Best Crooklyn Dodgers joint?

Post by step one »

Masta Ace, Special Ed, Buckshot & ATCQ production

vs

Chubb Rock, OC & Jeru on a Primo beat

Is one better than the other? I cant call it. I feel 'Return...' is up there with Primo's best beats but Ace/Ed/Buck might have the edge on the lyrics.

Im aware of that 9th Wonder version from a few years ago with Memph Bleek, Mos Def & Jean Grae but I think we can all agree its not fucking with these two.

I think that Jeru's verse itself makes the "return" track better

Both are classics though

If someone had've hooked up a 'Crooklyn Dodgers' album back in the day it might've been the best thing ever

As much as I like the Return, I prefer the original.

Return definitely by quite a margin by me. One of my favorite Premier beats and everyone kills it.

both versions are smoking but return edges it because of jerus verse. Its the best verse on both versions.

Jeru was definitely at his peak around that time. Shame he didnt jump on a few more tracks. OC's verse is good aswell and Chubb Rock kinda came back out of nowhere from what I remember.
I heard someone say they shouldve got Biggie on that but I dont think he'd have sounded right alongside the others, and dont think he'd have come with the right lyrical content.

Ace, Buckshot & Special Ed all compliment each other really well - they sound as cohesive as some real groups. The beat is more subtle on their joint though. Primo's is the type of beat where you'd struggle to sound wack over something that good.

First one does a much better job of communicating its theme and evoking Brooklyn.

That said, OC's verse on the return is hugely underrated.

The retur, no doubt, though Q tip production is excellent and the lyrics are legendary, but hey primo made it swing so brooklyn

1st one every time. Just think about how many times the lines have been sampled. Plus that beat is damn near perfect ATCQ.

Too obvious to say apples and oranges? Pt. 2 is more of a posse cut; the emcees go for theirs while keeping the Brooklyn references impressionistic at best, whereas the originalג€™s rhymes are more BK-specific (as per Thun). Each serves their respective film very well. Can neither say which is better nor which I like more. Dope, both.

On second thought, I change my mind. Both songs have impressionistic and factual-literal allusions used to good effect.

I think I prefer the first one because its structure makes the rapping seem more interactive between the vocalists.

Damn, exposed as a lazy-ass again. I was relying on my spotty memory of the two songs. Part 2's more rapid-fire perfs deceived me into remembering that they were more lyrical mission-type verses, and Buckshot's reference to playing hot peas & butter in the og is burned in my brain. Listening to part 2 after the fact I'm amazed how they were able to condense their Brooklynisms so concisely and vividly in one verse each. I still love em both equally tho.

Take all my recollections with a grain of salt from now on.

I would tackle it but I feel like someone who is actually from the east ny-brownsville-bed stuy-flatbush greater area would be able to shed a lot more light. Anybody here fit that description?

It's all good, I made the same mistake but when I relistened my claim fell apart.

My family's from Brownsville, if that helps...

Anyway, both are dope and hard to choose as everyone has already said.

Everyone featured on both songs, kills it. But I prolly listen to the original more.
