Problems with Internet Explorer

My internet explorer is fucked. Everytime I try and click on a link which opens a separate window, my explorer locks up and I get the "not responding" message. This started happening yesterday for no apparent reason. Yesterday afternoon I downloaded the Windows Security updates, but I don't see how that would effect anything. Anyone know what's up?

Edit: actually don't read what I wrote, just go here: http://killspyware.shorturl.com/

I don't know, does your computer have a lot of spyware?

Even if it doesn't, read the spyware thread that is at the top, especially my last post. I can't really get down with helping someone with Internet Explorer problems.

No, I don't have any spyware, in fact I rarely download anything other than music. I'm running a virus scan right now, but so far its come up clean. This sucks

I don't know, I stick with what I know I guess. I'm familiar with IE and I like it.

Are you up for rolling back your updates to pre-yesterday afternoon?

There are a few .dlls which control hyperlink functions that could have gotten corrupted during the install. Rolling back and then reapplying might be easier than trying to walk you through repairing corrupt dlls.

See my last (or second to last?) post in this thread, talks about reinstalling IE:

I noticed that thread earlier and it sounds like the same problem I have. I'm running windows file protection right now, hopefully that works. I'll come back if it doesn't. Thanks for the help!

I ran file protection and it did not work. I followed these instructions from the other thread...

If you are having problems only with Internet Explorer 6, proceed as follows:

[Start] [Run] [Regedit]
Registry Key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Active Setup\Installed Components\{89820200-ECBD-11cf-8B85-00AA005B4383}
Modify/Create the Value Data Type(s) and Value Name(s) as detailed below.
Data Type: DWORD // Value Name: IsInstalled
Setting for Value Data: [Change the Value from 1 to 0]
Exit Registry

Once you have made the appropriate registry changes use the link below to download and install Internet Explorer 6. The Internet Explorer 6 download includes Outlook Express 6. Reboot and test for proper operation.

Download Internet Explorer 6:

http://www.microsoft.com/windows/ie/dow ... efault.asp

Once I get to the page where I am supposed to download IE 6, I try to click on the download link and my explorer freezes just like before. I need a way of getting the download without clicking on any links. This is fucking driving me nuts.

You can copy and paste links into the address bar, right? Or does that fail as well? Just do a ctrl N and it will make a new IE window for you.....hopefully that doesn't freeze up too....

Also, you can try start -> run -> iexplore *followed by the url*

Don't include the *'s.....

This is kindof hard to explain, but I am not given a URL, just a box that says "download" when I scroll over the box, no url appears, when I click on it, it freezes.

I found this article which seems to deal with the same problem I am having

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/281679

I was following the steps in the resolution section, when I attempted to restore Msjava.dll, I was given a message which said "the specified module could not be found". Could this be part of the problem?

Ok, this is worth a shot.....you may need to register the dll but here is the msjava.dll off my PC:

http://s38.yousendit.com/d.aspx?id=2NP8 ... 3U5J36BTSK

Just pop it into the system32 folder in your windows directory....

See if you can pick up where you left off from there....

Thanks alot for your time man, but its still not working. I don't really know what else to do, so I'm just going to get my friend's dad to take a look at it, he can usually fix whatever I can't.

MS Java is outdated. You are far better off using Sun's Java, which is a free download: -

http://www.java.com/en/

As MS JavaVM is no longer supported by MS, you might want to remove it altogether. Instructions for doing that are here: -

http://www.windowsitpro.com/Articles/In ... ab=Article

Also, check out this MSKB article for your problem with opening windows: -

Thanks, but I actually ended up fixing it myself. The MSJava Squ1d sent me fixed everything after I registered it.
