let's discuss the long forgotten genre of "beat em ups&
I've played a lot of them, courtesy of my handy dandy Supergun i now have all of them (the important ones at least). Most people look past these types of games as "boring" or "rental" material or something with no replay value i disagree (maybe if you'd stop hitting "continue" every 2 minutes you wouldnt beat the game so got-damn quickly). I grew up on beat em' ups and my top ten list (if i had to do one off the head) consists of
1. Aliens vs Predator (Capcoms best and overlooked beat em up)
2. Armored Warriors (Capcom and the prequel to Cyberbots...think Final Fight with Mechs)
3. Final Fight (one of the best ever)
4. Double Dragon I and II
5. Streets of rage Trilogy (3 was not that bad)
6. Night Slashers (guilty pleasure....kinda wack but the gore pus it over the top)
7. Zombie Revenge (take resident Evil and Streets of rage and add em together you have a classic)
8. X-Men Arcade (Fuck you WENDIGO!!!!)
9. Caddilacs and Dinosaurs
10. The TMNT series
Back when these games were in style it was all abou you and your friends getting on the machine and talking a gang of shit and possibly conquering all the bosses. Feel free to discuss.

Prolly my favorite genre of all time and the closet thing we have to them in these modern time is Hack/Slash and Action-RPG types. There was some dope ones that came around 99-01 I think like, I had to emulate these of course.

if any one from wants to kick some ass with any of these over XBLA, Id be more than down.

How the fuck is that and the modern Ninja Gaiden's (since the original Xbox) a mash-em up game? Force Unleashed is a makeshift rpg, and Ninja Gaiden is just adventure. I think you're confused, because both of those don't have anything to do with the other games mentioned in the thread. They don't even have multi-player.....360 wrote:Starwars: The Force Unleashed was good. The sequel sucked, though.
The best recent mash-em up has to be Scott Pilgrim vs The World. Shit is banana sandwich especially when you get 3 other players to play with you.

die hard arcade is an all time classic.
same goes for simpsons and x-men.
however, a friend of mine recently bought x-men arcade on the ps3 network and it was weak, not because it aged so much, but just because playing it on a new system after years of playing modern videogames showed how badly the hit detection system was and how repetitive and easy the game is without having to play quarters. plus i think the actual joystick made the gameplay feel much better then a controller.

He was a little emotional and didn't back up his statements very well but he's sort of right. 3D Devil May Cry-type of games are obviously rooted in the classic side-scrolling beat 'em up genre, but they've evolved into something unique to the last console generation or two. There's a huge difference between a fast-paced arcade title like Final Fight and a game like DMC or God of War where you're expected to explore your environment, collect items, and upgrade your abilities and shit.
