Monsta Island Czars Appreciation Thread

Post by Echo Leader »

Been listening to MIC a lot lately. Their first album, 2003's Escape to Monsta Island!, is super dope, as are X-Ray(King Caesar)'s two Monsta Mix compilations.

Monsta Mixes, Volume 2

I really dig this group (their 2003-2007ish incarnation anyway, before the departure of DOOM/Ghidra, MF Grimm, Rodan, Megalon et al). Some folks have made Wu-Tang comparisons in the past and I can't say that's too off base; the sheer size of the collective makes it easy for listeners to bridge the gap between MIC & the Wu, and the Monsta Island MCs are each purveyors of their own styles, from Kong & Megalon's rapid-fire flow to the slower, more deliberate rhymes kicked by Spiega & Kevrock (Darcmind). Still others opine that X-Ray's brooding, atmostpheric production and sheer prolificity brings to mind RZA's '93-'97 period, when he was lacing full albums for almost all the Clansmen. It definitely lends a consistent feel and sound to the Monsta Island discography.

Let's turn this thread into a flood and up any/all Monsta Island-related albums we can think of (the Gigan EP would be a great place to start)...

Can't seem to find a working link right now but I'll get on that when I'm at the crib. I remember seeing a used copy of this ages ago in a local record store for what must have been mere shillings and am now kicking myself as it is impossible to find this cd for under a bill. Not sure why this got yanked from shelves but I'm pretty sure it went out of print very shortly after it dropped.

Anyway, dope record. Super-dense lyrics and wordplay. If you like that Megalon album, then this joint is for you. The production, handled by both X-Ray and Ravage the MeccaGodzilla, is low-key and threatening, dark as hell. Good winter album. Listening to this feels like sitting in a dirty beige Lexus coupe on a one-way street in a snowstorm, getting lifted and drinking Colt. Do yourself a favor and check this out.

:icedit: Here's the Rodan link: Rodan - Theophany: The Book of Elevations

King Geedorah - Take Me To Your Leader

Other than Escape from Monsta Island!, Take Me to Your Leader is probably the Monsta Island Czars project that folks are most familiar with, and for good reason. It's billed as a DOOM album, and dropped at the height of his first serious surge in underground popularity (after Operation Doomsday! but before the Danger Doom project). The period when DOOM was still establishing himself as an underground/critical darling, but before he'd caught on as THE rapper that college kids took bong rips too. But I digress.

13 tracks. Classic DOOM production. A little lighter on the Sade and Jody Wately samples and heavier on obscure jazz and afrosoul breaks, combined with the ever-present cartoon and Japanese kaiju movie samples. If Theophany: Book of Elevations is a winter-time car album, then Take Me to Your Leader is a very mellow, cool-out Sunday ride. Kicking it with your kinfolk, cracking bottles of the XX and passing a bliz around while discussing the merits of Cheng Siu-Keung's dope-ass cinematography in "Breaking News"-type-a shit. Take Me to Your Leader is very obviously Geedorah's album, but it's more of a production showcase than anything else as he only raps on 5 out of the 13 tracks. Lyrically it's more of a "DOOM & friends" affair, and MIC reps heavy all over this record. Scienz of Life even come through to kick verses, and the Kurious track alone is worth the price of admission. Classic. Every single track is dope. Highly recommended shit.

Don't have it? Fix that shit dummy!

Yup. X-Ray, the dude who put together the Monsta Mixes and does the bulk of MIC's production also does production for Darcmind. KevRoc (the rapper in Darcmind) isn't affiliated outside of the X-Ray connection, as far as I know.

Yeah, KevRoc(Darcmind) and X Ray have been down together doing music since the early 90's, afaik. This re-release(plus extras) of a stupid rare record is them:

LEGION OF D.U.M.E

I believe X Ray has a lot of 90's production work besides this.

Guess I'm lucky to have a physical of that Rodan huh? Didn't realize it was so rare, copped when it dropped.

I didn't have those X-Ray mixes Echo, thanks for those. I've got some stuff to contribute that I'll post up later.

I don't have that Kong EP, but I do have his full length Shackles Off. I'll post that up soon. Here's a LP by Megalon and Raylong that serves as the successor to "A Penny For Your Thoughts". Not as good as "A Penny For Your Thoughts", but still quality. Art of Flowing and Back To NY are illllll.

The production's a little hit or miss on this '08 Kong LP and I don't rate Kong as high as most, but there's plenty of dope songs, especially those featuring Spiega. Weasal is a DOOM diss. Broken Safety, War, and Red Tears are my cuts.

Kamackeris is another under appreciated Czar. He went by Kwite Def when this album was released in '08. Featuring wall to wall production from X-Ray, "Artz And Craftz" is a slept on gem. While Kamackeris isn't a top notch MC, I've always liked his voice and the sound quality is surprisingly good on this release.

WATT?? That's a personal classic to me, I remember when they ran the video on video music box. Always loved this joint and it's aged very well, imo, especially the beat.

