Giallo to Slasher to Self-Aware

Other than the first Friday the 13th, the rest of the sequels were all cut by the MPAA by the way, I definitely remember nudity in Part 4 though.
In that respect I fully appreciate the importance of the franchise. But I was too young during the 80's to really have that perspective. Looking at the movies in an isolated context just makes them appear to be not all that special. Or maybe I'm just an asshole.

They're definitely dated if that's what you're getting at and judging them on their own individual merits would dampen most people's spirits. Despite their flaws, I do enjoy them, mostly the earlier movies for their naivet

Forgot to add that Tom Savini's gore in the first one is some of the best FX-work I've seen in a slasher from that era. Most of the 70's slashers are quite tame visually, from what I recall right now, I guess the early 80's was when they really took that aspect to the next level. Tenebre also comes to mind, that movie is insanely violent.

Those hands were grossing me out.

The headshot in Maniac was crazy.

I've said this before on the :phila: but I once met Savini and I asked him if he was working on the F13 remake and he did that :jaz: look. Feared for my life.

Should have been the killer in a slasher.

his hands were the killer's hands in The Prowler I know that for sure, don't know about him being the actual killer in any films with him starring in it though.

he was a bit of douche when I met him. i could have met jean luc picard that same day but nah, I grew up on savini's work so I had to meet him and witness one of my hero's act a prick.

Twitch's review of The Wicker Tree. I've waited years for this film.

[quote]REVIEW: ROBIN HARDY'S THE WICKER TREE

The Wicker Man is one of those films that has taken on such a life of its own over the past 38 years. It succeeded against all manner of personality conflict, distribution woes, and production logistics - tales of which are legendary - to pretty much re-mythologize various old pagan rituals and philosophies and has hypnotized and surprised fans of thrillers, art-house horror, and folk-laden musicals. Director Robin Hardy calls The Wicker Man its own genre: The Wicker Man genre. Ironically, the 1973 film is in itself a satire of sorts on the power of belief, but that did not stop its fecundity of myth-making from re-establishing icons (look no further than modern Beltane festivals, Burning Man and other such festivals around the world) in popular culture that went well beyond simple film circles. Christopher Lee, who famously played Lord Summerisle as a mixture of haughty academic superiority and benevolent believer has often claimed The Wicker Man as his favourite film, and this on a resume that spans hundreds of films of all genres, budgets and ambition. Quite simply, the film is one of the greatest movies about the nuts and bolts of religion and the power of belief (a quite separate thing from religion, I assure you) as a tool for manipulation. A thriller, a mystery hidden in plain sight that shocks the audience in its final scene with a power rarely seen in movies, past or present.

So.

How do you top that?

The Wicker Tree is a spiritual sequel from the original director separated by nearly four decades. Expectations are the trickiest of things in pulling something like this off. You are not going to be able to recreate the surprise of the original, as that is quite simply what audiences expect. One has to look no further than disaster of Neil LaBute's remake to understand that it is not a good idea to simply repeat the original film in a location with a few token changes. And Robin Hardy takes a massive risk to re-frame The Wicker Tree as a broad satire. The sacrificial 'heroes' this time around are goodie-goodies all wholeheartedly different type of na

Pretty cool trailer for forthcoming film Death Shadows. A mix between Night of the Comet and Demons 2 from the looks of it, which can't be bad.
Synopsis
Chris is a young man whose parents were brutally killed 11 years ago, on the same day Halley's Comet could be seen from earth. Tonight a new comet is going to appear, and everyone in his building is getting ready for a party to celebrate the event. There's even an apocalypse theory going around. As the night falls, Chris starts to discover that people are acting strange - and it seems to somehow be connected to the comet. People are becoming disoriented and violent, and it doesn't take long before they start mutating into something from beyond this world. In a fight for survival, Chris has to try to escape from his building with the help from some other tenants - but will they make it out alive?

Loved Norwegian Ninja and Troll Hunter and Norway's got another folklore creature feature out this year. The trailer suggests more of a back-to-roots horror movie vibe than Troll Hunter, hence me putting it in this thread rather than starting a new one.

Image
'Thale' is a feature film based on a mythical character in Norwegian folklore called 'HULDRA'. According to the myth a hulder is a beautiful lady living deep in the woods, and it is said that she seduces men that work or hunt in the woods. She hums a beautiful song and lures them to her deep in the woods, and they never return to their village. You can recognize a hulder by her cow tail.

