New TROY Challenge: Who's down for it?

Post by Architek »

It's been a whole year already since the last TROY challenge for a themed compilation, one of my favorite parts of this forum. How about gettin down to business once again? Quite a few new active members emerged during this time period who probably have some creative ideas to throw on the table.

Diggy64 was kind enough to remind us of this challenge series' history:
11. Instrumental Challenge
10. 6 Degrees of Death Row Challenge
9. Posse Cuts Challenge
8. 1995 Challenge
7. 1998-2002 Indie Era Challenge
6. Sample Sources Challenge
5. Best Album Cuts Challenge (pre-1997)
4. 1994 Challenge
3. New Jeruz Challenge
2. The 6 Degrees of Bad Boy Challenge
1. Challenge #1 (1990-1995)
I 've been thinking about it and these are some new themes that crossed my mind:

- Remixes
- Sounds Like The 90's (post-'99 based on a 90's feeling)
- Limited run
- Promo only
- Smooth / laid back (beatwise)
- Strictly instrumental hip-hop (no vocal versions ever existed)
- Foreign stuff (for those of us who believe in flow-over-content it's sometimes extra liberating to escape from the meaning of words, to face the syllables as another part of the music)

So, who's down for it? Any other, maybe more complicated, ideas for a new themed compilation? Looking forward to your responses.

- Strictly instrumental hip-hop (no vocal versions ever existed)

That would be incredible if we got a decent number of entries.

I'm down for whatever. Instrumentals would be cool...smooth/laid-back is what gets my vote. I know there are quite a few heads who have DEEP collections of obscure g-funk shit.

Word is bond Verge! i remember last time, grrrr

That would be cool but, are there plenty of them out there? We need enough material to guarantee variety among entries. Maybe i'm wrong though, this isn't exactly my field of interest.

As a matter of fact, i think a Sounds Like The 90's challenge would give a nice boost to the blog. What a better comeback for the series? I vote for Remixes though.
It's Strictly Instrus so far.

Mods, we need a well-respected individual to make some final decisions about the rules, deadlines etc. Please take care of things when it's time to do so. Thank you.

Yeah, I was half-joking. I've been buying up anything I can find pre-1985 lately, but late '80s/'90s is definitely more popular by and large. There is definitely plenty of good early '80s shit out there; it's just a different kind of listen altogether. Songs are much longer, flows are more basic, beats are less sample-based, more disco-like, etc. Plenty of great storytellers and funky instrumentals though.

Jaz wrote:I'm in too...how about a compilation where you have to have a family relation (Mother, Father, Uncle, Aunty, Brother, Sister, Nephew, Niece etc) in the next track and it doesn't have to be strictly Hip Hop?

ie Eazy-E and then Charles Wright & The Watts 103rd St Rhythm Band?

nah i don't think so because imo the only goal that serves a challenge like this is extreme nerdism, not any musical. i dont know for sure but i doubt there are enough interesting family relations out there

and as far as i know Charles Wright being Eazy E's father or uncle is a false rumor. have never seen a legit source of this claim

Why the laughing? Charles Wright has denied any relation to Eazy-E.

I'm completely down for it as long as it's somewhere around my comfort zone. That family lines idea Jaz said would be a unique and interesting challenge however i would not even attempt at it.
