ג€œMystagogue Vol. II was only ever released on audiotape, around 1996 or ג€˜97, packaged as a freebie with Slap skateboard magazine. In order to get it you had to buy the issue that was sold in skateboard shops (i.e., it wasnג€™t packaged with bookshop or other newsstand copies). This is pretty early Wu, and at the time they had a board company that sponsored Kevin Taylor, whoג€™s now with Zoo York. The mix itself is gritty Rza, with bits from Tical adn 36 Chambers mixed with jazz and funk.ג€

ג€œThis came in polybagged with a Slap skateboard mag, but you had to get it at a legit skateshop. They were freebies, but werenג€™t sent to bookstores or other newsstands. Super good, really gritty Rza. Funny, it sorta has that indie/MF Doom feel that people are talking about now, but this was like in 1996. ג€

oh, internet.

I'd never heard of this until now. It's a great listen, made especially cool in light of the recent Wu-Tang Jazz mashups. I actually prefer this because of the cuts and overall mixtape vibe.

Props to wu-disciples for the re-up.
This is one of those really rare finds that Wu fans can thank the internet for. Right hereג€™s a Side A / Side B rip of the Mystagogue Vol. 2 cassette that came inside sealed issues of Slap skateboard magazine back in 1996. The cassette / Slap promo was only available at skate shops and was meant to act as a hype tool for the Wu skate team. The file hit about every blog a few years back but a big number of the links have gone dead. Here it is for everybody a 3rd time around. Itג€™s those raw RZA beats you know & love mixed with some jazzy instrumentals and lots of great scratching. The intro is classic too.

Vol1 found through filestube, from a wutang-corp post:

Kool Keith: I wore a straw hat with a feather to the last Source Awards. When I got to Madison Square Garden everybody was looking at me. When I got back home I seen everybody and their mother in their video wearing a fuckinג€™ straw hat with a feather in it.

Tim Dog: ג€œWhat Kool Keith gonna wear? Iג€™m gonna do that shit in my video. Iג€™m gonna wear that shit really quick. Whatג€™s Tim Dog gonna wear?ג€

i remember those tapes, both are very dope, real dark and grimey with that classic Wu vibe to 'em. i wonder who mixed them though, i don't think RZA was ever much of a mix DJ - the cuts on "36 Chambers" were all by 4th Disciple and his DJ album "Wu-Tang Mix" was mixed by Big Kap. my guess is that either Allah Mathematics or 4th Disciple mixed these