Liking this trailer, hoping the film delivers.

The Sleeper recently got released this week on DVD in the US. Still not sure about it after watching the trailer (it does look better than Gutterballs though), the indie horror tag basically means it's 90% chance of being terrible based on the stuff I've seen. DC's more than positive review, is putting it on the same pedestal as The House of the Devil and while their general reviews aren't exactly reflective of my opinions, it's a certainty that I'm going to check it out in the next month or so.

Sleeper, The (DVD)

Starring Brittany Belland, E. Ray Goodwin Jr., Jason Jay Crabtree, Joe Bob Briggs

Directed by Justin Russell

Distributed by Gamma Knife Films

Just like everything else in this world, what was once old in horror eventually becomes new again. There's no doubt Eighties slasher flicks hold a very special place in the hearts of genre fans everywhere. Back then they were as mean and violent as they were fun and campy. Logic was thrown out the door. Effects were practical and gooey, and there was none of the glossy Hollywood sheen bullshit that seems to be found everywhere. The killers and how they dispatched their victims were the stars of the show, not the hot young vomit-inducing pretty cast.

Yep, there was certainly a lot to like back then. Over the years filmmakers have been trying to recapture that now vintage feel with varying degrees of success. Indie filmmaker Justin Russell not only captures it but nails it to a degree that would make anyone (who didn't know any better) think they were watching a movie from the desired era. Simply put, The Sleeper oozes authenticity.

The story, as you may have guessed, is wonderfully flimsy. Sorority Alpha Gamma Theta is putting on a bash for its new pledges. One that will be memorable not for the girls who show up but for the milky-eyed killer who comes along with them. A madman who stays just out of sight studying our students - when he's not placing deliciously vile phone calls to the dorm that is. Of course he eventually hunts down each chick one by one with a claw hammer being his chosen implement of doom.

Once we get going, eyes are gouged, heads are lopped off, boobs pop out, and all manner of mayhem ensues, including an obligatory disco dancing sequence. What's not to like? As previously stated, the movie is meticulous in its pursuit of recapturing that bygone era. From the soundtrack by Gremlin to the editing and look of the movie, everything is completely spot on and right now stands as the best homage to early Eighties filmmaking since Ti West's amazing The House of the Devil. It will fit nicely on your shelf with Black Christmas, The House on Sorority Row, The Prowler, and the like.

Once you're done chilling in your time machine and resisting the urge to tease your hair up really high, there are some quality special features on tap. Things kick off with a very lively commentary with director Justin Russell, in which his love for the genre totally shines through, and from there we have an hour long making-of, Joe Bob Briggs' hilarious "Drive-In Total" of the flick, and a couple of trailers. Really good stuff that's not to be missed.

With The Sleeper director Justin Russell has created something special. It's a movie that revels in the glory of being what it is: a balls-out and bloody good time. Sleep with one eye open. You'll probably have to considering your other eye will likely be gouged out via claw hammer by then. Highly recommended!

Citadel looks really promising and seems to capture that downbeat nightmarish vibe that's been prevalent in so many recent horror flicks that have sprung from the UK. Polanski's Repulsion seems like a possible influence on this urban set horror flick.

I read about Blackaria a long time ago. Thought it was out already. Doesn't look like it will be as good as Amer but one can hope.

I'm really excited about seeing this French sci-fi soon, (as well as Livid). By all accounts it has many unsettling horror-elements:

<object width="560" height="315"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/PIA8Iy5USRI?ve ... ram><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/PIA8Iy5USRI?version=3&hl=da_DK" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" width="560" height="315" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true"></embed></object>

Will definitely watch that and Livid. Not sure what to do with my 4 remaning tickets. I bought a 6-movies pass.

Other horrors at the Copenhagen filmfestival:

Think I'll definitely peep this stalker-thriller from the REC-director

I should have Blackaria in my hands pretty soon. It's pretty low budget even for an indie film and I'm not expecting it to deliver like Amer did, the acting seems to be particularly awful, but I'm definitely interested in it along with Last Caress. WTF is Glam Gore anyway?

Sleep Tight trailer seems to have potential. Has more promise than that recent mediocre offering, The Resident.

Heard about Lovely Molly a while back, it does look decent but I doubt it'll be another trend-setter nor will it recapture The Blair Witch Project's success. This latest offering seems to be following familiar ground.

