Homer vs George vs Al Bundy

Post by drizzle »

Some claims of George being the greatest sitcom character of all time in the other poll, which is a valid argument, but I think these two give him strong competition. Obviously there are other possibilities here so I'm leaving a write in vote as Other, feel free to be wrong by naming Larry or less wrong by naming Kenny Powers or whatever.

Still gotta go with george.
Wouldn't vote homer cause, as great as he is, he is a version of something that came before him. The dopey fat loser husband has been a staple of sitcoms forever. Al Bundy was amazing too but George's character is so deep. Bundy was pretty shallow, by comparison.

On a side note, I do give props to Al Bundy being the first sitcom dad who openly sick of fucking his wife and not the reverse that is much more prevalent in TV.

I feel like you're underrating here big time. The character and this show in general are much smarter and more nuanced satire on American culture than we could've ever appreciated while were growing up with it. It actually covered a lot of the same ground as the Simpsons in that regard. Both Homer and Al riff are based on the same blue collar slob archetype and both lovingly tear it to shreds.

Bundy and it's not even close

That entire show was basically a variation on the same 5 jokes repeated ad nauseum, and he sold it every single time. The gawd Marcy + Al >>>>

I hear that. But I still feel like george was new territory for TV. That whole show opened the door for lovable sociopaths and george was the ultimate. Sure, you could say he's a version of a woody allen character but, even in that, the derangement of George was it's very own thing.

Is there any value in starting Married With Children from the start and watching it to the end in 2015? I've seen countless loosies but I'm not sure if it's worth it in the end.

nah, like the simpsons it really hits the stride around season 3 and keeps up with it for about 5-6 seasons, but then runs out of steam and keeps getting renewed for another couple of years. so anything from ~3-8 or so is gold, the rest is of variable quality.

Word, I bought the series box set of Married With Children years ago, still haven't gotten through the second season even. I need to put it back on the top of the pile.
For me, the word greatest means its got to be Homer. Probably the most recognizable tv character in history. And even if the "dopey fat loser husband" character had been done before, its never been done better.

Not a Simpson fan, and I haven't watched (or heard of) any of the other shows referenced by OP. I suppose its an age thing. Sticking with Costanza.

Seinfeld is a great show. I watch it every time its on. I'm planning on watching everything from start to finish some time soon.

I've literally never heard of Married With Children. Simpsons is ... eeh. I don't know. Lost interest. Keep in mind that I'm younger than a lot of the posters here so place my post in context.

I had an argument with my cousin a couple of days ago regarding Seinfeld. She said she doesn't like Seinfeld because it 'looks dated'. I won the argument and put her in her place but it really made me realize how old Seinfeld is.

It's pretty wild when you realize the early seinfeld seasons were on the same time as twin peaks.

i don't like al bundy nearly as much as you guys/some of my friends. i like what he represents as the unapologetic masculine essence in all of us. maybe more realistic character than the other two. but dint find him as funny tbh.

Of course peak seasons of MWC isn't touching the Simpsons or Seinfeld, but Al Bundy is the greatest sitcom character ever.

Homer Simpson. The fact his character is based upon an archetype is besides the point.. The Simpsons has the best overall writing & the most jokes out of the three shows in question

George. I love Homer too. It's hella close, but George edges him out. Maybe because he's human rather than a cartoon?
