HBO Go to Be a Standalone Service in 2015

Post by Dan »

HBO Go will no longer require an HBO subscription beginning in 2015. It's still early and I'm sure there will be many caveats. No word on pricing or even if a cable TV subscription will still be required.

I'm paying $19.50/month for HBO (and about 10 other HBO channels) and I never watch anything live on there. I only use it for HBO Go, so if the price is right, I'd dump it for just the HBO Go part of it. Of course, I'm sure it'll be up to your cable provider to decide if they want to allow people to order it.

What's a fair price that you'd pay?

The headline itself is great news. Still worried about all the caveats that might be attached to the service. "We will work with our current partners.” is a line that isn't exactly promising.

ISP's could block it, though. Just like if you want to watch MLB.tv during the playoffs, your ISP has to be one of the providers listed in order to access it.

I really enjoyed that it was announced approximately fifteen-minutes before Netflix's Q3 earnings report.

The new service has a name and a price.

HBO Now will be $15/month and will launch in April.

I'm paying $20/month for HBO/HBO Go, so I may drop that in favor of HBO Now.

why pay $20 a month for something you can get for free?

Because you'd get access to all their shows ever on any device that supports it?

for me its roughly the same reason why i drop off my laundry instead of doing it myself. the extra 10$ is worth the time I save for myself by not sitting in the laundramat and folding shit, and in this case the extra 20$ a month is worth the time i'll save on downloading and the convenience of having everything on hand at once

plus i'm already saving a shitload elsewhere by not spending as much money on DVDs and streaming/downloading movies instead more.

Word. That makes sense I guess. Since I never have a reason to watch stuff on the move I have little use for it. I pretty much only watch tv on an actual tv, except for the occasional movie on my ipad when traveling or whatever.

But still, you could use that $240/year to buy pretty much every new HBO release on Blu-ray and own them forever.

I don't have cable, so for me NOW would make it simpler to watch shows like GoT that I now have to login to someone else's account to watch.
