KRS-One's "Maximum Strength '99" (c7 revisit downl

Post by claaa7 »

"Maximum Strength" was an album supposed to be released by Jive in 1999 to fullfill KRS-One's contractual obligations with the label. Only one single was released from the album, "5 Boroughs" with the B-side "Temple Tactics" and even ad's for the LP appeared in magazines like The Source. Kris also did several interviews about the album which he stated was completed but ultimately it ended up being shelved. Jive instead released the Greatest Hits compilation "A Retrospective", sporting the same cover that was seen in the "Maximum Strength" promo ads.

The album was finally supposed to be released independently in 2008 and was promoted with a new cover and the original tracklists; but once it came time for release in late '08 we got something completely different; 12 newly recorded songs. Several songs on the '99 album has surfaced on the net while some appeared on "The Sneak Attack" and "D.I.G.I.T.A.L.".

This lost album became somewhat of an obsession for me for a long period of time and eventually I managed to get my hands on ten of the songs from that tracklist and as the original album had 15 songs I added 5 additional tracks that was recorded around the same era and most likely was recorded for the album (for example the song "Aquarius" is produced by Showbiz and he was one of the producers on the LP according to interviews with Kris), but might have been scrapped before a tracklist was finalized.

This is a must download for any KRS-One fan, as I really took my time to find as much info as possible in form of Kris interviews, extensive search of his discography from that period and then worked extremely hard on the sequencinging to really make it sound like an actual album rather than a compilation. To me this was a worthy follow-up to "I Got Next" and a better album than "The Sneak Attack". Judge for yourself..

You assume Aquarius is produced by Showbiz cause Kris shouts him out at end, right?

On the 12", production is credited to KRS-One:

^ oh ok, thx haven't noticed that - might very well be correct, Kris is a very underrated producer for sure. especially his work on "KRS-One"... that 12" specifically says that "Aquarius" and "Let It Flow" was supposed to be on the album (that 12" came out way before 'Sneak Attack).

bignormy: from the tracklist that was put out before they changed it in 2008, nine of the songs have leaked from what i know. i was fucking mad that they came out promoting the release of the original 1999 album which i would have gladly supported it, but then he dropped a totally different LP. and 30 minutes at that. i have that original "Ghetto Lifestyles" radio rip too if you want it but the quality is extremely horrible, i could never have included it on here - it would destroy any enjoyment of that track + the one i used from "Sneek Attack" is exactly the same song just that it cuts off at 2 minutes right before Tragedy orgiinally spat his verse. I can't remember from where but i know it was a verse he used before or after.

1. 5 Boroughs (feat. Vigilante, Buckshot, Keith Murray, Camג€™ron, Bounty Killer, Killah Priest, Prodigy, Redman & Rev Run)
2. Making Moves [*]
3. Boogie Down (Rock On)
4. Better Run (Clap 'Em) (feat. Wyclef Jean)
5. Here We Go (My Crew Is With Me) [*]
6. Satisfaction
7. Protect Yourself (Ghetto Lifestyle) (feat. Tragedy Khadafi)
8. Good Life [*]
9. Yea Yea Yeah (feat. The Outsidaz)
10. Ova Here [*]
11. Iג€™ll Be There (Made For This) [*]
12. Let It Flow, Do What You Know
13. Hit You With Another One [*]
14. Temple Tactics
15. Purified (Acapella)

What a difference a switch of forums can make, I like the replies I see here betta. There are some knowledgeable heads on Wu Corp but alot of times I look at other people's replies and don't know whether I'm taking part in a Hip Hop forum or a special ed high school class.. Wu Tang Foreva lol!

Nice KRS compilation, it good for me because unfortunately I lost track of KRS One's work around the period of Maximum Strength. There were a couple albums he put out around that time that I didn't like.

Yeah we're probably cross pollinating a bit here, I'm fairly sure I have the same rip you have, I think I got it from wu-corp; I haven't checked your comp but some of them might be my vinyl rips from the thread here.

I've seen people claim they had promos of the '99 version, "and threw it away" but i presume they're lying or thinking of sneak attack or some other '00s release.

I suspect that leaked tracklist isn't the same as the original, as I tought aquarius was the real lead single - I wonder if they dropped stuff that appeared on d.i.g.i.t.a.l. There are some other songs that I always hoped or presumed were intended for it, including 'knowledge reigns supreme.'

I wonder if ova here is the same as the nelly diss (or the version of it without nelly references?)

A dirty version of 5 boroughs never came out did it?

lol i know exactly what you mean brandon, there's alot of focus on weird shit besides the music over there haha. this definitely seems to be a good place for serious hip-hop discussion which is great to see.

yeah i pretty much love everything KRS dropped between "Criminal Minded" to "I Got Next" but after that i feel that he's done alot of half assed albums. i gotta say that imo he has came back alot stronger the last couple of years with albums like "Survival Skills", "Meta Historical" and "Hip Hop Lives". i think since he's been in the game for so long he need some kind of outside stimuli to really bring it, like working with a super dope producer for the entire project or doing a joint project with another MC (like Buckshot).

the album with Showbiz was really dissapointing to me tho. how did y'all feel about that one?

