Modern Covers of Classic Sample Sources, R&B/Soul, Jazz, etc.

Post by Thun »

This might be a long shot, but since so many modern R&B/soul artists are connected to producers who are in tune with hip-hop's musical lineage, this has to have happened more than once. If we can get ten excellent examples together we can probably put together a dope compilations "Sounds Like the 70s" or such.

Let's try to keep this to real attempts to cover, interpolate, or recreate, not simply songs that feature a prominent sample.

To start: Erykah Badu's take on Sylvia Striplin's "Can't Turn Me Away" is perfectly done and references both the original and "Get Money."

Masters At Work's take on Bob James's Nautilus is super dope.

The Rebirth's cover of The Mighty Ryeders "Evil Vibrations" referencing both the original and "Rollerskating Jam Called Saturdays."

I really like what K-Def has been doing in recent years by interpolating famous samples, each of his latest releases with ReDef have at least one cool remake. Check out One Man Band above which starts with his remake of an Axelrod tune that's been flipped on multiple Hip Hop classics.

I love this sort of shit but I'm not really that well informed on it at all.
If anyone fancies zipping up a folder of joints and posting it that'd be very much appreciated.

I'm digging J-Dilla and Dwele's version of "Think Twice" more than Badu's, primarily because Dilla chose to recreate the most famous aspect of the song and Badu's version sets it aside.

cosign on that one man band. i haven't heard anyone talk about this album at all. it's got a few instrumental versions of hip hop tracks like a k-def instru version of return of the crooklyn dodgers. very cool album to just drive around to or put on the background and do some sunday cleaning at your crib.

I always liked this replay of Nautilus by Nicolay of Foreign Exchange. Like Just Rhymin Wit Biz, I'm waiting for the day when nearly every bar of the Bob James original song is sampled by Hip Hop.

James Brown - Funky Drummer replay by D' Angelo, ?uestlove and Christian McBride www.funkit.virose.net/?p=1804

On the "How It Got Over" album by The Roots, ?uestlove did a good job in recreating a number of classic drum breaks such as "When The Levee Breaks" by Led Zeppelin.

That outkast version of "favorite things" is horrific. Kill it with fire.

Not really feeling the Nicolay "Nautilus" redux. It's cool, I just like what Masters of Work did a lot better.

D'Angelo/QuestLove "Funky Drummer" is great, exactly the kind of thing I'm looking for. K-Def's Axelrod flip is stellar.

What else ya'll got?

re: Re-Bop ... is that the same basic idea behind all of those "digging through blue note" compilations too? hip hop producers with access to the masters remixing songs?

It isn't EXACTLY what I'm looking for, but if any of those came out and good and fit the criteria here of being a sample staple, let me know.

Yep!

Also, don't just limit to meat and potatoes breaks! If any modern R&B female vocalists have recreated shit by say Patrice Rushen or The Emotions or Minnie Riperton, post it.

So far this is my fave Breakestra joint for this purpose:

And El Michels Affair "Walk On By" wins for me:

Is the Axelrod joint available as an isolated mp3?

I was about to hit you up on the batphone for this comp. Any good leads on some artwork? Or any suggestions for tracks?

the first thing that came to mind you already got - the Isaac Hayes covers ep

let me try to think of more. its a little tricky because covers of old soul/funk tracks not that uncommon, but a lot of them are random songs that got sampled maybe once. paradoxically, its harder to think of covers for songs that got sampled a million times over
