Mapping Out the Stretch & Bobbito Show (with Tape Rips)

Like I said, if this fails, it could always be unstickied. But if it succeeds, it could be greatness.

I have no idea when the first show was, The Big Sleep informed us that Stretch says November 8th, 1990 was the second show featuring MC Serch and Two Kings in a Cypher.

We might not find a lot of the older shows from 90-93, but let's see what we could do here.

November 8th, 1990 - second show (MC Serch, Two Kings in a Cypher)

This is a placeholder for where I edit it in a timeline later on.

And here is a list of all the exact days that we have gathered so far (though some links may be dead or unavailable completely).

If no guests are listed that either means that there were no guests for the duration of that particular show or that no information was given out and therefore guestsג€™ names will have to be added in later.

Bobbito said that he has a journal of all the dates and guests so that's a possibility with regards to finding out some of the missing days. This is a good start but I know there's more out there, I remember seeing others. Everybody search your RSS feeds, favorite sites, harddrives, shoe boxes, Google, wherever you might find a show.

Here's where I got that information (though it's cited a bunch of places now):

http://konstantkontakt.blogspot.com/200 ... serch.html

I believe that he's saying that Two Kings in a Cipher was the same night as MC Serch but I'm unable to be sure.

And just to clarify for everyone, we are looking for complete rips of full shows (not freestyle compilations or demos this time, that's for another thread).

If we don't have a whole show then partials can and should be used as placeholders until (hopefully) a better version surfaces. Also, if you have two copies, one with sides A and B and one with split tracks, post both if you can because people have different preferences (and sometimes like to collect both).

This thread is meant to focus on what is retroactively known as the Stretch Armstrong & Bobbito (radio) show (which took place from late 1990 to '98) though I'm sure CM Famalam shows and shows with Stretch and / or Bob filling in on Hot 97 would be appreciated as well. Or perhaps that's another thread also.

Nonetheless, the point is Stretch & Bob, '90 through '98, post 'em up (and try to give credit to the blogger, poster, ripper or uploader if you can).

I will try to continually edit in the highest quality and most complete rips so long as people are posting them and / or they are still being found online.
RELM wrote:It would be great if we could get full shows, talking included. Props to Verge & Big Sleep.
Thanks, that is the plan (and the goal).

And thanks to all of those who have, are or are going to provide rips and / or information for us and this thread.

Unless a more complete copy has already been provided, don't worry about the fact that the show recorded isn't the full one (or that the quality isn't great or whatever).

Dates (even general, year estimates / ballparks) are going to be really important for the chronology of this project to truly show through, so even if you have nothing else to help out with, this aspect of the history is essential for what we are trying to do.

Also if you remember someplace online that links to Stretch & Bob shows let us know.

I'm happy to help organize this but that's about all I can actually do (other than search), I definitely can't do this single handedly.

Links will have to be reupped, tracks will have to be I.D.ed, shows will have to be ripped / upped / posted and information will have to be given out.

In the meantime I'll continue to scour the forums (and elsewhere online) for what's already readily available.

depending on how many you end up with, this could be worthy of a seperate blog/website.

this is the only full tape I have ripped, from November 95 with Group Home in the studio.

http://djstepone.blogspot.com/2009/10/s ... -1995.html

I've got another dated Feb 19th 98 with Bobbito & Lord Sear hosting with Copyright/MhZ and Supernatural in the studio.

hoping to get some more this year.

this blog might be worth keeping an eye on . I left a comment mentioning this thread.

http://djstepone.blogspot.com/2010/01/b ... -1998.html

thats the one with Supernatural & Megahertz in the studio.

I also found a tape marked 'Stretch & Bobbito - first Hot 97 show' from 96.

its not the best as its an 'end of side a/start of side b' tape but I'll try and edit it together so its half decent.

I didn't see this one on the list TheBigSleep posted, so here goes,

02.22.96, 70+ minutes long, pretty sure there is a raggedy man freestyle at the start.

Just adding to this magnificent thread, don't think this has been posted in here yet,

Verge wrote:Big Sleep, let me know of any ways I can pitch in here. I hate to put all that work on you.

Also, I wouldn't worry about the Hot 97 ones for now.
I can't really think of anything other than search through your computer and through Google (including Google Reader). And I'm not really doing all that much, it's the uploaders that are puttin' in work and makin' this happen. I'm just the organization man.

You and Ho1o make a nearly unstoppable (and quick) track identification team and that's equally appreciated because I sure as hell wouldn't be able to think up the groups / artists and titles that fast (or at all in a bunch o' cases).

I think people who want to contribute should do what they can to keep adding shows and information (dates, guests and eventually tracklistings) and everybody should just gravitate towards their particular specialties or whatever makes helping out with this project fun for them.

