shitty performances by respected actors

Post by Blockhead »

i happened to catch "the happening" the other day on cable and ,man, is marky mark the worst. shit is pure comedy.
it may be a stretch to call marky mark a good actor but he's done well in a handful of movies (don't sleep on "fear", he kills it in that). so i was thinking of other "respected" actors who screwed the pooch big time...
like forrest whitaker in "street kings" and "species".
or
al pacino in anything he's been in in the last 10 years.
i know there are loads more but i'm hung over and half retarded right now.

feel free to add on.

Nic Cage pretty much dominates in Adaptation, Moonstruck, Raising Arizona and Leaving Las Vegas but is a horrible actor in everything else. Doesn't mean some of those movies aren't good, it's just that the acting isn't.

if he's good enough for Stanley Kubrick he's good enough for me
(he's not very good though, but I would say he's respected)

from IMDB:
Norman Mailer, in the director's commentary on the DVD, said that he was counseled to cut the ending of the scene in which Ryan O'Neal's character Tim Madden reads a note from his ex-girlfriend Madeline informing him that his wife was having an affair with her husband, and he exclaims, "Oh God! Oh Man! Oh God! Oh Man!" because of O'Neal's poor performance. Mailer kept it in because he thought the poor line reading actually added something to the picture. O'Neal, who had been friendly with Mailer, turned on him, as the bit revealed his shortcomings as an actor and embarrassed him.

Glover in saw is :lock:
renee zellwegger is terrible in ANY movie

I didn't think Crowe was THAT bad in virtuosity. the movie was campy as hell regardless.

I also didn't think Vince Vaughn was that bad in into the wild. can't think of any other serious roles he's done

I thought he did a good job in 16 blocks. He was phenomenal in Something The Lord Made.

He was PERFECT in "Bamboozled," better than Diddy in "Monster's Ball" and good on Chapelle's Show.

agree with a few of these, but zellwegger wasn't in 310 to Yuma

she was horrible in leatherheads, as was everyone imo

a rapper playing a rapper is a fish-in-a-barrel role. Obviously Mos is not that kind of rapper, but it was easy to nail down. Damon Wayans delivered in that movie.

I actually enjoyed Mos in Be Kind Rewind and enjoyed that movie. Gondry did a nice job toning down the weirdness. He went too far in Science of Sleep.

but that's not what this thread is about.

Samuel Jackson owns this thread for 5 years running. He's a hollywood whore. I love the man, but he dials in so much shit.

off the top, last Sam role I thought he did some major work in, maybe, Black Snake Moan?

I dunno about big time or respectable, but Dominic West's acting in the latest Punisher movie was incredibly bad. Great movie though.

Great actors can sometimes act according to the shitiness of the movie their in.

Except for DeNiro. He's good even in shitty movies and I think that's why he seems like such a miserable bastard.