You can hear Keith Murray's uncut verse if you watch the movie 'The Corruptor,' it's blasting in its entirety out of one of the antagonist's cars at one point.

I actually did a write up on the "5 Boroughs" video a few months bakc for HHLO - http://hhlo.net/2011/02/hhlo-video-rewi ... -boroughs/

Oh, and fantastic work on the 'Maximum Strength' assemblage.

^Good shit on the write up.
Never paid attention to 5 Boroughs cause I thought the beat was generic. Watching the video now, heh. That Vigilante dude sounds like DMX on xanax. Kinda nice though. Hilarious if that's really a fake Keith Murray, especially at 1:52 where he makes that goofy face-

I like this track a lot better than i used to now.

Good work on this comp, downloading now.

Word. That was a dope and funny write-up. A lil correction tho:
The dancehall artist on there is NOT Bounty Killer. He looks nothing like Bounty Killer and even though he's biting Bounty's style he's not even close. Actually I'm pretty sure he is "Vigilante" as he drops the name at the end of his verse.

So the question is then: who is the dude who kinda of ripped it after KRS? Like Keith, they actually don't really let you see his face either. Maybe that dude was a stand-in too, but he basically gets no credit on the 12".

Like you mentioned, lots of weird quirks and mysteries to this video. But kinda cool nonetheless.

Props to claaa7 for the post. KRS had a few years in there where several albums were all confusing with multiple versions etc. (Maximum Strength, Profit vs. Prophets, Kristyle, etc.). I know there's several goodies that fell through the cracks. Looking forward to seeing more of them.

peace to everyone contributing to this thread!

that was an interesting write-up on the video, i was checking the video for the first time in a very long time while scrolling down every once in a while to read what u had to say about each part. the song is banging too.. i wonder what the truly last great posse cut was. haven't heard one in a long time that's for sure.

also thx for posting the 'Max Strength' ad from Keith Murray's album, i guess they used a picture from the same photo shoot but its definitely not the same.

you're right Strategy, there's been alot of that with some "recent" KRS albums. it was suprising tho cuz "Kristyles" was easily the best album he had done in a long time and that was the one he didn't want to be associated with lol. it was fucked up the label scrapped the Jam Master Jay song tho and one of the best songs which i think was called "True Story".

Yeah. I've actually seen 3 different versions of (The) Kristyle(s). Glad to hear you thought "True Story" was dope... believe it or not, my man and I produced that and 2 others tracks which were left off the released versions. I gotta dig out my copies to share with yall.

But this thread would not be proper if it did not reference the illest KRS rarity thread ever, right here: http://www.philaflava.com/forum/viewtop ... rs&start=0. :phila: Props to Roy Johnson, whereever he is.

that's damn ill to hear, "True Story" was perfect for Kris imo, he ripped it. i'm gonna check through the thread you posted.. what was on the 3rd copy of Kristyles btw?

i figured the ragga guy on "5 Boroughs" was Mad Lion since he often did hooks and ad-libs for KRS back then, but i don't really know what he looks like and haven't listened to him outside of his apperances with him.

no problem, it's impossible to listen to for enjoyment but it works for hearing what verse Tragedy spat on this.

Back in 2008 when Roy made "krs-one - non-album tracks 1986-1997" thread I was putting together a compilation of KRS works that includes non album tracks from 1998 to 2008. The compilation is incomplete (missing some tracks I couldn't find back in '08 and also the quality of some tracks is not the best), but if peeps here are interested I can upload it (it's 137 tracks total).

Wow. HUGE props for that post. I imagine that there's more obscurities that can be added? I know I have at least 3, just gotta dig em up.

thanks bluedrifting!!

I'm curious about the 3rd version of kristyles too, I have the other 2; it's simple to think of the distributed version as "kristyles" and the self-released krs approved version as "the kristyle"

as for prophets vs profits, there's version called prophets vs profits I got from hiphopsite or sandbox or wherever, then "the mixtape" came out later; but I've seen a real cover for "prophets vs profits" that wasn't on either of these, is there a 3rd version?

One question I've always had - on some versions of the "gunplay" 12" there's a b side called "the real diss." I checked a clip on some record store site and it was just a version over the real hip hop is over here (i.e. the nelly diss.) Is that correct?

The best thing that surfaced in the other thread: that semi-freestyle that was pretty much the same as "only one" that was listed on ohhla.com.

When I get a chance I'll try to see if I have anything that slipped between the cracks between the two also.

What are a few things that have been out there?

I had a really bad quality version of a song that went "I'm from the bronx, baby..."

I think there was a south bronx 2000, not sure if it was differant than south bronx 2002.

I think on temple of hip hop's myspace there were some different versions of songs from adventures in emceeing that I missed.

i think you are thinking about "Go South Bronx" which was basically a live track they just hooked up when Kris was visiting Future Flavaz. the first beat is produced by Pete Rock and the second i can't remember, but don't think it wsa Marley.

i got a few Kris tracks that wasn't on this that i could upload. like 1997s "Digital" with Goldie, that's one of my favorites and really show how incredible an MC kris is. Goldie a drum n bass artist and KRS is rhyming over real dark, fast D&B with no probem.

thx again
