1998-2002 Indie Era T.R.O.Y. Challenge

Post by Philaflava »

12 track compilation ONLY using 1998-2002 indie hip-hop.

We can add more stipulations but the I.G. kinda of gave me the idea. You have the early Rawkus era and all of the offsprings.

Thoughts?

Lone Catalysts
J-Live
Jigmastas
Co Flow
Mike Zoot
Sir Menelik
Defari
Big Kwam
Skam
Shabaam Shadeeq
Godfather Don
All Natural

The list is endless.

Sounds like a good idea, but why not start with some earlier years? :gyeah:

I'm game though!

We always cover the "Golden Era" but rarely do we focus on just 4 years of the internet-post indie boom. I think we should give it a try this time.

(are we supposed to collab on this or give our own mixes?)

-----------

I would definitely include a joint off one of these two 12s:

Image

Siah & Yeshua - Cure For Stagnation from (Deeper Concentration comp)
Skeme Team (Non-Phixion & Arsonists) - 14 years of rap
Reflection Eternal - 2000 Seasons
Something from A Prince Among Thieves - maybe Steady Slobbin'.
Co Flow & Mike Ladd - Bladerunners
Basement Khemist - Petrified
The Giant - Hidden Crate
Scaramanga - Cash Flow
Typical Cats (Qwaazar) - It won't stop
Scram Jones - Liquid Heat

Honourable mentions:

Lord Sear - Ya Mouth Stink
Ill Bill - Gangsta Rap
J-Zone - something from Music For Tu Madre - maybe Catch 22
Edan - Sing It Shitface
something from LoDeck's Bash It EP - prob Today
something from Vakill - probably Tiz Tha Seizin (vinyl)

I might give a shot with this one. I have a bunch of random shit from this era that I recorded during the time.

Anyone can get down. I really don't want to put many restrictions on this one BUT.

CDQ only (I know this will make it a harder challenge because of vinyl only releases but it kind of adds to the competition.)
14 tracks TOTAL.

No more than 2 tracks by an artist/group. Guest spots do not count.

Indie means independent. I'm not putting coasts restrictions on this. For those who were buying vinyl in the 90's from sites like Sandboxautomatic or HHS will have chock full of tracks to choose from. I don't care if its Mind Space or some SOM.

When I say CDQ I should really say 192 or higher.

I might have a go at this but my indie game is pretty weak for 98-02. I was working in a Virgin Megastore and DJing at Top 40 type clubs and bars so I was knee deep in Neptunes and Swizz Beatz joints

Hopefully I'll discover some things I missed though.

EDIT - just checked my folders and I've got a bit more than I thought. Will try and get a comp together.

Any progress with this?
My selection is almost finished.
Let's rename this thread and make it sticky?

Yeah, I guess whoever wants to participate can start dropping their
compilations in this thread. Assuming the deadline is still Monday March
22, unless Gloss has any changes.

Starts of with a good theme, gets faster and more rugged towards the
middle and cools out more mellow towards the end(pause). Not all east
coast but you could say they all have an east coast vibe with the beats.
Enjoy.

01-Dirty Face Angels - MOElogical (1999)
02-Godfather Don - Live And Let Die (1999)
03-The B.L.U.N.T.E.D Crew - Keep Your Head (1999)

10-Superscientifiku - Taking Of The Days (2002)
11-Anomos & Stealth - Club Crucial (1998)
12-2 Tone Committee - One (2002)

I focused on the production, flow & rhyming on this. You can add that most of the tracks got a thoughtful meaning with maybe a moody? feeling to it. That's what I loved with the late ninties Hip Hop. It was deep!

Dream away..

No, it just means they have to be CD quality, or rips no lower than 192kbps.

Oh, haha. Ah ye, I re-read it & it seems I got it all wrong. However I looked at the quality kbps of all my tracks and it seems ONE of my tracks has 160kbps but the sound on it is top notch.

People can convert it to 192 if it's any problem.
