Bryan (Andrew Rannells, "Girls," "The Book of Mormon") and David (Justin Bartha, "The Hangover") are a Los Angeles couple, and they have it all. Well, almost. And just when they think the stars will never align, enter Goldie (Georgia King, "One Day"), an extraordinary young woman with a checkered past. Emily Owens, M.D. (The CW)
Image

At long last, Emily Owens (Mamie Gummer, "The Good Wife") feels like she is an actual grown-up. She can finally put her high school days as the geeky-girl-with-flop-sweats behind her. She’s graduated from medical school, and she’s beginning an internship at Denver Memorial Hospital, where, not-so-coincidentally, her med-school crush Will Collins (Justin Hartley, “Smallville,” “Passions”) is also an intern.
So why does everyone keep warning Emily that the hospital is just like high school? She will soon finds out the hard way – her high school nemesis, the gorgeous, popular Cassandra Kopelson (newcomer Aja Naomi King), is also a new intern at Denver Memorial. Another fellow intern, Tyra Dupre (Kelly McCreary, “White Collar”), warns Emily that the cliques at the hospital are all too familiar: the jocks have become orthopedic surgeons; the mean girls are in plastics; the rebels are in the ER, and Tyra has her own awkward place as the principal’s kid – her father, Dr. Tim Dupre (Harry Lennix, “Ray”), is the chief resident. Tyra latches onto Emily as a new friend, and immediately begins confiding in her – the fact that Tyra is a lesbian, that she hasn’t come out to her father, that she is interested in dating a certain nurse – nothing is too personal for Tyra to share with Emily. (Premiers October 16th)

Nashville (ABC)
Image

Music legend and entertainment icon Rayna Jaymes has been one of the industry’s top female vocalists for two decades. After working tirelessly to elevate her game, Rayna suddenly discovers her passion for the business is not enough to compete with the new generation of talent lighting up the charts. She is reluctant to accept the emerging trend in the business and refuses to be steamrolled by her longtime label, which she helped build. When they give her an offer she can’t refuse, Rayna is forced to accept the harsh reality that she’ll have to start over and reinvent herself if she plans on being relevant.
Offstage things aren’t much easier for Rayna, whose father, Lamar Wyatt, is Nashville’s most powerful businessman. Their distant relationship is strained by years of resentment and powerful secrets that begin to boil over when Lamar and her sister, Tandy, encourage Rayna’s husband, Teddy, to run for office. For Teddy Conrad, this might be his time to share the spotlight instead of being the man behind the woman. For years he’s competed against Rayna’s greatest love… her music. He’s been haunted by her romantic entanglements, which he thought were buried in the past, but now his choice to align himself with her father could send Rayna running back into the arms of her soul mate.
Juliette Barnes is sexy, sassy, and she’s got trouble written all over her. She’s the hottest act in the business and she’s not about to let anyone stand in the way of her success, much less Rayna James. On her way to the top, an even bigger set of circumstances will cast a shadow on her girl-next-door image. But Juliette is calculating, has an insatiable appetite for fame, and will do whatever it takes to leave her hard knocks past behind. Everyone in Nashville has a dream: Deacon Claybourne is the band leader whose unrequited love is constantly played out in the lyrics of familiar songs; Scarlett O’Connor is the beautiful undiscovered songwriter; Avery Barkley is a young misguided musician; and Gunnar Scott is an up and comer on a collision course with Scarlett.
“Nashville” stars Connie Britton (“Friday Night Lights,” “American Horror Story”) as Rayna Jaymes, Hayden Panettiere (“Heroes”) as Juliette Barnes, Powers Boothe (“MacGruber,” “24”) as Lamar Wyatt, Charles Esten (“Enlightened,” “Big Love”) as Deacon Claybourne, Eric Close (“Chaos,” “Without a Trace”) as Teddy Conrad, Clare Bowen as Scarlett O’Connor, Jonathan Jackson (“General Hospital”) as Avery Barkley, Sam Palladio as Gunnar Scott and Robert Wisdom as Coleman Carlisle. (Premiers October 10th)

