Question: What's the origin of the "Outro"?

Reminisce about the golden era of hip-hop.

Question: What's the origin of the "Outro"?

Post by Mr. J Selectah »

Maybe this sounds stupid...but i've always found it curious, the "Outro" thing, in the end of the albuns...i mean, "outro" is a portuguese word, it means "other" in english, but it's universal..either it's japanese or asian, arabic, latin america, and mostly europe of course...most of the times, there's always the word "Outro" in the end of the albuns, no matter the country, it spells like the portuguese word "outro", and i suppose the meaning is universal...sometimes, it's just a conclusion for the album, other times the artist makes "his out" by saying a few words, and other times, it's just some other references or themes, not 100% related with the main concept ideia or message on the album, but something that goes beyond that line of thought...so what's really the origin on the "Outro"? When did this become universal?

If the moderators feel it's right to delete this topic, i'll understand... but i think it's interesting tho...

This is going to blow your fucking mind:

Organized Konfusion's first album has the "intro" at the end.

It didn't blow my fucking mind at all, because sometimes intros are placed in second..and allota songs have intros/interludes before, whatever...plus their name was Organized Konfusion, right? So the contradiction on the intro actually makes sense...but yo, let's not get drastic or get into some predictible type of shit (like the "what the fuck" thing)...just plain and simple curiosity, like so many other unnecessary (perhaps) threads that are usually made...

Thread can still be saved with a list of your favorite intro and/or outros.

Off the top, Diamond D's second album had that ill track for an outro.
Or was it called epilogue, not outro?

Say what...but i don't this thread to be save, it doesn't even feels right to call it a thread, because you know i usually don't do this...and even so, in the end, i told the mods they could delete the bullshit...better yet, on the "intro" i said: maybe this sounds stupid...and on the "outro": If the moderators feel it's right to delete this topic, i'll understand...so who gives a damn about it, it don't mean nothing...
Today i've made that thread "DJ JS-1 VS DJ Unknown & DJ Mekalek", so forget this one...

In this case, CMWs intro for "Music to Driveby" was some serious sinister shit... I always thought that the intro had two pieces of crazy ass music, until I had to replace my tape with a CD and realized that the second piece of music, some jazzy horny shit, was actually part of the first track. Anyways.. doe way to start off a record.

Also, Masta Ace starts his "Sittin on Chrome" with a nice laid back track. I always liked that intro.

But if Kanye was here, he would have interrupted me to say that Baywatch had the best intro ever. Of all time.

Honestly, I think it's a fair question. "Introduction" is a word. "Outroduction" isn't. Likewise, I highly doubt anything ever was, prior to the invention of "rap rekkidz," referred to as an "outro."

When I tried to use "outro" in a 10th grade english class, I was greeted with grim giggles. Since then I've wondered where it came from

Exactly man, the same shit but in a different context...although it's fair enough, i guess...i always found it odd, seeing "outro" written in non-english/american/french (etc, etc) music albuns, when the word is portuguese, so the meaning got universal, but i don't know where, when, why and how...but like i said above, plain and simple curiosity, that's all...plus, i see the philaflava forum hasn't been all that much active lately, so it ain't gonna be for one topic/thread or another, that the shit's gonna make allota difference...

It is possible that it was first coined by The Bonzo Dog Do Dah
Band
as the term is referenced in a song from their 1967 album Gorilla
titled The Intro And the Outro

Exactly. It's an invented word: again, since the "introduction" was shortened as "intro" (in), someone invented the word "outro" for the non-existing word "outroduction" (as in out) instead of epilogue and such. Ever since, the word "outro" has become part of the hip hop jargon, and so it does make sense.

Also, note that Portuguese "outro" and English "outro" are pronounced in different ways.

"...the doo doo eatin, vomit tastin', pee drinkin', jelly donut makin',
hoe slappin', kitty cat lickin', cess pool swimmin', pre marital sex
havin', you know..."

Yes. Can't say I didn't enjoy it and think it was a great intro, as a kid.
I was pretty easily entertained when it came to any jokes about "doo doo".