Thanks for this thread Echo. I don't know if it's just me but the link to the Monsta Mixes 2 just takes me to my own mediafire files. My computer been acting up a lot lately though so the link may really be fine.

I think it was Gigan who was my favorite of them for awhile. Would love to hear that EP.

| X | higher institution of learning and Junclassics rhymes got | X |
| X | rougher, realer, and political. Jun has rocked the stage of B.B. | X |
| X | Kings, ran through Club Cheetah, chewed up the China Club, and | X |
| X | jammed at Joes Pub in the Village, to name a few places. His | X |
| X | stage show explodes with unbridled energy. "The crowd does what | X |
| X | the emcee does. So if you just standing there how can you expect | X |
| X | your audience to move? You gotta lead em. And never be afraid. | X |
| X | Theyre only people!" Nearly two years ago, Junclassic took up | X |
| X | production as the result of bad politics with a few past | X |
| X | collaborators. He insists on making instrumentals without the | X |
| X | crutch of samples by utilizing a keyboard. "The dudes people | X |
| X | sample aint sample nobody! Im trying to get to their level. Plus, | X |
| X | I love the challenge of coming up with something innovative and | X |
| X | original. That has always been my driving force with the rhymes, | X |
| X | so why not keep it going with the beats?" Continuing to challenge | X |
| X | himself is Juns passion, now all he needs is the ear of the | X |
| X | people. | X |
| X | | X |

great thread Echo Leader, thanks. i've been meaning to check out the M.I.C. album for years as i'm a pretty big DOOM and MF Grimm fan plus i liked all the guest features on such on DOOM releases. will definitely give this a listen and get back...

X-Ray seems to be a very underrated producer btw, where he's at these days?

Hmm. I had the same thing happen...anywho, I added a new link. Should work fine now.

I found some sort of EP over the weekend...it doesn't seem to be the Gigan EP listed on Discogs, which has 6 tracks (including the songs and "Krazy World" and "Queens Day"):

I'm not sure if this is one of the handmade CD-R EPs that X-Ray was selling at shows years back (eg Kong's "Gorilla Warfare," Rodan's "Flight Lessons," etc) or something else entirely. At any rate, it's dope.

Gigan - In Serch Of

This short album/EP follows in the same vein as the Megalon & Rodan albums...intelligent thug shit, with most of the heavy, cinematic production handled by X-Ray. Cerebral crack rap if you will. Gigan doesn't rap as fast as some of his Monsta Island compatriots, but he certainly holds his own and I have no complaints about any of this. All 7 songs are dope. "Don't Want No Beef" and "Outta Jail" are particularly fuego.

Here are the two "missing" songs that Discogs lists as part of the Gigan EP ("Krazy World" was included on the King Geedorah album):

Here's the cover art and tracklisting for Rodan's "Flight Lessons" EP that J.Preme posted:

Image
1. Haruwn The Conqueror
2. Flight Lessons
3. Human Race
4. No Snakes Pt. 2
5. One Week
6. Aphelion (Outro)
Another short EP in the vein of the Gigan joint. 6 tracks, with a handful exclusive to this disc and the rest appearing on Theophany: The Book of Elevations. If you peeped Theophany then you know what to expect.

Darc Mind - Bipolar

Darc Mind album that X-Ray pressed up and sold hand-to-hand and through his website around the same time Anticon released Symptomatic of a Greater Ill. Not sure if this is (was) older material, newer, or a mix of both but it bangs. This joint is just as good, if not better than Symptomatic. Some of the hardest beats X-Ray has ever produced, it's like a Vincent Price movie mixed with RZA circa 1995. KevRock holds it down on the lyrical tip as well, dude has one of the deepest (:pause:) voices I've heard in rap and quite frankly sounds like he could swallow (:pause:) the sun. Very dense and stream-of-consciousness flow, and a pretty strong departure from the usual MIC subject matter. Check this out.

EDIT: oh nice, i was looking for that a while ago. word.

 works fine now, thanks for everything.

So i figured the least i could do was take whats been posted and put together an unofficial Gigan EP for the hell of it. I took the og Live Wirez from one of the Monsta Mixes, Queens Day from youtube, Crazy World from Take Me To Your Leader(i guess it's the same song even though one spells with a "K" and the other with a "C"), and labeled and tagged all the files together with da visualz yo.

Still trying to find that Kong Gorilla Warfare EP, no luck...a handful of the tracks have been uploaded on YouTube by folks that claim to have the EP, and like the Gigan/Rodan/Megalon EPs there is fair amount of material that was previously released. I've been able to track down 7 of the 9 tracks on YT, the only 2 missing are "Do or Die" and "Use Me."

Here's the cover, tracklisting, and the 7 tracks I could find...any way we can track down those last two tracks??

2. Do Or Die
3. Broken Nose Flow
4. Black Widow
5. Gorilla Warfare (featuring Megalon
6. Use Me
7. Die (Remix) (featuring Egyptian Queen, King Ceasar, Loch Ness, Megalon & Spiega)
8. Cross My Heart (featuring Spiega)
9. I
