The Official Downloadable Games Thread

Post by Combo7 »

How about making this a catch-all thread for downloadable games on PSN and XBLA?

The Cave - Looks like a modern-day Lost Vikings. Every game should be a puzzle-platformer.

The Cave opens up to adventurers in 2013, care of Ron Gilbert and Double Fine

Double Fine and Sega have officially announced The Cave, a side-scrolling, multi-character adventure game coming to Xbox Live Arcade, PlayStation Network and PC in 2013. Led by Ron Gilbert, The Cave sees an eclectic cluster of impromptu spelunkers ג€“ including a scientist, a monk, a knight and a time traveler ג€“ finding their fortunes (and perhaps more) in the titular, mysterious and, err, "sultry" subterranean network. That's right: The Cave can speak.

The rest of the protagonists are silent, but up to three can venture into The Cave at a time. After picking your trio, you guide them all deeper into the seamless network of underground rooms, switching control between each to solve puzzles and exploit their unique abilities. The knight, for instance, can activate a guardian angel that protects him from flames and falls, while the hillbilly can hold his breath underwater forever. (Take that, Guybrush Threepwood!)

The game can be completed with any combination of characters, but certain endings and unique areas are locked to individual characters. Having the knight in your group, for example, will open up the medieval castle and its puzzles for play. And yes, there just happens to be a castle buried deep within in The Cave. With a "New Grog" vending machine (among other inharmonious objects) cropping up in the network's lower bowels, we think it's safe to say that Ron Gilbert's touch is evident throughout the game.

He also programmed the whole thing himself, we think. Probably.

Counter Strike: Global Offensive is coming out Aug. 21 on all systems for $15
Counter-Strike: Global Offensive's lengthy beta is almost at an end. Valve has revealed that they plan to release the counter-terrorists vs. terrorists shooter to the public by the end of the summer.

CS:GO will be on sale starting on August 21st. It'll be available through Steam, PSN, and Xbox Live. The price is set at $15 for all platforms.

Global Offensive is a modern remake of a game that originated as a Half-Life mod in 1999. Teams of counter-terrorists and terrorists face off in objective-based matches. It quickly became a classic thanks to the one-shot deaths, realistic recoil and quick matches.

Valve and Global Offensive co-developer Hidden Path Entertainment updated all of the classic content from CS. They've also introduced new modes, weapons, characters. Additionally, the game's been brought up to today's standards with features like matchmaking and leaderboards.

Gotta love Valve and their pricing. Anyone who's sleeping on Team Fortress 2 (free to play on Steam) is missing out on some greatness.

PSN is useless without plus. You more than make the money back with the amount of free and discounted stuff. Full game bundles are half off for subscribers right now. Makes sense if you don't have to play games right when they come out. In addition to the above titles, castlevania sotn, shank 2, Simpsons arcade, ffV, and many others have been available for free. Trine 2 was just on that list as well. Look into it.

I'll probably sign up for the PSN thing too. I just traded in my old PS3 to cop one of the slim ones. Old one made too much noise, especially annoying for blue ray watching.

Most of the PSN games I've gotten into have been multiplayer, X-Men arcade and Final Fight, Calling All Cars, Lara Croft game, and Fat Princess were all really good. Scott Pilgrim game was amazing, highly reccomend that one.

This post just made me realize that I forgot to try out PS+ before the "Welcome Back" thing expired, fuck! (I did get my two free games though)

Is there a way to get a hold of another free trial for this?

Trine 2 is on sale for 50% off on XBL this week. Innovative gameplay with great graphics. A steal actually for 600 points ($7.50).

Spelunky is out now on Xbox Live Arcade for 1,200 MSP. It's an updated version of the old PC game.

Don't be put off by the way this game looks. It's really good!

Reviews: -

Eurogamer (10/10)
Destructoid (9.5/10)
Edge (9/10)
IGN (9/10)

The game features randomised levels to explore, so there's plenty of replay value. It also has local co-op for up to 4 players. It's a pretty tough game (by modern standards anyway) as when you die, you have to start the level over, but I would definitely recommend giving it a try.

This looks cool. iOS puzzle-platfomer with some strong Limbo vibes.

Just got a free month of PSN, so I'm giving it a try. Been playing the free Pacman game, a great reboot. Downloading a bunch of other shit I haven't played yet, I'll check back.

After wasting money on countless XBLA games that I never play, I think I finally realized that i just don't like side scrolling platformers. I never even really liked them as a kid, I only played them cause that's all there was to play.
