XCOM: Enemy Unknown

Post by perabigail »

didn't see a thread for this. was given borderlands 2 as a gift but i already had it, so i traded it in for this new XCOM. shit is insanely dope. been a long ass time since i've played a turn-based, tactical style game but yeah i am completely hooked. i was a little overwhelmed at first with all of the different things to do but i'm starting to get the hang of it. haven't really fucked with the multiplayer because of how bad i'm getting murked in the single player campaign.

anyone else up on this?

I finished it a couple of days ago. Best game of the year for me. Spam satellites and engineering in the beginning.

I'm a huge, huuggge Xcom Ufo Defense fan, one of my favorite games of all time.

Played the demo of this on XBL and it seemed to stay true to the original game, and incorporate a bunch of new features.

This is on sale at Walmart for $25 tomorrow. I will be coppin fosho.

Yeah it's a really old school game. I genuinely wish I didn't finish it so fast, but it was my own stupid fault.

also, while i'm sure this would be undoubtedly better on a pc, it actually functions great on a console. no complaints whatsoever on ps3.

I reviewed the game for the 360 and it played extremely well. A damn fine game and definitely worth picking up for anyone who enjoys strategy or tactical games.

it took me 6 tries but i finally successfully completed the assault on the alien base. i thought i was going to throw my controller through my tv after i lost my entire crew on 5 different attempts.

Save plenty save often is the old school approach. If one of my troops gets killed I just restart the last save (I think the autosave saves every three turns).

Saving a lot, besides building satellites (helps panic levels and gives you money) and workshops early on is the most important thing in the game.

Also try to capture aliens so you get free guns. Just let the heavy assault guy provide suppressing cover and run up to him with the electro-shock thing. Be aware that you need to research plasma guns before you can use them.

drobs tips are legit and is classic xcom strategy  but it can become a grind to reset over and over again and if you can finish a level with fewer guys it is actually insanely satisfying while also adding to the feel of the game

drob and i fundamentally disagree on playstyle though which is perfectly acceptable for this game as it is dynamic as it is unforgivable (and the og xcoms were pretty fucking unforgivable - you think its hard now oh my GOD really only demon souls beats this game in the amount of pure punishment it delivers - but in completely satisfying and non-gimmicky ways (like rookie soldiers FLIPPING OUT after some crazy shit happens  oh man this is one of the best franchises ever))

so if you dont like the mass engineer playstyle for your base (or are too fucked to do it) i would recommend researching laser weapons and basic armor ASAP and just handle missions as you can handle them without losing too many countries (losing no countries obviously preferable) when you raid a base or a big ufo make sure that all your guys possible have armor and at least your big ballers have laser weapons and laser pistols. a laser pistol is really underrated as to how effective it is because they are accurate and still do good damage and never have to be reloaded.

if you have a sniper dont just chill the fuck with that guy, use that guy as an attacker from afar and pretty close. be sure he is equipped with a laser pistol. if you gave him the team-sight upgrade get that motherfucker a laser rifle asap and maybe a scope. it is well worth the time and effort to slog through a corridor you know is empty while overwatching everyone else and set him up high where havoc can be wreaked every single turn. maybe with a friend for protection if things get nutty.

while some prefer the assault overwatch & then attack/explore mode of movement i prefer the attack-with-shotgun-motherfuckers and snipers. i give my assault guys med packs because they are constantly behind the front or on the flanks. i also do the support specialist build like this; sprint ability - TRIPLE MED PACK ability. i then sprint these guys all over the place to heal motherfuckers. usually i bring one of them, sometimes i bring two of them.

also; when im not going to get fucked (ie base raid, alien battleship raid) i try to bring in multiple soldiers that i rename 'stnsldr1 rk2' on the last name to remind me of their role/loadout and rank. i keep these guys equipped with mostly non-laser pistols and of course the stungun thing so that i can wittle motherfuckers down when no one else can and since they are almost always together in a group (up to groups of 3 on a 6 man capacity but at least 2 in most cases) if one stun misses the other stun will probably hit and you can come different ways and multiple times if one of them gets capped and you didnt anticipate it or were taking your chances. the lowest ranked soldiers in any given squad are automatically stun soldiers because they have to get close so they will probably die quickest if someone is going to die. you see what im saying? that is years of time tested hard earned shit right there. in the og game you could either stun BATON them down like literally standing next to them or do a ton of research for this inaccurate stun launcher thing or you could smoke an alien out with smoke grenades, rockets, fire, etc. shit was fucking AWESOME.

