last classic hip-hop album?

Post by Philaflava »

Curious to see what some of you put. We discuss classics on episode 22 with Dart Adams for those interested in the discussion. The music itself is pretty fresh if I do say. I personally don't see how there is anything that is considered an instant classic these days. Shit takes time. Standards are different these days too but that's not to say there aren't great albums or some that become classic overtime.

On episode 22 we’re joined by hip-hop historian, journalist and Boston native Dart Adams, as we discuss, dissect and disagree what makes a classic hip-hop album. Are there modern day classics? Are the standards different these days? Speaking of classics, we got a few from Redman, Main Source, K-Solo, Big Daddy Kane, Outkast, Rakim, EPMD, Brand Nubian, Double XX Posse, Da Youngsta’s, Smif-N-Wessun, Big L, Ill Al Skratch, plus some new music from both Planet Asia and Evidence.

The first one that comes to mind for me is GKMC. I'm not even a Kendrick stan either....I didn't care much for TPAB, and I liked Damn but it's not worthy of being discussed as a classic IMO (even if enough time had passed). But GKMC goes down as a classic for me.

Sidenote: Ayo Gloss....we still good for the TROY Blog post?

Nice episode! I like the smooth set and summer vibe toward the end showcasing artists who made songs about female encounters. That's a style that needs to come back, I feel many artists on the underground are too serious today to do that sound.

I remember saying Industry Shakedown by Bumpy Knuckles is a classic a few years back here on the forum. I think that's some great rebel-spirited beat-you-down Hip Hop driven by some of the best producers in the game. I'll also give it up to Jake One's White Van Music from 2008 and DXA's DXA vs The Rhythmonster from 2011.

There's just waaaaaaay too much stuff being released nowadays for me to give anything a serious listen. It's just too time consuming to even check stuff out, and the task to even begin doing so is intimidating to me. The amount of time i listen to something newer has also dropped dramatically since the 80s/90s and even 2000s. I would spends months with a few album in steady rotation. I have seen a trend, and i don't know if it is still like this, where an artist will release an album, and almost immediately it will be declared a classic after less than a few days, if that, worth of listening. Then many will move onto the next interesting release which might be the very next week. I guess this is a function of having access to everything at your fingertips, and there not really being any more barriers of entry. That's just my take. I'm sure there's been classic albums released in the last 20 years that I will probably never get the chance to hear because they weren't identified quickly enough before being forgotten due to the sheer amount of releases being constantly bombarding us. That's my rant. Sorry!

Oh, that i didn't realize there was a philflava podcast, I'll definitely have to check it out.
