Here's a press statement from Guru's sister. She tactfully sheds light on some key facts and mentions that the memorial they will do will be "all-inclusive" (ie. DJ Premier welcome).

This is how you write a clean and clear press statement. I think Solar's biggest liability is not that he's shady, but that he is just a moron.

PRESS RELEASE

The Elam family wishes to thank the fans of our son/brother/father uncle/nephew/cousin Keith aka GURU for the outpouring of love, concern and support.

Our hearts are broken by the loss of someone we loved so much. GURU was devoted to his young son, who will most keenly feel his absence.

GURU suffered from multiple myeloma for over a year. Accrued complications from this illness led to respiratory failure and cardiac arrest. As a result, GURU was in a coma from mid February until his death and never regained consciousness. Early on the morning of April 19th, he became hypertensive due to low blood pressure. He again went into cardiac arrest and slipped away from us.

GURU died far too young but he was, and we are, proud of all his many legendary musical contributions.

The family is not aware of any foundations established by GURU. We know and understand that countless fans want to express their condolences and love and, to that end, we are planning a memorial event in the near future that will be all-inclusive. Please look for further details from the family as they become available.

Statik Selektah Shade 45 Tribute to Guru

Post by dirt_dog »

I got this message from a friend who knows Statik Selektah. Looks like I should have posted it a couple hours ago as it's popping up everywhere.

this is the mix i did on my weekly "Showoff Radio" show, live last night on Shade 45 which plays every thursday.

i know alot of DJs have been doing Guru tributes... which is dope, but this is 2 hours of music... from 1988, thru his history including Jazzmattazz Vol 1-3, to the end of the Gangstarr days. I covered what i feel was truly Gurus greatest work.

this includes unreleased music, the b-sides, remixes, etc.

i also had Big Shug, Doo-Wop, Freddie Foxx, Consequence, and Chubby Chub call in and leave some Guru Memories....

he was an icon to me, as well as a friend, and i definitely wouldn't be who i am without the presence of Gangstarr's music in my life growing up.

Shout out to the Gangstarr/Year Round crew for always being real people as well.... through the trials and tribulations.

Rest In Peace G....

attached is a quick cover my man Dj Concept of the Bash Bros designed for me .... heres the link to the 2 hour mix, pls share it, but encourage support of all guru/gangstarr's catalog!!

This is such a nice comp. Some tracks I've heard of, other not so much. It's a refreshing break from the norm. Thanks for putting this together.

Dan taped it and posted in M2C a little while ago, peace to him:

Primo plays classic Gang Starr tracks, talks about Guru (mentions how he was able to visit him in the hospital), doesn't mention Solar by name, but does have other names he refers to him as.

Yep, this comment made more sense when it had it's own thread. It also makes sense that Verge merged all the Guru threads together.

Nice work.

Listening to it right now. Premo startin with Betrayal and cutting up Execution of A Chump "I knew this chump see... he tried to play me
He was my right hand man, but he betrayed me" says it all, he doesn't even have to mention Solar

Not a tribute as it came out 8 years ago, but still a cool mix of Gang Starr tracks.

Last night Premier gave a shout out to Mister Cee's tribute he did earlier in the week. I downloaded it, but haven't had a chance to listen, all I did was fix the tags.

I just finished recording Monie Love's show on SiriusXM. Her show was dedicated to Guru.
She talks about the first time she met him, the last time she saw him, and plays his songs in between stories.
Megamix of Gang Starr at the end of the show.

^^And they have. Didn't Zuzu Bailey say, "Every time a tribute mix is played, a rapper gets his wings"?

Here's a realy REALLY dope interview/talk session with Gang Starr from The World Famous Wake Up Show back in April 2003. Guru & DJ Premier were chillin up in the studio with King Tech and they were talkin about all kinds of shit from over their career... 35 minutes worth!! The talking was during 4 different segments during the show, but I took the talking parts and made it all one very clean mp3. Check it out...
