The Mack (1973)

Post by K-Funk »

Anyone down for another movie? Just re-saw this a couple of days ago and it's fly, smooth, fresh, ill, phat, dope, etc.

For those who doesn't know what's up with it, see below info:

The Mack is a 1973 blaxploitation film starring Max Julien and Richard Pryor. This movie was produced during the era of such blaxploitation movies as Dolemite, however it is not considered by its makers to be a true blaxploitation picture. It is a social commentary, according to ''Mackin' Ain't Easy'', a documentary about the making of The Mack, which can be found on the DVD edition of the film.
The movie deals with the life of John Mickens (AKA Goldie), a former drug dealer recently released from prison who becomes a big-time pimp. Standing in his way is another pimp named Pretty Tony, two corrupt white cops, a local crime lord, and even his own brother (the black nationalist), who try to force him out of the business. The main character was actually a real life former pimp and the movie contains other former pimps as well.
The movie is set in Oakland, California and was the biggest grossing blaxploitation film of its time. Its soundtrack songs were recorded by Motown artist Willie Hutch. The song "I Choose You" was sampled by UGK in their 2006 song "International Player's Anthem (I Choose You)"ג€”which also featured OutKastג€”and by Jaheim in his song "The Chosen One."
The most famous scene in the movie is the one featuring the "Annual Players Ball". It has become an often-referenced cultural icon. It was the name of Outkast's first single. Also the Player's Ball scene was the theme of Jay-Z's 1997 single Who You Wit and it was parodied most recently by Chappelle's Show, where it became the "Player-Haters' Ball."
Popular urban myth holds that the vernacular term "Mack" is a corruption of the word mackerel, but is used as slang for a pimp due to the mackerel's tendency to guide other fish to their mates. In fact, the word is derived from the French word for pimp.[citation needed]
The film contains the legendary line: "You know the rules of the game, your bitch just chose me. Now we can handle this like you got some class, or we can get into some gangsta shit." The line has been referenced several times in rap music. The Most Know is from a skit off of Snoop Dogg's Doggystyle and even made an appearance on The Boondocks episode The Block Is Hot.

Hope y'all enjoy it and you can check this link right here http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2e7VngeFbhE for a short preview. In my opinion it's a good movie and it haves some great memorable quotes such as "Hey, I don't hafta take this! I'm a rich nigga! I thought you paid these pooh- butts off! You beat walkin' motherfuckers!" (LMAO).

Peace!

P.S.: You can blog it if you want, saw people looking for it!

I have seen it. It's alright. It wasn't as good as I had expected. It had a good cast (Richard Pryor is a pimp in this one). If you like these kinds of movies (blaxploitation) I suggest Superfly...

i'm not sure if pryor is full on pimp here, you never actually see him with any hos, he's goldie's assistant or something like that

the dl link is very cool but i would suggest actually shelling out for the dvd on this one if you like the movie. it's only like 10$ and comes with a really really good 'making of' documentary that highlights a shitloads of details you couldn't possibly know otherwise. apparently the production got caught in a middle of a war between organized crime and the black panthers.

also, keep an eye out a half dozen non-sequiteur vignettes included with no relation to anythign else in the movie, 'jesus in the police station' being the most notable

I just threw the soundtrack up here.^^

To me, this is a classic blaxploitation flick.
Most people would mention this along with Shaft and Superfly.
But there's so many more, most known more for the music from the
soundtracks than for the movie itself.
I got about 10-15 blaxploitation flicks from when they were first issued to
DVD by "Soul Cinema".

I'm no pro at uploading movies, though.
Black Caesar and Coffy are two of my favs from this genre.

The Mack and The Black Godfather are two of my favorites from that era. Has anybody ever seen The Black Enforcers? Rod Perry (The Black Godfather) is in it, it's a decent flick up until some point.