Word, that's what I was thinking, there aren't many Hot 97 shows ripped out there anyway so we can always add those in later.

Thanks for the fourth of July show RELM and for the Raggedy Man show jamo (can someone verify that he is indeed a guest that day or at least tell me to remove his name if he isnג€™t?. I'm too caught up in everything to be downloading all these shows right now. Plus I think I need a whole extra drive for all this shit).

And thanks again jamo for savinג€™ me from further backtracking later on. (I purposely skipped that show when I went through recogthereal because apparently weג€™re starting off with just the official WKCR 89.9 FM Stretch Armstrong & Bobbito shows. Keepin' it simple, to start at least.)

But if people wanna start adding those in the thread too, that'll make those shows easier to compile (in a different list) down the road as well. No CM Famalam shows in here for now though, there's at least a handful of those out there already so that's a whole 'nother separate project for a different time, most likely in a different thread.

Ok, i got some more stretch and bob i have uploaded but it would be good if someone could confirm the dates would be correct from tracks played as i can not remember where i got these 2 files from.

The 1st one KCR S&B 01.13.94 features a freestyle from mr. eon
http://www.multiupload.com/IH6IDV9Q6K

The 2nd one seems to have been edited in parts to maybe cut out some of the chatter and also features stretch playing some old instrumentals and breaks in between the normal hip hop stuff. This one is labelled as KCR S&B 10.14.93 but i'm pretty sure its probably 94.
http://www.multiupload.com/DNLYXSS1QF

Last but not least, Stretch Armstrong and Bobbito-11-11-93 (89.9 FM)-2CD, features Kool Keith, O.C., Large Professor, and Monch in the studio.

Eventually the end goal is to have all the links and / or files of all the shows gathered together in one place with full and verified information, yes.

We still have a long way to go and we are running out of the already posted information and MP3s that have been offered up over the last several years.

I hope that at least a few people step up and continue to offer even more for us all, including people like Stretch & Bob themselves, who are both cool with this(, the idea of having mixtapes and / or radio shows put online or distributed freely) so there's really no reason to hold back from posting 'em if you can.

jamo, maybe this is where one of the shows you grabbed / have is originally from?:

I used the Cool Edit click/pop filter to reduce the static, and normalized to 100%.
I think it sounds a lot better as a result. This isn't a super hi-fi recording,

I don't specifically remember which joint i got off which blog. There's too many to mention, but props should be given where props is due, so props to all those blogs for droppin these gems.

now back to the scheduled broadcasting:

VA-Stretch_Armstrong_&_Bobbito-89.9_WKCR_Show_(06.10.93)

one of my fav's, mad long at about over 3 1/2 hrs total. Here's what stretch wrote regarding this one:
What's sup kiddies? I had to dip out of town again, and the files
that I wanted to post are too big to take with me and even attempt
to post from a hotel room. Served up for your listening pleasure are
parts 1 and 2 of a slamingo KCR episode from June 6th, 1993, a little
more than 14 years ago. By this point in time, Black Moon had already
come out as a new group to take seriously. I regret not having shown
up to the video shoot for "Who Got The Props?", especially since they
bigged up me (and Bob) at the end of the record. That bugged me out,
for real- to hear my name on wax! (You laptop serato youngsters don't
know how easy you have it.) Anyway, it would be cool to go to youtube
on my new iphone and watch "Who Got The Props" with my cameo...but it
just ain't so. So...on this show Black Moon was scheduled to come up,
and they were bringing Smiff-M-Wessun who we hadn't known yet. But they
left an indelible mark on my ears after ripping shit lovely that night.
This had me amped. You'll also enjoy it when I threw on LL Cool J "Back
Seat of My Jeep," probably to annoy Bobbito. There's another live
appearance by a group named N-Tense of which I have no recollection.
On Part 2, you hear a funny musical episode that was recorded in my
bedroom on a hot summer day, featuring muddy, echoed-out vocals by
Reef, Ghetto Communicator, Bonz Malone and Cage. 4, 5, 6 and Justice
League was in effect, and the sound of the bong is real. And so is
the static.