The Neighbors (ABC)
Image

Marty Weaver (Lenny Venito) just wants the best for his wife Debbie (Jami Gertz) and their three kids. That’s why he’s moving them to Hidden Hills, New Jersey, a gated community complete with its own golf course. Marty is certain that their new home will be a dream come true. And then, they meet the neighbors.
The residents of Hidden Hills are a little… different. Larry Bird (Simon Templeman) introduces himself as the “leader” of the community. Then, he presents his wife, Jackie Joyner-Kersee (Toks Olagundoye) and their two sons (yes, they’re named after famous athletes -- Dick Butkus and Reggie Jackson).
After Debbie and Marty frantically try to make sense of the weird neighbors -- very European? A cult? Amish athletes? -- they discover that the entire Hidden Hills community is comprised of aliens from the planet Zabvron. Turns out the Zabvronians have been holed up in Hidden Hills for the past 10 years, awaiting instructions from back home. And the Weavers are the first humans who have ever lived amongst them.
At first, the Weavers are ready to cut and run. But the aliens seem harmless enough. And there is a lot of closet space… So, they decide to stay and help their new neighbors adapt to life on this confusing planet we call home.
As the Weavers and the aliens face the struggles of everyday life together, they discover that some things -- the ups and downs of marriage, the desire to be a good parent and raise a happy family -- are universal. Intergalactic, even. And the Weavers realize they’ve found an ally in the family next door... even if they do cry out of their ears.
The Neighbors stars Jami Gertz as Debbie Weaver, Lenny Venito as Marty Weaver, Simon Templeman as Larry Bird, Toks Olagundoye as Jackie Joyner-Kersee, Clara Mamet as Amber Weaver, Tim Jo as Reggie Jackson, Ian Patrick as Dick Butkus, Max Charles as Max Weaver and Isabella Cramp as Abby Weaver.
The Neighbors was created by Dan Fogelman (Cars, Tangled, and Crazy, Stupid, Love), who is also an executive producer with Aaron Kaplan (GCB, Terra Nova), Jeff Morton (Modern Family) and Chris Koch (Workaholics, Modern Family), who also directed the pilot. The Neighbors is from ABC Studios. (Premiers September 26th)

Chicago Fire (NBC)
Image

From renowned, Emmy Award-winning executive producer Dick Wolf ("Law & Order" brand) and creators Derek Haas and Michael Brandt, the writing team behind "3:10 to Yuma," comes the high-octane drama "Chicago Fire," - an edge-of-your-seat view into the lives of everyday heroes committed to one of America's noblest professions. For the firefighters, rescue squad and paramedics of Chicago Firehouse 51, no occupation is more stressful or dangerous, yet so rewarding and exhilarating. These courageous men and women are among the elite who forge headfirst into danger when everyone else is running the other way and whose actions make the difference between life and death.
The pressure to perform on such a high level has a way of taking a personal toll, sometimes putting team members from the Truck and the specially trained Rescue Squad at odds with each other. Despite any differences, this is an extended family, and when it's "go time," everyone inside Firehouse 51 knows no other way than to lay it all on the line for each other. When a tragedy claims one of their own, there's plenty of guilt and blame to go around. Lt. Matthew Casey (Jesse Spencer, "House"), in charge of the Truck, tries to carry on, but butts heads with the brash Lt. Kelly Severide (Taylor Kinney, "The Vampire Diaries") of the Rescue Squad - and each blames the other for their fallen team member. Adding to the turmoil, Casey, unbeknownst to his colleagues, is in the midst of a separation from Hallie (Teri Reeves, "Three Rivers"). (Premiers October 10th)

