The "this sounds like..." thread

Post by night_shade »

There may be another thread like this somewhere but I haven't come across it. The idea is someone posts a song or two with a sound they like, then someone else posts a song with a similar sound along with another song they want matched. Pretty simple, should be a good way to discover new music.

To start off:

or

Anything that sounds like either of these two, plus something else. Let's get her going.

cant think of anything off the top but like that Meen Green track. Never heard it before and it seems like a reasonably cheap pick up on Discogs

Post me some Hip Hop with smooth jazz fusion sample loops and neck-snapping drums in the vein of Undastand by Heltah Skeltah and We Got It Hemmed by Cella Dwellas. In the 90's those weren't too hard to find.

if somebody can find a track that is similar to this one, I will be forever indebted to you:

extra points if it's a chicago artist operating in that same era

Interesting that you have mentioned The Nonce - World Ultimate. An underrated LP. But they are from LA, not the midwest. I haven't checked out Homeliss Derelix (I've heard of it though). Thanks!

^Yeah it's too bad Ruberoom only really has that one track with that sound, I dig it.

Was going through Homeliss Derelix tracks earlier and I came across this one.

Very dope. Anything else like this?

ps night shade that dereliks track is nice i not heard that before, thru this shity fone speaker the sample souns similae to the 2nd speak ya clout beat ..sort of..

aha, I'm just reading this now and I totally agree with you. I downloaded and listened to the entire album last night, and while it's pretty ill, none of the other songs sound anything like body snatchas.

after a first listen, i'd probably call these dudes chicago's answer to wu-tang.

I really can't think of much to compare to death be the penalty, but this comes to mind:

that nine track is dope nightshade not ever checked the album , thanks man. definetly has some dramatic orchestral elements goin on in there, totally the kind of thing man nice one

i actualy meant crime saga, death be the penalty the sequal but yeah hhaha i guess u knew that, when u pulled that nine track

heres that ill kdef beat, similar dramatic vibe..

strictly beat wise im lookin for a bunch of stuff like this, i dont care who the emcee is or even if its pure instro

i know theres wayy more dramatic beats out there i probably have a few on the shelves jus cant think of em..

oh wait, i guess u could include

goin back to the derelix track, is that unreleased? crazy if so.. its dope as fck.. actualy u know im probably wrong but it sounds like they used a heavily filtered sample from the intro to pete jolly's "leaves" track...

the bassline kinda sounds like it, maybe.. then they threw over some creepy sounds like that crowd applause and stuff sounds mad abstract.. but digressin here haha sorry .. fuckin this thread up here.. proceed as before..

Does anyone know how to hide youtube videos, so that they don't take up so much space?

Thanks mud. Blend, just saw the second half of your post, you're looking for something a little different than most the stuff I posted. Always loved the 5 Fingas of Death beat. Pharoahe Monch's Simon Says seems like a good example of the kind of hyped orchestral beat you're after.

Night Shade that Melancholy Radio V.1 was dope as hell, is there a V.2 in the works? You also had another thread called something along the lines of "tracks that don't sound like anything else". Any chance you'll be throwing together a comp of those? Always digging the cuts you throw up on here brother. Many thanks and keep it coming.
