Did a quick search for that comp, nobody seems to be talkin' about it from what I saw. If you wanna scan up that ad next time you up stuff, that'd be cool.
Thanks man - yeah I think it's safe to say the compilation never came out, I couldn't find anything either. I'll scan the ad though - I have about 12 more issues to do over the weekend.

Here's a link to the October 1990 Unsigned Hype:

BTW - The Source never published a November 1990 issue. They skipped from October to December.

And here's Unsigned Hype for February 1995, February 1997, and April 1997:

Ladies and gentleman, Mr. Source Scan himself, Vincent Lopez. Thank you sir, updated.

Do you happen to know when the first Unsigned Hype was for sure? Because it's obviously not in the first two issues from mid-late '88 and there's not much out there online between then and some of the mid '90 issues.

If May ends up being the debut (which it very well could), then we have everything, minus the Soul Kings appearance in the Summer of '90 issue, from inception through the end of '97, which is pretty damn good already if I say so myself.

I'm not sure when Unsigned Hype began. It could have begun with the March 1990 issue (Malcolm X cover) or the November/December 1989 issue (Queen Latifah cover) but I don't have those issues to confirm. We'll have to assume May 1990 was first until we hear otherwise.

That's about what I figured, thanks.

Props to Sureshot La Rock from DWG for the Soul Kings photo, updated. If May '90 was the first one, then we have everything through '97 now.

Updated, thanks again man. We now have over half of '98 done.

Also went through and re-cropped, edited and straightened the majority of them to make them look a little nicer.

Great, thanks Vincent! That knocked off a few that I had lined up to scan.

Here is a link to the scans for a few more scans: https://mega.co.nz/#!G45kHZJQ!Ye_mZ37XM ... Tq9cRpeCow

Included:

Aug-98 – The Columbians
Sep-98 – No Goodus
Nov-98 – Ad for the Unsigned Hype compilation
Dec-99 – Pressure & Araphat
Jan-00 – Joe Summa
April-00 – The Low Lifes
May-00 – Navada
May-01 – Hom
June-01 – Era
October-01 – Tru-Mac
August-03 – I know this is past the cut-off but it’s a pretty good Unsigned Hype retrospective they had for the 15th anniversary of the magazine.

From the Aug 03 retrospective article I was able to fill in a few more gaps in the list (although I don’t have these issues to scan):

July 98 – Little Buddy
March 00 – Sekani
Dec 00 - Shells
Feb 01 - J.U.S. Allah
March 01 – Saigon
Dec 01 - Damani

Just added half a dozen newer ones. Even though it became less breaking artists and more “did you guys hear this?” as it went on, that's just how everything went with the internet and indies growing in popularity as major labels declined. So forget what I said before about there being a cut off. Everyone online wants a complete list, drawing lines is arbitrary and I want to lessen any misinformation out there (plus the more we got on the list, the better it looks). Regardless of what you think of these artists (and some made it in at least a couple Sounds Like the '90s comps), ones after the “deadline” that went on to be (even) bigger names include Immortal Technique in November of 2002, Joell Ortiz in March, Jay Electronica in June and Mecca in November of 2004, Akir and Slykat in February of 2005 (Bishop Lamp was also this year sometime), Ya Boy in September of 2006, Dyme Def in May and Homeboy Sandman in June of 2008 (Streetz-n-Young Deuces was also this year sometime), Dee-1 in August of 2011, Jon Connor in January, Macklemore in February and Tef Poe in August of 2012. Others that are confirmed to have been included but have unconfirmed dates include Action Bronson, Curtains, Flatbush Zombies, Pitbull, and Trinidad James.

Sounds good - I have maybe 10 copies from after the previous 2002 cutoff so I'll scan those soon.

Right on. Everything up through the end of '98 (plus the extras) is up on The T.R.O.Y. Blog now:

http://www.thetroyblog.com/2014/03/31/w ... -of-light/

Hopefully someone else out there has more to add.

Tryin' to figure out when Curtains appeared, that's the only one we have without a date right now. (If you Google Image search, there is a cached thumbnail of the Immortal Technique one and The Source has the transcribed readable text of it. I also found the one with Dee-1 in bad quality that way.)

:icedit: Eight Off / Agallah seems to be all about the T.R.O.Y. Blog article, he's linked it all over his Twitter and Instagram pages.
