

if we could take this a step further and , not only get a list, but upload some of the demo's of said artists, it would be epic. the mid 90's unsigned hype artists were great.
man..all my old source mags are at my moms crib.

Off top of my head: Mobb Deep, Biggie Smalls, Cage (whatever happened to that kid? I remember he had more white boy heat than Em back in the day...), Eminem (or M & M at the time)...

They were all signed. And Cage has released (and is still releasing) a bunch of stuff.

My bad. Gotcha. "unsigned" unsigned hype.

This could be a project for Vincent Lopez and I am guessing Kevin B will be the man on the demo hook ups.

I remember, Fierce and Absent Minded and all of my Source magazines are buried under bits and pieces, I will find them again one day.

There was some Puerto Rican guy from a New York group that was in Unsigned Hype who is now an elected city politician of some kind, I saw the follow up article posted on some blog.

haha...well, now that you're all married and settled, what better time then to track down a bunch of completely obscure demo's from the mid 90's that possibly only matty-c and benzino have.
but seriously, if we could get a decent list of some of those names, i bet kevin beacham might have some of them.

I am an ignoramus when it comes to The Source, but thanks to this video I have deciphered that Legion Of D.U.M.E. fell under this Unsigned Hype category:
<object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/sfLL17VoPVk&co ... ram><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/sfLL17VoPVk&co ... edded&fs=1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object>

DivShare File - 14 Legion Of D_U_M_E_ Freestyle From Stretch & Bobbito
(Sorry, I don't remember who originally upped this, but I'm almost positive it was here and I presume it was Blockhead)

Are you referring to Three Over The Kuku's Nest? They had that single "Lord I Can't Take It No More." Would love to hear the b-side - I believe it's called "Helter Skelter."

Nah he's talking about another crew that had this kid Genesis who was down with Puppets Of Chaos at one point.

I think Blockhead upped something from him in the Stretch & Bobbito goodies thread but I'm not positive.

Here's a track from them, don't know the name. I just called it "Lyrical Professor"

http://www.sendspace.com/file/n4ugle

A few Puppets Of Chaos freestyles from Stretch & Bob, the sound quality on one is pretty low, but they rip the Scenario RMX to shreds.

http://www.sendspace.com/file/lwi8j4

As an aside, I too would love to hear the B-Side of that Kuku's Nest record.

Here's a demo and a couple of freestyles from Funky Jilz (From Da Jungle Nillz) that somebody posted a few years back in the Vinyl Addicts forum, if anybody doesn't have these. He kicked a short verse on Legion Of D.U.M.E.'s "Darc Mind Inc."

Spent a couple hours reading through old Source mags and decided to cut out the Unsigned Hype sections. 35 total so far. Most of them have gained notoriety since.

Has anyone ever seen a 12" of Funky Jillz-Eye Level?, I have only ever heard and seen a radio rip, I wonder if his album will ever see the light of day.

I have seven Source magazines from mid-to-late 93/early 94 that do not contain "Unsigned Hype" sections.

Here are a few others:

Ground Zero (May 1990)
Soul Kings (Summer 1990)
Brothers Of The Same Mind (October 1990)
Top Quality (March/April 1991 Islamic Summit Issue)

This is what they said in the September 1990 issue:
Unfortunately, we didn't get anything good enough to make it into this month's issue...send your very best material today!
They had an entire summer to review demos going into that issue.