This was early enough in our radio "career" to actually worry about

VA-Stretch_Armstrong_&_Bobbito-89.9_WKCR_Show_(06.06.96_with_guest_Quincy_Jones)

stretch's comments:
My man Diplo just hipped me to a video of Herbie Hancock in the
studio showing Quincy Jones how he uses the Fairlight synthesizer
and other super early sequencers and synths. I immediately went
looking for the KCR show when Quincy was a guest in '96. He came
up with the old homies from the Steve Rifkind Company (Steve,
Jon, Modjoe...) and apparently they had been hitting some clubs,
cause Q was lit, and honestly, seemed to have no clue why he was
at a college radio station at 3 in the a.m. with a rag tag crew
of deliquents. We opened the phone lines, some funny moments
ensued, as did a few that were slightly awkward. But Quincy was
a sport and stuck around for the long haul. I saw him a few weeks
later at Spy Bar, went up to him and shook his hand and reminded
him how we had met, while he looked at me like I was an alien. Enjoy.

stretch's comments:
I'll get the date for this soon, but didn't want to let that
stop me from posting this. It isn't the entire show either...
gotta find that. This is from early 1991; still one of the first
shows. This is the night I met my homie-to-this-day DJ Ekim
from the BX. I was a little wary because I thought, from him
name, that he was a Five Percenter, and would therefore
automatically be hostile to me. It tuns out his name is just
Mike spelled backwards. We hit it off well, and soon after took
a trip to the legendary 1212 Studios in Queens (home of the
late great Paul C, where too many of the best hip-hop records
were recorded and mixed) with his partner Percee-P, where we
started recording a 12" for Big Beat Records. The 12" featured
the Ekim-produced "Now They Wanna See Me" which also had Ekim
putting down some funny ass lines on the m.i. The B-Side saw
an early appearance by Pharoah Monch. Ekim also brought to the
studio fellow BX dude DMX - yes, THAT DMX, who hadn't had record
one out, and had never been on the radio. In his rhyme, he
addresses what he thinks is K-Solo's theft of his "letterman"
style. The mixing levels are bananas here because Bob was very
new to the technical aspects of making a broadcast sound even
half decent, and this was a constant source of irritation for me.
Half the time, I'd get home to listen to a freestyle, and it was
all vocals, mad loud and distorted, with barely a hint of the beat
underneath. On top of that, KCR's signal was very uncompressed and
natural sounding, unlike the commercial stations, and that always
bugged me because the music didn't pop out like it should. Of
course, back in '91, we were still using a mixing board from the
early '70's and sometimes the left or right channel would drop
out, and to fix it, we'd punch the board 'til both sides were up,
and dust would fly out of the fader openings. It was grimy but fun.
As far as the record selection, this segment is pretty big-name:
Brand Nubian, N.W.A., Kane, LL Cool J, EPMD, Kool G Rap...

stretch's comments:
I recommend this post for anyone that is feeling a bit down.
Listen to it, and within 10 mins, you will be laughing, guaranteed.
If you aren't, go see the doctor. I haven't reviewed many shows
in their entirety, but this episode of Krunchtime (what we came
to call the 4-5 a.m. slot, when we were too tired to dj, focus,
or be anything but delirious, and usually opened the phone lines
to anyone) seems to embody the very best of what we could come up
with under the circumstances. Just leading up to this, where this
post begins, you can hear the tail-end of a Red Alert tape from the
80's that I was playing on the air because I was too tired to dj,
plus it just was cool to broadcast a 1980's NYC radio show in the
90's, in NYC. Must have had some people bugging to turn on the radio
and hear a KISS-FM radio ID, ON 89.9. Juicy Fruit gum - the taste
is gonna move you!

Listening to this segment makes me remeember how foul we were
to the listeners, but they liked it. And I'm bugging on how in
sync Sear, Bob and I were. A lot of the things we were doing on
the air sounds planned but none of it was. We were just in the zone.
Enjoy the following: listeners freestyling and getting dissed,
listeners trying to diss but getting slayed, some yo-yo-yo-yo-yo-yo
speed demonstrations, me rapping about snacks, the concentration clappping
song about...snacks ("nuts" ayo!) and teaching someone how to
improve his mother joke delivery. Joisus Bobby!!!

VA-Stretch_Armstrong_&_Bobbito-89.9_WKCR_Show_(late_1990_with_Funkmaster_Flex)
When I got on the radio, I didn't have a funky fresh dj name. I was just Adrian, or Adrian B. Zzzzzzz. Boooring. At the inception of the show, I was hanging out a lot with Claw and the graffiti legend SHARP whom I had met when I was in 6th grade through my older sister. SHARP had been calling me Skinny Bonz (among other more deprecating things). So I rolled with that, especially because SHARP was hip-hop royalty, having been one of the three artists to execute the Wild Style
mural which became instantaneously iconic. Of course, after a few weeks, I realized that "Skinny Bonz" was not the move, especially since I was foolish enough to think that within time, I would develop a more muscular build. My main man Eli, founder of Zoo York, had been calling me Stretch, and in the dj-as-superhero/comic book character tradition, I added the "Armstrong". This particular show, which for some reason does not appear on the radio date log that Bobbito kept, is one of our earliest for sure (late 1990 most likely) because of the name confusion. Through the show, I'm refered to as DJ Adrian, Skinny Bonz and Stretch Armstrong. You'd think we would have worked that out before we got on
the air, but at the time, we didn't believe that many people would be listening so it was not a big deal.

