The Legion

I know we have the "limited vinyl/re-issue" whatever thread, but I know a lot of people on this site either don't buy vinyl anymore or just pretty much ignore that thread for any reasons they may have.

So, since Ill Adrenaline has recently dropped 2 Legion songs from 1995, I figured lets get some appreciation shit up in here. Also, allegedly those 2 unreleased 1995 joints are part of a 1995 unreleased EP that will drop by end of year.

I like Rest in Peace a lot, you prompted me to putr it on. Who was the first to use that sample?
Kool Keith: I wore a straw hat with a feather to the last Source Awards. When I got to Madison Square Garden everybody was looking at me. When I got back home I seen everybody and their mother in their video wearing a fuckinג€™ straw hat with a feather in it.

Tim Dog: ג€œWhat Kool Keith gonna wear? Iג€™m gonna do that shit in my video. Iג€™m gonna wear that shit really quick. Whatג€™s Tim Dog gonna wear?ג€

Pretty sure Cormega used it later on, not sure if anyone used it before this though.

unless I'm mixing it up with Mega's Fallen Soldiers? But i'm pretty sure it was a QB emcee used sample.

OK, so it was The Legion who used it first, then. I knew about the Mobb track and The Legion one, just wondered if it had been used before. OT but is Back at You the same sample cut up? Another Mobb Deep track (was that an Alchemist beat?).
Kool Keith: I wore a straw hat with a feather to the last Source Awards. When I got to Madison Square Garden everybody was looking at me. When I got back home I seen everybody and their mother in their video wearing a fuckinג€™ straw hat with a feather in it.

then they followed that up with banger Legion Groove, by these first 2 singles and the Black Sheep connect I really thought they were gonna go further then they did.

nice Roy Ayers sample cut that was later used notably by OneBeLo but, imo, I like the Absent Minded demo song(aleph posted, i can't find it) that used it better:
<object width="420" height="315"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/CZFsn_CF8rY?ve ... ram><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/CZFsn_CF8rY?version=3&hl=en_US" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" width="420" height="315" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true"></embed></object>

I'm gonna put that other one on youtube since i can't find it there, then I'll edit in this post.

nah, Shadowmaster, but they do sound similar. Back At You I'm pretty certain was from a Isaac HAyes soundtrack cut. Probably Shaft.

Another banger off The Legion LP:

thanks to Thun for really pointing this overlooked album cut to me.

The weird part is that "Drugs" (Lil' Kim), sampled from the same song, credited Sylvester as being the sampled artist. Chances are he banked a few royalty checks from a song he had nothing to do with lol.

Hah. Maybe it was a mix up like you said or maybe he actually wrote which i don't hink so or maybe there' also a tiny different sample in there that is from a Sylvester song but i doubt that too. Thanks for putting me up on that beat, I never listened to much Lil Kim besides the beat for Queen Bitch.
But i think it's the Isaac Hayes version that Mobb used:

The Legion was such a dope crew and i was super hyped when i saw this and heard the "Straight Flow" joint. i've listened to their "Krill" album a lot, not a perfect album or a masterpiece but it's definitely a banger with jams like "Who's It On" (man i was so hyped when i found out that Show & A interlude was an actual song LOL), "Jingle Jangle", "Rest in Peace", "Zootie Bang", "New Niggas", etc.

due to my really weak economy, i rarely get the chance to pick up these exclusive vinyl releases though although i of course must feed my habit by buying a few records every month. i will probably pick up that EP by the end of the year, that's news to me. thanks Verge

It blows my mind how many people don't buy vinyl anymore. IT'S VERY SAD!!

Verge, so there's supposed to be an EP released later this year, huh? That's good news.

Word up. I first heard "Jingle Jangle" on the Wake Up Show and also bugged out. I turned 19 in '93 though. haha

Well I'm tempted to agree, but I'm not sure I can blame people for not buying outdated music on an outdated form of media...I mean this is stuff the guys either listened to two decades ago or stuff that came out before a kid was born and has to make an investment in the whole sonic culture to enjoy it as it was enjoyed then or just utilize the technology of his/her generation and listen to the mp3s for free...can't get too mad at 'em.

SUCH A COLOSSAL SAMPLE. I remember first hearing the Roy Ayers song and not yet having heard or remembering that part sampled.. that sample came on....hooooooooooo-weeeeeey
Knew it had to have been sampled, we knew there was no way anyone who heard this record, being it was Roy Ayers a popular sample source, could have not heard and felt that sample. Truly a sample that blew my mind when i first heard it.
It makes ya wanna say fuck it and do the beat again anyways just to do it and hear that sample more, lol.

Word, yeah i think you posted it as a throwback demo battle style thread, i think. With a dope Big Al track or something like that. Matter fact that track may be one people have been trying to id for months now, not sure though.
