East Coast With West Coast Flavors

I have a feeling there might be a thread like this somewhere, but I'm looking for East Coast songs or albums with an obvious West Coast influence. I'm excluding Southern G-funk type stuff here. Here's what comes to mind for me.

Sittin' On Chrome is an obvious choice.

Riders of the Storm has heavy West Coast vibes.

Probably my favorite Shyheim joint, and it has some serious West Coast sounds.

Now that I think about it there's a West Coast element to a lot of The Lost Generation.

I'm not really crazy about this song or album, but definitely WC:

always thought some tracks from it was written sounded a little west coast influenced. if i ruled the world and street dreams in the polished production both were west coast influenced im pretty sure.

actually this was one of the first songs i thought about funny you put another one of this album in there

of course this

WC used the same sample for west up and it has that G-funk feeling although this verison has more eastcoast drums

hard to pick one track off the album because most was produced by Sir Jinx and it sounds similar to Cubes stuff but i think this one because its slower has more of a west coast vibe

and of course this from the rappers to g raps performance

somewhere between jiggy and westcoast. i generally feel a lot of jiggy stuff under puffy was derived from g-funk. i think there are tracks from pieces of a man that also have a certain westcoast vibe.

Jamal is a good call. Since Strictly BusinessErick Sermon has been using a lot of samples from groups usually associated with West Coast/G-Funk sound

it has the boom bap but i don't know the laid backness reminds me more of some LA shit. similar to some Boogiemonsters stuff

Excellent selections.

Da Youngsta's definitely have some West Coast flavors, though I've never really noticed it before. Lost Boyz too.

Someone here uploaded this mix of Main One's Learn 2 Be A Man 4 Self recently, highly G-funk'd.

Great thread!

Dana Dane's Rollin' Wit Dana Dane (1995) was mostly produced by the West Coast legend (and my favorite producer :gyeah: ) DJ Battlecat... he also produced Blak Czer's Tales From Da Blak Side (1994)... btw, Blak Czer is from Pittsburgh, PA (some ppl consider Pittsburgh to be midwest, tho, but idk).

A couple of other East coast albums with the West Coast/g-funk flava:

B.A.S.K.O. - Mirror (1996) (Rochester, NY)
Wreckx-N-Effect - Raps New Generation (1996) (Harlem, NYC)
The Almighty RSO - Doomsday Forever RSO (1996) (Boston, MA)
Rob Base & DJ E-Z Rock - Break Of Dawn (1994) (Harlem, NYC)
Questionmark Asylum - The Album (1995) (Washington, D.C.)
Naughty By Nature - Poverty's Paradise (1995) (East Orange, NJ)
LL Cool J - 14 Shots To The Dome (1993) (Queens, NYC)
Krucked M-Age - Definitely Krucked (1995) (Jersey City, NJ)
Ill Al Skratch - Creep Wit' Me (1994) (Brooklyn, NYC)
Ill Al Skratch - Keep It Movin' (1997) (Brooklyn, NYC)
Champ MC - Ghetto Flava (1994) (Bronx, NYC)
Evil Minds - The Garden Of Evil (1999)

also:

maybe this one?:

believe it or not but these cats are from New Jersey:

another Jersey cat (seems like a lot of NJ rappers in the 90's were on that WC tip):

Damn Luciano, your hip hop knowledge is VAST. Haven't heard several of those albums but Ill Al Skratch is definitely a good call.

That Jersey stuff is funky! Reminded of this Miilkbone cut.

This beat always sounded pretty WC to me, probably the Rappin'-4-Tay sample.

Haha, thanx... I love findin' those rare 90's gems.

Irv Gotti made these G-Funk inspired beats early in his career:

Was listening to Slaughtahouse recently and I remembered how Ace parodied the hardcore trend of MCs during the early 90's in the first half of the song with the same name. The accents, trademark hand-clap snare and Roger Troutman Funk sampling is all there.

I also like Erick Sermon's "The Ill Shit" feat. Kam and Ice Cube as a East Coast with West Coast flavor cut. A lot of his production felt West Coast Funk influenced during the early 90's to me.

Another one from The Funk Lord Erick Sermon, Stay Real remix has the trademark snare/clap and Ohio Players Funky Worm synth for an East Coast beat with West Coast G-Funk influence.

Good selections, hadn't heard that gravediggaz remix.

Hadn't heard that Erick Sermon joint. He really seems to dig that fuzzy WC bass.
