Post by Dan »

A new year brings all new shows. Here’s what’s premiering for the month of January.

The Rap Game (Lifetime)
Image

The next big rap star is about to be unleashed beginning New Year’s Day when five emerging young hip hop artists, ages 12 to 16 years old, are given the opportunity to rhyme and flow with highly sought after producer, Jermaine Dupri in the all-new unscripted series, The Rap Game (#TheRapGame). These young rappers will be immersed in the Atlanta hip hop scene with Dupri at the helm as their mentor. Queen Latifah and her partner Shakim Compere will executive produce under the Flavor Unit umbrella along with Dupri on the series that will air Fridays at 10 PM ET/PT. Each week, special guests such as Usher, Ludacris, Da Brat, T.I. and Silentó will join Dupri to help mold the kids into the next big, young rap star. (Premieres January 1st)

Cooper Barrett's Guide to Surviving Life (FOX)
Image

Wouldn’t it be great to have a friend who has made all the mistakes in life there are to make, and then tells you exactly where he went wrong, so you don't have to? Cooper Barrett's Guide to Surviving Life is a new comedy that explores what we all go through on our way to figuring out what life is all about. Cooper Barrett (Jack Cutmore-Scott, Kingsman: The Secret Service) still doesn't have the job he wants; he's accidently fallen in love with his across-the-hall neighbor, Kelly Bishop (Meaghan Rath, Being Human); one of his roommates, Neal (Charlie Saxton, Betas, Hung), just can’t seem to dump his bodybuilder girlfriend; his other roommate, Barry (James Earl, Ground Floor, Glee), is a “loveable jackass” who can’t stop getting into trouble; and his 40-year-old-brother, Josh (Justin Bartha, The New Normal, The Hangover franchise) is constantly popping in to hang with the fellas and get some peace from his wife, Leslie (Liza Lapira), and their two kids. The one thing they do have is each other. As Cooper struggles to survive each of life’s many challenges – a night in jail, an inappropriate text he never should have sent, an ill-advised household pet – he will guide us through the often-messy, always-hilarious ordeal, so that our lives don’t have to be nearly the entertaining disaster that Cooper’s is turning out to be. (Premieres January 3rd)

Bordertown (FOX)
Image

From Family Guy's Mark Hentemann comes Bordertown, a new animated comedy about two families living in a Southwest desert town on the U.S. - Mexico border. The series takes a satirical look at the cultural shifts occurring in America, where the U.S. Census forecasts that by 2017, ethnic minorities will become the majority. Set against this increasingly diverse backdrop, the comedy explores family, politics and everything in between with a cross-cultural wink. Bordertown centers on two clans: the Buckwalds and the Gonzalezes. Bud Buckwald (Hank Azaria, The Simpsons) is a married father of three and a Border Patrol agent who is just a tad behind the times and feels slightly threatened by the cultural changes transforming his neighborhood. He lives next door to Ernesto Gonzalez (Nicholas Gonzalez, Sleepy Hollow), an ambitious family man, who has been in the country less than 10 years, but is already doing better than Bud – which, it turns out, is a bit of an issue for Bud. Bud is married to Janice Buckwald (Alex Borstein, Family Guy), both the wisest and most oblivious member of the family. The Buckwald kids include Becky (Borstein), a socially awkward, big-boned geek; Sanford (Judah Friedlander, 30 Rock), a loser who thinks he’s a player; and Gert (Missi Pyle, The Exes, Galaxy Quest), a beauty pageant-obsessed five-year-old with a pet pig. Meanwhile, living the American Dream next door are the Gonzalezes, including Maria (Stephanie Escajeda, 100 Things To Do Before High School), Ernesto’s no-nonsense wife; their son, Ruiz (guest voice Efren Ramirez, Napoleon Dynamite); and their 21-year-old nephew, J.C. (Gonzalez), a graduate student who is engaged to Becky and frequently butts heads with Bud. As Bud and Ernesto’s paths begin to cross, their two families soon become bound by romance, conflict and, perhaps most importantly, friendship – a word that means the same, no matter what side of the border you’re from. (Premieres January 3rd)

