Philaflava 100 Greatest Obscure Tracks

Post by Thereallex »

HI Fam,

10 years ago, we dropped a selection of obscure tracks.

Shit was dope. But i lost it. Otherwise it wouldnt be fun.

Have asked for this in the requests section many times, so i think this deserves to be threaded again, as many new followers could get a history lesson and discover less spinned jams and rare tracks.

My pleasure. Don't expect HQ tho, some of these mp3s date from 2008.

For a second, I thought you meant the 100 Forgotten Favorites... Completely forgot about those 250... Unfortunately I can't come up with this one, missing too many songs.

I noticed the quality on some tracks was a bit sketchy. Everyone was less aware or less concerned with quality back then and just happy to have the music!

Has Mase 'Drug Wars' surfaced in better quality since then?

@PTS, yeah, i know. That was the problem back then too, but those wree the only available web rips ; if anyone has a white label for this, damn that would be great.

@step one, well, thing is like other rare tracks, this is the only version available. Mike Nice was the one that unleashed this version, if i remember correct, then that was the gem, and bad audio, that several mixtapes recycled over and over, like Mase Murdas'Home tape.

Too bad, but in many cases, this is as good as it gets and there is no better quality

Will check those 250 tracks and see what i can come up with...

I've got the original download from 2008. 98 tracks, not 100.

Interesting, now I'm wondering the same. I mean it probably is, but maybe the quality is better?

Future / Futuristic was the producer of that track back in '93, he's the primary beatmaker for B.B.O.; and Beef refers to Beef Tha Thief, also from B.B.O., who I think mainly just does ad-libs and background vocals here. (Somewhat oddly it was Beef rather than Mase's brother Blinky Blink who seemed to be the most tag-a-long with Mase around that time, also appearing with Children of the Corn on Stretch & Bob's show.)

The version in that zipfile sounds like a rip off a mixtape so that 12" must be better. Shame its an expensive and rare one!

the DJ on the tape rip says '93 too, but when I checked the label scan on Discogs it has a yahoo email address which the internet says started in Oct '97 so maybe the track was recorded then and released later (maybe 98?) when Mase was more well known? There's also a Cardan feature on the EP and I think he's a fair bit younger than Mase, who would've been 17-18 in '93

It is a rip off a mixtape. And yeah, one would hope at least.

Exactly, it's a demo from '93 that was never officially released at the time and then was sold to New York DJs later in the nineties sometime after Mase signed with Bad Boy.

The one that was always going around was the mixtape version but I have a second, shorter copy without tags. It was originally provided to me on the Big L forums and is what I gave (along with some other demos I've acquired over the years) to DJ Mike Nice for his Once Upon a Time in Harlem mixtape.

Here it is.

I believe his Get Rude demo (not to be confused with the later B.B.O. track of the same name) was recorded the same year, but I doubt all these tracks featured here were recorded at the same time.

Mase was the first to "discover" Cardan 'cause they were from the same building, when Mase was around twenty and Cardan was seventeen, so a couple years after this Drug Wars demo was recorded. Futuristic still makes music but the Mase / Harlem World era stuff he did would be anywhere from '93 through '97 or so and probably were put out on this 12" sometime after, maybe as late as the early 2000s. Never seen it before now though, so I'm just guessin' there.

I remember when i joined a while ago, I would have thought a lot of those were obscure. But thanks to all you jerks (i.e., serch4beatz and a bunch of other users that have come and went throughout the years), that list feels really commercial.

Real talk though. The appreciation for this era/subgenre/whatever you want to call it has grown such that "obscure" would now have a whole different definition and frame of reference.