heres another tip but some are not believers in this either, as your casualties can flow like water if youre not careful; when youre guys are maxing out on their rank or getting close when youre doing any sort of routine ufo shootdown (though only rare cases and limited numbers do this on terror sites - which are fucking awesomely hard already) bring in a bunch of rookies. you bring them in bunches so they will level up quickly all together you see what im saying? you bring one rookie basically you have to slow down to give that guy some action you see what im saying?

also; some people find the missions easier if you research/engineer the tanks/platforms. i do not do this because i prefer to be controlling as many dudes as possible but some people are awesome with the tanks. just fyi

anyway good luck to you commanders  share your strategies and tales

ps if anybody wants the og games i have them all (although the first is still the best because the others are either boring (spaceship only game) or unwieldy (real time strategy across a whole city is like what the fuck but still awesome)

ric: Colonel snipers are beyond insane in my opinion. You can have two of them with squadsight and just make em take turns firing from a higher level on an open map. Also in the zone ability is completely broken with a good sniper + pulse sniper rifle :ohsh: .

A good strategy is to have one heavy, one assault, one sniper and three supports, so that each one has his own support unit i.e. medic (every support can carry three medkits), so you can heal both the main unit and the support one. Support units are really good in my opinion. You can have em move for three squares further or allow reaction shots when not in overview (when you're being fired upon). They can also have 3 medkits. They can suppress fire so you can capture aliens. Also when you get a support unit to major you can have an additional item in the inventory which is really sick.

Also the MOST important thing by far imho is that you move just once per unit. Don't dash (with the exception of the assault units with run and gun on). The worst thing is you dash somewhere and get fucked up by some mutons and whatnot because you can't overview/fire/hunker down. This is a problem when you get civilian rescue missions (take more assault units). But still it's better to lose a few civilians, than a major.

Also I hate it when I discover a pack of mutons with the last move in my turn so they get to shoot first. Even with titan armor you can get one of your units killed in a hurry if you're facing a sectopod as it can fire twice for 10 or so dmg.

Pro-tip: get ghost armor for your assault class unit :ohsh:

Pro-tip2: kill these fuckers first. ImageI hate them. They can fuck you up especially in the early rounds, and turn civilians/team members into zombies. Which can then turn into chryssalids. Don't get me started on their walk radius.

@drob
yeah snipers are fucking awesome. another good team build is to get one with team sight and one with snapshot and then the snap shot one is the team sight ones spotter and you can play games with motherfuckers all day with 2 guys having huge coverage if you do it right which also frees up your other 4 guys to gain the numbers advantage and go in heavy, which is doubly good because 4 guys is just enough but not too much to go in with some serious fire power but not be completely exposed to getting grenaded or rocketed or mind controlled the fuck out of the game

here is another tip for anyone reading this looking for tips. i cannot tell you how long it took me to fully realize that if you have the right weapons you can shoot through/destroy pretty much anything in your path. if an alien is hiding behind something annoying and you have the man power with the right weapons - just destroy the cover. it is a huge time and energy saver, especially if your guys are positioned just right and you dont want to move them too much

not sure what system you're playing this on, but my ps3 copy had an insert with a code for some extra dlc. when you put in the code, it opens up character customization a little more. once you go into the customization, you can change the color of your armor (32 different options) and this is super beneficial in differentiating your characters when your on the battlefield.

Resurrecting this old thread.

A friend recently gave me a copy of this on PS3. I've started a game on easy to get my bearings, as I've heard this is a super hard game. Are there any basic strategies I should be employing, especially in regards to base building and investing money in research and items?

Research is really important. Plasma weapons is where it's at, and my favorite the blaster launcher. Titan or ghost armor.

great ressurect. I still play enemy within. fucking mechs and Gene dudes rule. mechs are like insane once you get the foundry upgrades for them and start upgrading suits

if they make a terror from the deep and it sucks on ps3 I'll seriously consider purchasing a ps4 once I actually have money
