Public Enemy It Takes A Nation& Black Planet deluxe editions

Post by mudfoot »

Has anyone heard these deluxe editions that came out recently? I wonder how's the sound quality & if they've been remastered? Why did they include FIGHT THE POWER as a bonus track on IT TAKES A NATION if it's already on FEAR OF A BLACK PLANET??? It's cool that they included all of the B-sides, instrumentals, & remixes from the singles. Too bad there are no demos or unreleased tracks.

I've heard them both. I don't really have a good ear, so I can't tell if they've been remastered or if they just increased the volume.

"Fight The Power" is a bonus on Nation because it's the the "soundtrack version" which has a different intro, is about 38 seconds longer and is quite a bit louder.

Just like all the other reissues this year, it's nice to have all those b-sides and remixes in one place and in cd quality, but nothing really new or exciting.

Clearly, I can't read. It's a bonus track on BOTH of them. And that is stupid.

It's also uncensored, as the album version isn't.

They're definitely not the same as the original albums in terms of sound quality.

Here's an image that compares a track from each from the OG and new versions: -

To me, both of them haven't been well remastered. "It Takes a Nation" is considerably louder than the OG version, while "Black Planet" is a touch louder, but both of them have been over-compressed and then limited.

Here's the soundtrack version of "Fight The Power" from both albums: -

You can see that the waveform has been squared off on both, but the version on "It Takes a Nation" is just louder. I dunno why they put the same track on both.

They don't sound terrible or anything, but unless you want the extra tracks then I wouldn't bother with them personally - and I say that as someone that bought both. Both seem to have been initially mastered with loudness in mind rather than sound quality, but then the tracks on "Black Planet" have been reduced in volume for some reason.

My guess is that you and several other posters on this board have more knowledge of mastering than whoever put this together. It's not like they called up the Shocklee bros. for this. Somebody at Def Jam realized they had these in the back catalog and decided to re-release them.

Haha, true. They would have been better off just leaving the albums as they are and putting the extra tracks on a second disc to be honest.

This FEAR OF A BLACK PLANET promo vinyl includes an exclusive track called RADIO BEAT. Does anyone have this in their vinyl collection? Is RADIO BEAT any good?