Elementary (CBS)
Image

Elementary stars Jonny Lee Miller as detective Sherlock Holmes and Lucy Liu as Dr. Joan Watson in a modern-day drama about a crime-solving duo that cracks the NYPD’s most impossible cases. Following his fall from grace in London and a stint in rehab, eccentric Sherlock escapes to Manhattan where his wealthy father forces him to live with his worst nightmare – a sober companion, Dr. Watson. A successful surgeon until she lost a patient and her license three years ago, Watson views her current job as another opportunity to help people, as well as paying a penance. However, The Restless Sherlock is nothing like her previous clients. He informs her that none of her expertise as an addiction specialist applies to him and he’s devised his own post-rehab regimen – resuming his work as a police consultant in New York City. Watson has no choice but to accompany her irascible new charge on his jobs. But Sherlock finds her medical background helpful, and Watson realizes she has a knack for playing investigator. Sherlock’s police contact, Capt. Tobias “Toby” Gregson, knows from previous experience working with Scotland Yard that Sherlock is brilliant at closing cases, and welcomes him as part of the team. With the mischievous Sherlock Holmes now running free in New York solving crime, it’s simple deduction that he’s going to need someone to keep him grounded, and it’s Elementary that it’s a job for Watson. (Premiers September 27th)

Beauty and the Beast (The CW)
Image

Catherine “Cat” Chandler (Kristin Kreuk, "Smallville,” “Chuck”) is a smart, no-nonsense homicide detective, who is haunted by her own tragic past. When she was a teenager, Cat witnessed the murder of her mother at the hands of two gunmen. Cat would have been killed too, but someone – or something – saved her. No one has ever believed her, but she knows it wasn’t an animal that attacked the assassins…though it was strange and terrifying, it was human.
Years have passed, and although she thinks about her mother every day, Cat is now strong and confident, a capable police detective working with her equally talented partner, Tess Vargas (Nina Lisandrello, “Nurse Jackie”). The two women make a good team, and have become close friends while working on countless homicide cases under the supervision of their tough-but-fair boss, Joe Bishop (Brian White, “The Shield,” “The Cabin in the Woods”). Cat has also become close to another co-worker, the medical examiner Evan Marks (Max Brown, “The Tudors,” “MI-5”), and they’ve developed a fun, flirtatious relationship that could easily turn into something deeper – if Cat would let that happen. However, much to the concern of her younger sister, Heather (Nicole Gale Anderson, "Make It or Break It"), Cat’s romantic inclinations tend toward bad boys.
While investigating a new case Cat and Tess discover fingerprints that lead to a handsome doctor named Vincent Keller (Jay Ryan, “Terra Nova”), who was reportedly killed by enemy fire while serving in Afghanistan in 2002. Digging deeper, Cat learns that Vincent is actually still alive. For mysterious reasons that have forced him to live outside of traditional society, Vincent has been in hiding for the past 10 years. With the help of his childhood friend J.T. Forbes (Austin Basis, “Life Unexpected”), Vincent has been able to guard his terrible secret – when he is enraged, he becomes a terrifying beast, unable to control his super-strength and heightened senses. Cat is stunned when Vincent admits he was the “animal” who saved her the night of her mother’s murder. Vincent doesn’t admit the whole truth – he is emotionally tied to Cat and has been watching over her for years.
Cat agrees to protect Vincent’s identity in return for any insight he may have into her mother’s murder. Thus begins a complex relationship between Cat and Vincent, who understand that their connection is extremely dangerous for both of them. Cat’s secret obsession with Vincent puts a strain on her relationship with everyone around her, and Tess is especially troubled by the feeling that Cat is keeping something from her.
Perhaps the most surprising element of their relationship is that Vincent soon becomes a secret but important part of Cat’s detective work. During the years he spent hiding in the shadows, watching over Cat and other innocents, Vincent learned a lot about the darkest parts of the city and the people who live there. His sharpened instincts, incredible strength and human compassion become invaluable to Cat as she works to bring criminals to justice.
As she slowly comes to terms with Vincent’s monstrous alter-ego, Cat senses she can trust him in ways she hasn’t been able to trust any man before and, despite the obstacles between them, she realizes that she’s safer with him than anywhere else. (Premiers October 11th)

