Citizen Kane wrote the rules on how movies are made. I am hard pressed to find a movie made today that you cant directly lead back to Kane be it story structure or filming technique.

yea but by the same token watching star wars for acting and plot development is roughly the same as watching porn for acting and plot development.

this is very much a double edged sword. the idea that a movie could succeed entirely on special effects and spectacle, which star wars proves conclusively, is the reason why hollywood now cranks out so many shitty sfx driven franchises with very little regard to the quality of the other elements of the movie.

and i don't have anything against this kind of thing, it certainly has it's place and is often very entertaining, but there's also a lack of balance now. too many studio-backed movies that just go bang, not enough that elicit actual emotion or thought. some of the greatest movies of all time were produced within the hollywood system, but that kind of quality is almost gone now.

Yeah I agree, but I was more so talking about the actually technological advancements like steady cam, sound editing, etc.

Steadicam was around for quite a while before it made an appearance in any Star Wars movies.

But you do have to give Lucas credit for being the first major director to use digital cameras for a studio film.
