Ice-T on Arsenio, 1992

Post by Thun »

Height of the "Cop Killer" controversy. Same time as controversies over PE "By The Time I Get To Arizona" and Sista Souljah's beef with Bill Clinton. Aftermath of LA Riots. Crazy times if you remember it.

When's the last time a rapper appeared this composed, articulate, and correct in the face of scrutiny and criticism?

yeah that was on point.

ice and chuck were the 2 best spokesmen for rap back in those days. i remember a few talk shows that one or the other was on defending hiphop and doing it well.

can't think of too many rappers these days that could pull that off

Props for the clips, man. I know this is a while after but SMH at having Luther Campbell be a spokesperson for rap music on that program... Even Schoolly couldn't keep from laughing his ass off when they interviewed him. The thing people still don't understand is that 2 Live Crew were just ONE rap group--they did NOT represent the culture as a whole. Yes they were misogynistic, and no not everyone was or is down with that--it's fucking audio porn. Nothing more, nothing less. Made me laugh though.
Damn, that was really interesting to watch though. I wish Part 4 was available.

Props on Thun's post as well.

Ice-T essentially transcended being a rapper on a couch at that point.
Dope videos all around.

agreed Thun, great post. When was the last time a talk show host got involved like that and really stuck his neck out and got involved in a controversy? What ever happened to the Arsenio Hall show? I'm guessing it's common knowledge but for some reason I don't remember what caused it's demise. It was a very popular show?

'hood legend has it that the show was pulled because he had Farrakhan on as a guest, but in all likelihood the cancellation was due to a confluence of factors, by which I mean ratings.

Dope shit.
"whether its the government, the police, anybody.. if I see somethings wrong I'ma stand up to it..."
Nowadays, that don't happen and it should. Heads got no backbones and/or are just that programmed.