Malibu Country (ABC)
Image

Country music superstar/actress Reba (Reba, Tremors) returns to television as a wife and mother whose world is turned upside-down when she discovers that her country music legend husband has a cheatin’ heart.
On her way to becoming a country star herself, Reba put her career on hold to raise a family. Husband Bobby always emphasized family values in his music, but with the very public discovery of his numerous affairs, Reba decides to not stand by her man. Now, with a divorce pending, Reba packs up her sharp-tongued southern mother, Lillie Mae (Lily Tomlin, Laugh-In, Damages, Desperate Housewives, West Wing, Nine to Five, Nashville), and her two kids and U-Hauls it straight to sunny California to begin a new chapter in life. Leaving Nashville in the rear view mirror, they start over at their Malibu residence -- the last remaining asset they have, and Bobby’s former secret love nest.
Once the most popular boy in his Nashville high school, Reba’s teenaged son, Cash, finds himself feeling positively average compared to the good looking, affluent Malibu boys -- a fate worse than death! On the other hand, Reba’s teen daughter, June (Juliette Angelo, New Year’s Eve), never really fit in with her peers. In Malibu she blends in perfectly and finds a new best friend in Sage, an openly gay neighborhood boy who embraces his sexuality. Tough-as-nails mom Lillie Mae discovers the serenity of Southern California living and fully embraces her new laid-back, relaxed lifestyle. But Reba learns that relocating to Malibu is going to be quite a challenge to her traditional southern values. The West Coast seems like the polar opposite of Music City, and she feels like an outsider. Her gregarious and very liberal new neighbor and Sage’s stepmother, Kim (Sara Rue, Less Than Perfect), doesn’t have many friends and immediately attaches herself to Reba, enthusiastically offering to mentor her in becoming a little less country a bit more California cool.
When Reba discovers that trying to revive her career is going to be an uphill battle, she befriends Geoffrey (Jai Rodriguez, Queer Eye for the Straight Guy), the assistant to her new music agent. With his help and unorthodox methods, she might yet have a chance to become a chart topper. Still, in the end it’s family that matters most to Reba, as each member of hers learns to view this new Malibu lifestyle as a chance to begin anew.
Malibu Country stars Reba as Reba, Lily Tomlin as Lillie Mae, Sara Rue as Kim, Justin Prentice as Cash, Juliette Angelo as June and Jai Rodriguez as Geoffrey. (Premiers November 2nd)

This season's new shows seems real weak. I'm only interested in 3 of them: 666 Park Avenue, Revolution, and Elementary, although I am reluctant on that last one because I know I won't be able to not compare it to the great BBC show, Sherlock.

Vegas and maybe Revolution, Id be interesting to see how Chiklis does as a mobster. Its easy to make fun of Abrams but I thought the Star Trek movie was pretty good, I was less cultured back then though.

I watched half an episode of the Kaling show and christ I wish I hadnt.

I seriously never bother with watching the first season of network tv shows. I'll wait to find out if something is worth my time and then catch up later.

Kinda curious about Elementary, though I'm sure Sherlock is much better. Vegas sounds like it should be on cable. Everything else looks like doo doo butter.

Also:
Catherine “Cat” Chandler (Kristin Kreuk, "Smallville,” “Chuck”) is a smart, no-nonsense homicide detective
These words do not go together.

Revolution had promise but it's pretty ham-fisted. You can catch it on Hulu already. Mindy Kaling's show is just bad. The one with the gay couple is like Modern Family Lite, which was already like Arrested Development lite, so...

that arrow show is probably going to be ridiculously gay but I'm a huge green arrow fan so I sort of feel obligated to at least check it out. My guess is it will be on some wild homo smallville type shit

i'm curious too simply because i'm a huge Sherlock Holmes nerd still riding the rush of how incredible Sherlock is, but then I consider the facts in hand:

UK: let's bring back our most beloved character, update him for the modern era in logical ways, make sure that the chemistry between the leads is preserved in way that still rings true for the og but allows for the modern setting, pay sly fan service to the source material in clever ways, etc....