Killing Fields (Discovery)
Image

There are isolated places in America that appear untouched by anyone. But underneath the surface, these beautiful landscapes reveal a much more sinister reality - a dumping ground for bodies and a home to countless unsolved murders. On Tuesday, January 5 at 10 PM ET/PT, Discovery Channel will premiere its first-ever true crime series titled Killing Fields and take viewers inside an active criminal investigation as it unfolds. Shot in real time, the series follows the hunt for the killer.
Killing Fields will go inside a case that went cold nearly two decades ago in the small community of Iberville Parish, Louisiana, located just 15 miles from the state capitol, Baton Rouge. In June 1997, Louisiana State University graduate student Eugenie Boisfontaine was last seen near LSU's lakes. Two months later, her body was found nearby in a watery ditch with evidence of blunt force trauma to her head.
But who did it and why? Was it a single act of violence? Or was her murder part of a much bigger string of killings? Between 1997 and 2003, there were 60 cases of missing and murdered women in the area that went unsolved. And to make it even more complicated, the Baton Rouge area had multiple serial killers operating at the same time with two of the their victims living on the same street as Eugenie. Could these murders be connected?
Detective Rodie Sanchez was assigned to the case in 1997 and hasn't stopped thinking about it since. He makes the bold decision to come out of retirement and gets permission to re-open the case. Rodie is determined to solve the mystery and make good on a broken promise to Eugenie's mother: to find the person (or persons) responsible for killing her daughter.
"You never forget your first murder or crime scene," Rodie said. "Once that gets in your blood, you want to be a cop for the rest of your life. I had a good life in law enforcement for over 30 some years. I missed it and thought about [this case] every day."
Joining Rodie in the chase is a young hot-shot detective, Aubrey St. Angelo, who has a knack for reading people and isn't afraid to ask the tough questions. However, the two can't solve this case alone - they are joined by top-notch detectives at the Iberville Parish Sheriff's office.
With advancements in forensic science and DNA analysis, a lot has changed since 1997. But will this be enough to crack the case for good? And will Rodie be able to finally rest and move beyond the case that has forever haunted him? (Premieres January 5th)

Resurrected as a younger, better version of himself, with physical abilities of which he never dreamed, a re-animated Pritchard (Rob Kazinsky, True Blood) is given a second chance at life. Mercy Street (PBS)
Image

Based on real events, Mercy Street takes viewers beyond the battlefield and into the lives of Americans on the Civil War home front as they face the unprecedented challenges of one of the most turbulent times in our nation’s history.
Set in Virginia in the spring of 1862, Mercy Street follows the lives of two volunteer nurses on opposite sides of the conflict: Nurse Mary Phinney (Mary Elizabeth Winstead), a staunch New England abolitionist, and Emma Green (Hannah James), a naive young Confederate belle. The two collide at Mansion House, the Green family’s luxury hotel that has been taken over and transformed into a Union Army hospital in Alexandria, a border town between North and South and the longest Union occupied city of the war. Ruled under martial law, Alexandria served as the melting pot of the region: with soldiers, civilians, female volunteers, doctors, wounded fighting men from both sides, runaway slaves, prostitutes, speculators and spies.
The intersection of North and South within the confines of a small occupied town creates a rich world that is chaotic, conflicted, corrupt, dynamic and even hopeful — a cauldron within which these characters strive, fight, love, laugh, betray, sacrifice and, at times, act like scoundrels. This series is not about battles and glory; it’s about the drama and unexpected humor of everyday life behind the front lines of war. It’s a fresh twist on an iconic story, one that resonates with larger themes we still struggle with today. (Premieres January 17th)

Lucifer (FOX)
Image

The Devil has come to Los Angeles…
Based upon the characters created by Neil Gaiman, Sam Kieth and Mike Dringenberg for DC Entertainment’s Vertigo imprint, Lucifer is the story of the original fallen angel. Bored and unhappy as the Lord of Hell, Lucifer Morningstar (Tom Ellis, Merlin) has abandoned his throne and retired to L.A., where he owns Lux, an upscale nightclub.
Charming, charismatic and devilishly handsome, Lucifer is enjoying his retirement, indulging in a few of his favorite things – wine, women and song – when a beautiful pop star is brutally murdered outside of Lux. For the first time in roughly 10 billion years, he feels something awaken deep within him as a result of this murder. Compassion? Sympathy? The very thought disturbs him – as well as his best friend and confidante, Mazikeen aka Maze (Lesley-Ann Brandt, The Librarians), a fierce demon in the form of a beautiful young woman.
The murder attracts the attention of LAPD homicide detective Chloe Decker (Lauren German, Chicago Fire), who initially is dismissive of Lucifer. But she becomes intrigued by his talent for drawing out people’s secrets and his desire to dispense justice, doling out punishment to those who deserve it. As they work together to solve the pop star’s murder, Lucifer is struck by Chloe’s inherent goodness. Accustomed to dealing with the absolute worst of humanity, Lucifer is intrigued by Chloe’s apparent purity and begins to wonder if there’s hope for his own soul yet.
At the same time, God’s emissary, the angel Amenadiel (DB Woodside, Suits, 24), has been sent to Los Angeles to convince Lucifer to return to the underworld…can the Devil incarnate be tempted toward the side of Good, or will his original calling pull him back toward Evil? (Premieres January 25th)

I'm just glad Opie hasn't cut that beautiful hair/beard combo.
Looks like Winter's Bone with 4-wheelers. Could be good, WGN taking this tv thing seriously. Manhattan is supposedly pretty great but I haven't gotten a chance to watch any of it yet.

Glad you find these posts useful. I wish I could definitive sources for European shows. I'd love to make these posts universal. Usually I don't discover shows outside of the US until I've read buzz about them on Twitter the day they premiere. The last such show was Tripped, which I really enjoyed.

There's a few gems such as Jagten and Deutschland '83 out there, but most Europeans are only really up on American TV shows anyway. Not saying there aren't any good shows in Europe, but save for some Brit shows, not many people really seem to care.
