How do I set up a website?

Post by stupidregister »

This is probably the wrong place to put this but I figured it would get the most traffic without annoying the whole board.

I'm thinking of starting a minor business venture and was wondering about what it takes to make a decent website. I'm just looking for something free, nothing too flashy, just enough to put some text, pictures, and links.

I've never gone about attempting something like this so any help would be appreciated.

If you want free, try either http://www.blogger.com" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; or http://www.wordpress.com" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;. They're both basic and offer plenty of templates to choose from.

Yeah, I'd recommend Wordpress too. It's pretty simple to use and once your site is set up, adding content is dead easy.

I'm trying to turn it into an online store but I'm such a rookie, I don't know how to do any of that. There's nowhere to put a cart or a payment or anything, it's just like a blog with a bunch of entries?

i personally haven't done that before so I don't have any tips. do research.

alternatively go to http://www.wix.com/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

it's great for beginners and you can easily set up a payment system.

If you're setting up an online store, I wouldn't go with a free hosting option as it doesn't really instil confidence in your site's visitors.

Give SquareSpace a look. It's not free, but they offer hosting, WYSIWYG design tools, templates, and e-commerce options for a reasonable price.

Thanks and I know what you mean, it's not a good look. But I don't really want to sink any money into this process until I know I'm committed and have an idea of what I'm doing.

Does anyone have experience trying something like this?

I can't use PayPal (I got banned for bullshit reasons) so I'm trying to find an alternative method of payment. Does anyone know anything about Google Wallet? Or can I cash a check made out to a company name? Or can someone send me a blank cashier's check that I can fill out? I'm trying to remain as anonymous as possible and I know how shady that sounds but I don't want a bunch of strangers finding out a bunch of private info about me.

Thanks to all who have replied.

In this age, no one is going to physically mail a payment for anything. Google Wallet is great. I haven't tried this, but you might want to look into https://www.braintreepayments.com/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;.

I don't understand how GW works. You have a bank account linked to an email address, right? But then how does someone issue you a payment?

Looks pretty good for starting out. I am currently in the same boat as you but decided to just learn everything from scratch. I am now busying myself with HTML, CSS and Jekyll (a static site generator).

I will tell you how it goes and even hopefully offer help if I can.

So much shit to learn, but if I want to stay employable I have to know everything (be 'full stack')

Appreciate the look. This is more of a hobby for me than a business so I tried to keep it as simple as possible for myself. I doubt this will take off but it was worth the shot.

Yeah, don't that that'll cut it in 2015.

A few friends of mine sell stuff via Big Cartel

Yeah I doubt it will either. I'm trying to get on the Google Wallet. PayPal sucks.

Peep Shopify, it's the shit. You don't pay anything unless you're making money, and it's super easy to use.

Thanks for the advice, I'll give it a look. The payments and stuff are taken care of? There's a monthly fee?

Excellent - now you just need to market yourself properly. I haven't made much progress in the web dev front lately - I should get off my ass and start reading. Trying to make sense of node.js

Yeah, that's part of the problem. Any suggestions for that? I've tried to get a facebook presence and I've posted on here a little bit but advertising is more expensive than I thought it would be.

I don't get web dev stuff at all but this gets the job done.

Try Twitter my dude - it might take a while to develop a following, but once you do you are set. You only need to make a tweet, and everybody's attention will be on you.