US: yo that sherlock show is doing big things in Britain, let's do that shit.. but umm.... LETS HAVE WATSON BE A HOT ASIAN BITCH, EVERYBODY LOVES HOT ASIAN BITCHES!!!! YES!!! NOBODY IS EVEN GONNA KNOW THE DIFFERENCE, READING CAUSE IS FOR FAGGOTS!!!!!

Sue Vertue, executive producer of Sherlock, had this to say:

We understand that CBS are doing their own version of an updated Sherlock Holmes. It’s interesting, as they approached us a while back about remaking our show.
At the time, they made great assurances about their integrity, so we have to assume that their modernised Sherlock Holmes doesn’t resemble ours in any way, as that would be extremely worrying.
We are very proud of our show and like any proud parent, will protect the interest and wellbeing of our offspring.

A copyright specialist was asked if the BBC could take action against CBS. She replied:

The concept of a new Sherlock Holmes is unprotectable. But if the unusual elements of the BBC series – the modern settings, characters, clothes, plots and distinctive visual style – were closely reproduced in the CBS version, that could form the basis of a potential copyright claim.

I'm sure CBS is being very careful with this series, but I have to say that Elementary looks closer to Sherlock than it does the Robert Downey, Jr. movies. Taking a serious tone rather than a comedic/action one. I don't see how CBS can flip this and make it look original.

The thing about the Downey movie, the first one at least, is that even thought the tone was changed the creators still payed very close attention to the source material and managed to re-purpose it for their own needs in a way that still felt oddly faithful, even thought on the surface it looked like they completely wrecked the whole concept. This CBS one on the other hand seems more faithful on the surface because it keeps a serious face and allegedly sticks on the cerebral side, but in reality the changes are completely arbitrary. They were likely done for demographic pandering and may actually be more destructive to the original's dynamic than anything Richie did.

For example, in the original stories there are references to Holmes being unexpectedly proficient in martial arts, so him being handy in a fist fight is actually not out of character. But considering the character's general mistrust of women, Watson being one is far far out of the ballpark of plausible re-inventions.

God network TV fucking sucks. Who the fuck greenlights these projects? If I was an exec, I would just say "bring me a screenshot of your show with the cast posing in the douchiest way possible and I'll decide from there."

Whoops, looks like someone beat me to it.

Metro looking whiteys? Check.
Token black guy? Check.
Quirky but cute girl? Check.
Homo vibe? Check.

Let's make us a TV show.

Will watch the show with the monkeys. Want to watch a few of the Last Resort because I just want to see how the hell they are going to make a TV show out it.

Watched Revolution and The New Normal on Hulu today.

Both of 'em fucking sucked. If these don't get cancelled I'll hate America.

I will watch 666 until I'm sure it bores me. I give it 4 weeks.

I will watch Revolution until I realize that the actors suck. I give it 3 weeks.

As much as I want to marry Mindy, I will not watch her show. Most tv comedies never make me laugh.

I will attempt to watch Arrow until I realize that I'm watching the CW and that this show will contain unnecessary panned shots of the environment and overly long close-ups of the horrific actors that got. I give it 28 mins.

Last Resort might hold me because I'm a big Braugher fan. However, not enough blood, violence or sex will mean I will have to catch up on the episodes around January.

Vegas is the only thing worth peeping (and even that will probably suck).

If you are a man and you choose to watch any of those other programs voluntarily there is a strong likelihood you have had a penis in your mouth.

the pilot for the mindy project was surprising funny despite being somewhat ridiculous and setting itself up for a seemingly predictable romance, it did have stephen tobolowsky
