Tarantino VS Scorsese - Better use/selection of music
You know the deal, you've worn a second hole in the Pulp Fiction soundtrack before you even hit proper puberty and you're air guitared Layla while bodies popped out of the back of a garbage truck. These two are masters of using pop music on film. Pick one
It's useless to try and pin down a particular defining musical moment for each, there's too many and everybody got their own faves. For me this would probably come down to Rags to Riches in Goodfellas vs Across the 110th street in Jackie Brown.
special shout out to Cameron Crowe and Richard Linklater, both of whom are also good in this department

Scorsese. Nothing Tarantino's done with music can compete with the "House of the Rising Sun" sequence in Casino, the "Give Me Shelter" sequence in Goodfellas, and that Irish punk jig song by the Mighty Mighty Bosstones in credit sequence in The Departed. Also, you've got to give an old man like Scorsese props for using "Thief's Theme" so deftly.

Not at all, i'm nowhere near the biggest QT fan but i got to give credit where it's due - imo in this area he could give Marty a run for his money. As a director there is obv no comparison, but strictly on teh music side it's a different story. If nothing else you have to give him nerd cred, QT goes out of his way to dig up some fantastic obscure shit while Scorsese a lot of times goes for obvious favorites.Trademark wrote:SHOULD HAVE BEEN A SHUT OUT.......SCORSESE...

Well it depends what you're looking for.
I ALWAYS walk out of a Tarentino movie with the urge to buy the soundtrack because he manages to find weird/obscure songs that I want to listen to on repeat. I dunno what kind of record collection the guy has but I'd love to pillage his shit for samples.
But as far as use of music IN FILM, it's Scorcese no contest. Tarentino can do cool but when it comes to adding emotional depth through music, he lacks subtlety and you still feel like you're watching a nerd-pastiche. Scorcese on the other hand can take some REALLY obvious music that I wouldn't care to listen to otherwise and craft INCREDIBLE sequences with it. The use of girl-groups in Goodfellas stick out: chances are, I won't listen to any of those records but MAN do they make for an excellent counterpoint to mobsters shooting the shit out of each other. You get the feeling that Quentin wanted to show off this cool song and built a sequence around it while Scorcese had a great sequence and then found the right song to push it into classic territory.
So I guess what I'm saying is that Quentin chooses better music, but Scorcese uses it far better.
Vote: Scorcese.

surprised I'm posting in this thread, but while scorsese songs do fit the scenes well, they're almost too popular/too easy. It's like if Time/Life had great movie scoring skills with an adeptly thrown in Here's Music NOW jam thrown in every now and then. hearing a song I've already heard hundreds of times actually takes me out of the movie a little bit (kind of like watching a huge a-list actor and never forgetting that you are watching that huge a-list actor instead of getting into the character).

you guys act like he is throwing in Britney Spears, Boulevard of Broken Dreams is no more or less obscure then Stuck in the Middle With You... While most of the stones stuff is very popular he throws some decently obscure stuff in there and both can be accused of throwing popular music in but lets not forget THIEFS FUCKING THEME!!!!!!!!!! Scorsese wins...

I just notice it more with Scorsese than with Tarantino, that's it. Personally, I just don't like hearing music I recognize in movies (unless it's embedded -- I forget the film word for this), because I instantly start thinking about how the song matches the scene. In example: I really thought the music in Bottle Rocket was awesome because I had never heard any of that shit before, and it really matched in tone. Like all things Wes Anderson the music selection has gotten so twee and tired that it's just obnoxious now, but at the time I really appreciated it.
In any case, I care little enough to absolutely agree even if I don't. Scorsese wins because of thief's theme.

not that big a fan of theif's theme, not that big a fan of scorsese. i know, i know.
scorsese just isn't that interesting to me. not saying he makes crap, not saying quentin's god, but i can remember lots of instances of quentin using music in a film in an interesting way, while i can't remember a single use in a single scorsese film. go ahead & blame me for being a wack viewer, but that's how i remember it.

yeah he is and every time I hear Eric Clapton's Lola, all I see is that scene with the Helicopters and the pasta sauce from Goodfellas.boogie shoes wrote:scorcese is the father to that whole style.
Same with the Rolling Stones in Casino and many others,Raging Bull, Mean Streets.
My memory escapes me, but what was the song playing when Tommy stabbed the dude with the pen in the bar?
yes, but more often that not, songs he uses are from the era of the time the movie was set in.drizzle wrote:Not at all, i'm nowhere near the biggest QT fan but i got to give credit where it's due - imo in this area he could give Marty a run for his money. so what, by this logic we would have to give him credit if he decided to use AY BAY BAY in the departedJaz wrote:yes, but more often that not, songs he uses are from the era of the time the movie was set in.drizzle wrote:Not at all, i'm nowhere near the biggest QT fan but i got to give credit where it's due - imo in this area he could give Marty a run for his money. I bet that Scorcese could make great use of Ay Bay Bay. It'd be tough but I'm sure he could do something dope with it. He's Scorcese.drizzle wrote:so what, by this logic we would have to give him credit if he decided to use AY BAY BAY in the departedJaz wrote:yes, but more often that not, songs he uses are from the era of the time the movie was set in.drizzle wrote:Not at all, i'm nowhere near the biggest QT fan but i got to give credit where it's due - imo in this area he could give Marty a run for his money.