It's funny to hear how inexperienced we were. This is probably the most formal you'll ever hear Bobbito. He reads off the titles and labels of the records, and we even do a give-away of an album- on cassette no less. You'll hear radio drops from Erick Sermon, DMC, the comedian Doug E Doug, Jarobi and Busta as well as the aforementioned SHARP. These drops were all scrapped because they were pre-Stretch, and very early on I realized that without a producer, doing drops was going to be impossible, which worked out because not having them ended up
differentiating what we did from others. We were still emulating radio as we knew it, rather than reinventing what it, which is what happened in time.

Funkmaster Flex, who had been djing on Kiss-FM, was our guest. Hot 97 hadn't gone hip-hop yet, and he was up at the show working his record "Fallen (And I Can' Get Up)" that he had put out with 9MM who had been a part of the Chuck Chillout's Deuces Wild crew. At the time, I wasn't doing much talking on the radio, and to my chagrin, listeners were understandably calling it The Bobbito Show. It was Flex that pulled me aside and told me that as the dj, I gotta talk more, otherwise I won't get credit for all the hard work I put and would be putting into the show. So I started talking (I sound mad awkward here...it's painful to listen to) and soon, I was a big blabbermouth. Yada yada yada.

Shout out to Claw, who was up at this show answering phones; to Flex for the words of wisdom; to Doug E Doug for the comedy; to Curious Jorge who was still a co-host; and to Sheets and Pillows. Some of you know about that.

I'm trying to track down late 1994/early 1995 shows, uncut and un pause edited, particulary-

March 16 1995 - featuring The Roots (rhyming on the Heath Brothers/one love sample record), Smif N Wessun, (and I think Masta Ace Inc- digga, p perry and Masta Ace- were there the same night)

July 20 1995 - featuring Mad Skills, Jay Z & Crooklyn Bandits, DJ Cash Money

and the full show rip of the 1995 night with Jay Z and Big L freestyling on that Milkbone beat

anyone who has good sound quality rips of these or any late 1994/early 1995 shows hit me for trades - djnes3000@yahoo.com. I still have a shit ton of shows I'll be posting in the future. I'm constantly on a quest to get more of these shows. I'm about to get a box from my barber who claims to have a stash.

I say petition to get Stretch back on his blog game, he told me he has over 2,000 rips.

In digging through the files, I did come across around twenty five MF Doom demos which he recorded at my house while resting there for a week or two in the mid to late 90's. Only one of these tracks, "The Elite Scooby Doo Shit" ever saw the light of day, and got a little burn on KCR..
Plus the rip from 94 with Funky Jilz and Mobb Deep is missing 45 minutes of side b. would be appreciated.

Alright, this isn't a show but Bobbito was on Sucio Smashג€™s Squeeze radio show on 89.9 FM a week ago (along with A.G. and DJ Mr. Len of Company Flow). Old School Randy Rand calls in and they talk about how he once stated that there hasn't been a good hip hop record since '91.

But the best part is Bob alludes to an October anniversary show with him and Stretch (and Lord Sear too I think) celebrating the twentieth anniversary of the start of the show (October 1990 to October 2010).

I wanna do whatever I'm able to in order to get at least a portion of this project completed by then. The first step. beyond what we've done so far, was me taking the liberty of registering this blog as I way to further organize our efforts:

I'm not attached to the layout but I'm also not a wizard with that stuff either. If somebody else wants to put a bunch of time and effort into the design that's cool, I'm just using a modification of one of the basic templates to start right now.

Nice work, Big Sleep.

Question - does anybody know what year this JVC Force freestyle session came from?

Thanks - I had this one down as a '91 recording, but I wasn't positive. I'm getting ready to do the 1990 Funky Drummer volumes, so unless someone comes through and says otherwise, I'm gonna save this track for '91.

I'm finishing up a blog post to make more people aware of this right now.
If I forgot to shout anyone out who has helped with this in any way, let me
know. I didn't realize how many heads have really been helping and how
many have their own blogs. I'm including 9 demos in the post. If
I forgot to thank anybody, let me know, it wasn't done purposely.
I'll post a link when it gets published.

I also sent out a message to Stretch and Bobbito earlier on Facebook.
Hopefully they respond.

EDIT: a response-
Stretch Armstrong wrote: I can save you a lot of time. I have most of the dates from 1990 onward.
I asked him if he would be so kind to share that. Hopefully he does.
I also mentioned that we're trying to include the guests and incorporate as
many tape rips as possible.
*gots my fingers crossed yo*

He got at me today, hopefully he comes through with this:
Stretch Armstrong wrote:The list I have has the dates and the artists. It's mostly
accurate with a few omissions. I'll get you the list as well as a PDF of all of the shows I have digitized.
