Onyx Vs. Mobb Deep
Went back to 'All We Got Iz Us' the other day and thought about how musically these two groups are far away from each other.
Question is which one do you think is better?
Mobb Deep had the beats, Havoc was fuckin' them boards up back in the 90's.
Onyx had the rhyming down though, well mostly Sticky and Fredro.

It's Mobb Deep for me, no real competition as far as albums go, but to be fair to Onyx, their impact and influence on the sound of Hip Hop at the time was similar to Mobb Deep's. Look at the slew of imitators that suddenly popped up right after Bacdafucup and The Infamous... dropped. One overlooked Onyx track is 'Overshine' which showed that they didn't need to grunt & growl all of the time to be effective.

Prodigy was a better emcee than any of Onyx.chiefbombpro wrote: Onyx had the rhyming down though, well mostly Sticky and Fredro.
I'm probably a biger Onyx fan than most (or at least, hold their first album in much higher regard than many), but even I'd side with Mobb Deep, if for their second and third albums alone.

i can't even comprehend how anyone would vote for Onyx. they had their moment but don't come close to Mobb Deep in any aspect. Prodigy was way ahead as a lyricist and i wouldnt even put Havoc behind them either. actually i think Havoc is pretty underrated because Prodigiy outshined him so hard.
Mobb Deep made tiemeless music. onyx as i said in Gloss's outdated songs thread are very much confined to their limited timeframe. to a degree im a fan of the aesthetics they represented so i can enjoy an Onyx track from time to time but more often i prefer not to get shouted at

I'm saying though, had Onyx stayed on track and had another album like their second one. This topic wouldn't be so one sided.
Take each groups debut albums though. Both released in '93. I think Bacdafucup is better than Juvenile Hell.

Prodigy a better Mc than all Onyx members? That's far from being reasonable. When i hear "Purse snatchaz", that does it for me. How can you even compare the rhyming styles of Prodigy to Sticky Fingaz? Who cares about almost everybody sampling P's verses for more than a decade?...that's not even an argument. Both groups had left their own trademark, street credibility, plus production would be equally solid.

Onyx was soo gritty imo, up there with MOP as one of the hardest groups ever. Mobb Deep was the laid back street shit you never hear Prodigy or Havoc screaming or anything but Onyx was always get hyped to fuck some niggaz up shit. I love both of these groups.
The Infamous
Hell on Earth
Infamy
vs
BacDaFucUp
All We Got Iz Us
Shut Em Down
The Infamous vs BacDaFuckUp
Hell on Earth = All We Got Iz Us
Murda Muzik vs Shut Em Down
But if we take all the verses from any of the members...Prodigy wins it hands down.
Yo, the heavy metal king hold big shit, with spare clips
You seein clips when the mac spit your top got split
Layin dead with open eyes close his eyelids
Turn off his lights switch to darkness, cause deep in the abyss
Is street life, blood on my kicks, shit on my knife
Youse the wild child, kid cold turnin men into mice
I was born to take power leave my mark on this planet
The Phantom of Crime Rap, niggas is left stranded
Shut down your operation, closed for business
Leave a foul taste in your mouth, like Guinness
POW niggas is found MIA
We move like the special forces, green beret
Heavily around my throat, I don't play
Shit brand new, back in eighty-nine, the same way
The God P walk with a limp see, but simply
To simplify shit, no man can go against me
Test me you must be bent G, don't tempt me
I had this full clip for so long, it needs to empty
The reason why it full for so long, cause I don't waste shit
You properly hit, blood in your mouth, so you could taste it
Quiet as kept, I lay back and watch the world spin
I hear thugs, claimin that they gonna rob the Mobb
When they see us, I tell you what black, here's the issue
It's a package deal, you rob me, you take this message
Along with that, I ain't your average cat
Fuck rap, I'm tryin to make CREAM and that's that
Whatever it takes however it gots to go down
Four mikes on stage a motherfuckin four pound
Speakers leakin out sound and niggas leakin on the ground
I could truely care less the God will get his
Regardless blow for blow let's find out who wear hardest
This rap artist used to be a stickup artist
Sometimes I test myself see if I still got it
A live nigga stay on point never diss
Regard shit or forget the essence, from which I emerged
P is sick, so save that bullshit for the burbs
Live up to my word, if I got beef, niggas comin in herds

Agreed. I've gotta go with Mobb when I look at their longevity and growth as a group, it seems they've held it together better over time more than Onyx has.Life Visualiza wrote: But if we take all the verses from any of the members...Prodigy wins it hands down.

I think the Onyx members are better than Mobb Deep NOW because Mobb Deep seems burnt out like fuck. Prodigy got a weak ass flow nowadays.
One thing I loved about Onyx is the energy they brought to the tracks. A better comparison wouldda been MOP vs Onyx. Mobb Deep was instrumental in changing the whole NY sound so any head would choose them over Onyx.

take each one's best 10 verses and put them against each other.
or another game take the ten best Mobb Deep songs and putthem against the 10 best Onyx tracks.
this whole thing shouldnt even be a discussion. it feels absurd
Yes that would be the obvious dead on battle, maybe we'll do that soon.Versive wrote:You got a point though. If you're going to look at Onyx vs. another 90s NY rap group, M.O.P. is the obvious comparison.Bigg Boss Luciano wrote:M.O.P.... oh wait...
I pick Mobb in this.
To me or you, yes this is true. But they not only still listen to Onyx in europe and other places, but also the influence Onyx had on other emcees at that time is a partial cause for the recent years' resurgence of the random rap record craze. Just about every random record that has a growling emcee can be credited to Onyx by influence.Huldrich Bullsh!t wrote:onyx as i said in Gloss's outdated songs thread are very much confined to their limited timeframe.
Anyways, I'm not a fan of teh growling emcees at all but i did love Onyx back in the day and still love joints like Purse snatchers Part 2:

Voted Mobb but i don't think it's the most outlandish concept for a thread like some people are acting.

onyx had influence i wont doubt that but when did they debut? in 93 afaik or had they a single earlier? there are random rap joints from earlier aren't there. those were kind of like Run DMC rappers on faster beats.Verge wrote:Yes that would be the obvious dead on battle, maybe we'll do that soon.Versive wrote:You got a point though. Onyx got some joints but as i said take your favorite 10 tracks of each group and put them against each other. it will be hard to argue in favor of Onyx imo.
