Tracks tweaked for the better

Post by Boothe »

Thought about this topic when a couple of songs came up on the ipod.

I'm not necessarily talking about remixes (you can include those too, I suppose) but tracks where minor additions (or subtractions) made them more enjoyable for you.

The Pharcyde - Passing Me By

Imani's re-recorded verse, the censored edit on Tre's verse, and the addition of the Whodini sample in the hook (Fatlip's idea, according to LA Jay), makes this version better than the one that was included on the first pressing of the album.

Nice & Smooth - Funky For You

Always preferred the single/video version of this track. It's a little less...busy.

De La Soul - Ring Ring Ring (Ha Ha Hey)

On the other end of the spectrum...I absolutely can not listen to the album version of De La's Ring Ring Ring. It sounds so dry without the vocal sample from The Whatnauts. I was really irritated when I first played it back in '91. Then they released that sax version...ugh...

Just off the top, two cuts by CMW each received one additional tweak for their remixes which made all the difference:

Growin Up in the Hood- The live piano noodlings spread throughout the tune blues-ed it up considerably

Compton's Lynchin' merely layered a Meters hook on top of Superman Lover, and it sounds so naked w/o it

There's so many tho...

Nice choices guys, I especially agree on the Compton's Lynchin because I always liked the radio edit remix more than the album version and De La's Ring Ring song would be nothin without that classic Whatnauts sample.

My first thought was the unreleased piano version of Inspectah Deck's Let Me At Em.

The adlibs, re-recorded vocals and chorus for the single version of Get Funky by The Beatnuts adds a nice touch compared to the album version. The single version feels more energetic compared to the album version which is a bit more mellow.

The single version of Kool G Rap & Polo's Bad To The Bone has slight changes to the beat which gives the song a bit more energy compared to the album version in my opinion.

and the video versions of We In There by BDP and Just To Get A Rep by Gangstarr have slight changes and re-recording that I've always liked.

What about this one?

<object width="420" height="315"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/bI-eMXfA1rM?ve ... ram><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/bI-eMXfA1rM?ve ... n_US&rel=0" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" width="420" height="315" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true"></embed></object>

The new version rides, but I have a fondness for the cold album version.

OT to what was asked but I think the original version of Mobb Deep's Quiet Storm is a lot better than the released version. Havoc's added chorus is very generic and the original sounded better with no hook or chorus.
Kool Keith: I wore a straw hat with a feather to the last Source Awards. When I got to Madison Square Garden everybody was looking at me. When I got back home I seen everybody and their mother in their video wearing a fuckinג€™ straw hat with a feather in it.

Tim Dog: ג€œWhat Kool Keith gonna wear? Iג€™m gonna do that shit in my video. Iג€™m gonna wear that shit really quick. Whatג€™s Tim Dog gonna wear?ג€

^Yeah sometimes a hook is ruinously bad, like WTF did you do to a perfect song??? No disrespect to Ron Isley but his riffing overstates it

I think Xzibit's flow on the clean version of "Paparazzi" is much better.

I like the hooks on the clean versions of "Can I Get A...," "Country Grammar" and UGK's "Bad as Hell" better.

Really agree on Let Me At Em, Pharcyde, and Ring Ring.

Nothing to add off the top of the dome except being pissed off when i got the Gangstarr Step In The Arena cassette and Just To Get A Rep didn't have the final verse which really summed the song up, imo.

Slick Rick - Children's Story: The video version("Knock Em Out The Box" mix) includes vocal samples & scratches throughout. At the end, Rob Base's It Takes Two is mixed in.

Lords Of The Underground - Chief Rocka: The video/single version contains several vocal tweaks. The most obvious change is that the hook now has the added chorus of "boom shakalaka yo there goes the". The verses also contain some tweaks.

Mr Funky's re-recorded verse has several changes. DoItAll add the line "slam the child on the hard concrete". Instead of Marley Marl saying "now that didn't make no sense" and Funky replying "come on who cares". Marley just says "Hey yo man stop right there. You messed up. Run it back K". Funky cleans up his line from "But they don't understand. I'm the motherfucking man" to "I'm the Mr Funky man".

DoItAll changes a line in his verse from "smoke weed in a leaf" to "hitting gangsters like Apache with the funk from beneath".

Good ones.

I like the album version of Chief Rocka better.
