Kwest Tha Madd Ladd-this is my first album

A very solid debut album from 1996
on Rick Rubin's Def American rap imprint
that's now reached cult status
i think this goes for around $60-80 these days.

Image

This cat had a self depreciating comedic charm
an entertainer
real nice storytellin' ability that you could compare to Slick Rick, early Fresh Prince and Pharcyde circa their debut
and more or less song on the album was pretty much a story
usually about girls, gettin' bent, sex and the streets

Beats were yer usual mid 90's boom bap shit
mostly by Kwest himself and a bunch of unknowns
although the must underrated Tony D has a beat on here.

There isn't a bad song on the whole album
but the best cuts were :

101 things to do while i'm with your girl.

I met my baby at V.I.M.

Skin care. (where he censors his own cusswords)

125 pennies for your thoughts.

Herman's head.

Bludeyesneekhuz (through the eyes of a hood).

Damn.

Naturally, this bombed and he's never really been heard of since
thoughts ?

I never really cared for it when it dropped. Maybe I will go back and listen again...You can buy this on cd brand new for $10.

I like this album. Kwest is funny and he tells a good story. I always really liked Disnexone a lot. Right or wrong, I always thought of him as a Pharcyde ripoff (a la Questionmark Asylum or Y'all So Stupid or Yaggfu Front) but a very talented one....

Yagghu Front
haha
that's a little unfair to Kwest
as they were fuckin' wack.

this album is sick. one of my favorite overlooked albums as posted in that for gotten 90's thread. i can see the pharcyde comparisons, but i see kwest as a bit more bugged out/hyperactive. i think you can find this album pretty cheap.

Skin care was my shit ...the Nice N Smooth hook was what did it for me....also he had a 12" for the "101 things to do with your girl" and on the B-side it had him at a battle live where he roasts this fuckin'clown the track is called "Anatomy of an Asswhoopin" and in essence i names my mix Cd after that.

Even if yer tube is mad deep and smooth it's gettin' bruised
you lose, because i got the *UURRGGHHH* that's huge

"..Skinz ya got 'em
i wanna get wid 'em.."

"..Skinz ya got 'em
i wanna get w-w-w-w-wid 'em.."

lubrication was the anthem

everything thru daddys home is top notch...then the record passes thru snoozeville

overall a very very solid record but not a classic as way too many internet heads have tried to make it...in fact its not even slept on...it is what it is

I was reading an article a while ago about Kwest a few years after the album dropped. I can't remember verbatim but I know he was talking about how him and Dan Charnas couldn't meet up at certain points to get some production done. Because Dan Charnas at the time was trying to get his production team off the ground while doing other shit with American Recordings. So, thats how Kwest ended up doing some of the beats on the album. I wish I remembered what magazine it camne from because, I think it was done after he appeared on "5 Star Generals".

I'm not surprised. That record is getting harder to find nowadays.

the lp is decent, nothing more IMO. "what's the reaction" was my joint...

anyone remember when dude tried a masturbation machine for VIBE magazine. his responses were funny as fuck. or when dude got served at Blaze Battle in 98 after he used some homoerotic lines and got booed and called gay. kwest was a funny dude.

it's a funny album and I'm glad I own but it's not classic and there is a hell of a story but how this album actually almost never get released, Kwest mentions it a few times "The label must have been constipated, cos it took a long time to get my shit out"...Kwest was bugged and yeah I do like this album still.

"and while ya working at Mikki D's, ya girls working on deez"
" and while ya at the jam, i'm tapping that clam"

(or something like that it has been a while)

flow's kinda off sometimes but dude obviously has the bboy personality and the beats are pure lampin'...makes me wanna blast this in a drop-top durin' the summertime. the beat on "125 pennies for yer thoughts" is definitely a banger (its also used on that joint off supreme clientele where redman spits one of the sickest verses ever).

That would be "buck 50"
and the sample in question would be "mighty mighty" by Baby Huey

I love that track "I Met My baby at the V.I.M." even though it's lyrically on some corny shit.

I think "Herman's Head" was already long off the air when this track debuted, too.

Solid lp. Can't believe it goes for $60, though.