Juan of the Dead's promotion has kind of put me off the film in general. Too many films out there at the moment with the "The first horror film from (insert country here)" moniker, besides which, other than World War Z, I've had my fill off zombie flicks for the time being.

This sounds pretty fucking awesome. Don't think Outpost II is out yet, though.

Good news for fans of Nazi-themed horror flicks! The third film in the Outpost franchise has officially gone before cameras and we have all the latest details right here.

From the Press Release
Content is delighted to announce principal photography has begun today on the third installment of the OUTPOST franchise, THE RISE OF THE SPETNAZ. The film shoots on location in Glasgow and Yorkshire.

Kieran Parker (Outpost, Outpost: Black Sun) directs from a script penned by Rae Brunton (Outpost, Outpost: Black Sun). The cast includes Bryan Larkin (Battleground) as the lead Russian Dolokhov, and James ג€œThe Colossusג€ Thompson ג€“ Ultimate Combat World Heavy Weight Champion as The Berserker.

In the third installment of the hit Nazi Zombie action horror movie, Outpost: Rise Of The Spetnaz, we discover the horrifying origins of these supernatural soldiers and see them in ferocious gladiatorial battle against the most ruthless and notorious of all military special forces: the Russian Spetsnaz.

Produced by Arabella Page Croft and Kieran Parker for Black Camel Pictures and Executive Produced by Nigel Thomas from Matador Pictures and Jamie Carmichael from Content, the film is backed by Matador Pictures, Creative Scotland, Creative Film Finances and SWSSC.

Producer Arabella Page Croft said: ג€œItג€™s an exciting time at Black Camel. Kieran is the passionate creative producer behind the OUTPOST world and he has long wanted to tell an origins story. It is a natural progression for him to move behind the camera as director so we are all delighted to support his ambitionsג€.

Matadorג€™s Nigel Thomas said ג€˜Matador are delighted to be involved in the third film in the Outpost series and to be working with such a hugely talented team. Making a prequel to the highly successful Outpost and recently completed Outpost: Black Sun provides an exciting opportunity for us to return to this popular zombie Nazi franchise.ג€™

Contentג€™s Jamie Carmichael said: ג€œItג€™s a fantastic achievement to have created a three film franchise, as that doesnג€™t happen very often in the UK. Itג€™s a testament to the tenacity of the film makers and the quality and strength of the brand they have created. And itג€™s great to be a part of it.ג€

Creative Scotlandג€™s Robbie Allen said: 'We are very pleased to be supporting this installment of Black Camel's series of films. Arabella and Kieran's achievements are a testament to their boundless energy and dedication. With great partners in Matador and Content, this new foray into the evil world of OUTPOST is set to be a significant creative and commercial success.ג€™

He's a maniac, maaaaaaaaaaniac! I'm not mad at this upcoming remake at all. The original was a nasty mean spirited serial killer flick by Lustig, but I was never that attached to it like some. Elijah Wood might actually be pretty good since he was a similar sicko in Sin City and the producer credits provide me with some faith.

Very cool it's debuting in Cannes this year, The Last Horror Film, the unofficial sequel, was set there, so it's kind of a full circle or maybe not.
Maniac to Begin Rampage at Cannes

Color us insanely curious about the upcoming remake of Maniac. It's either gonna turn out incredibly well or pale in comparison to the still spooky William Lustig directed classic. Either way, the people attending this years Cannes festival will be the first to find out.

Added as an official selection, Maniac, will enjoy a midnight screening at the prestigious event. Directed by Franck Khalfoun and produced by Alexandre Aja and Gregory Lavasseur, Maniac casts Elijah Wood in the role of a serial killer who works at a shop that sells antique mannequins. He finds victims on the Internet and stalks them like prey, all the while suffering from hallucinations that throw him back into the past when he was abused by his own mother. In his twisted mind he gains a measure of revenge against his mother with each kill.

Look for more as it comes.

new argentian jawnt La Memoria Del Muerto, heavy heavy giallo vibes. looks kinda abstract but more in the freaky 'wtf is that shit' Jodorowsky/Lynch way then in the minimalist vein of Amer

A couple of cool trailers:

Exit Humanity
<object width="640" height="360"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube-nocookie.com/v/_DExl ... ram><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube-nocookie.com/v/_DExl ... 3&hl=en_US" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" width="640" height="360" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true"></embed></object>

US Civil-War era zombie flick. Liking the cast in this and Molsley actually looks serious for a change. Looks bleak as hell and reminds me a lot of Stake Land oddly enough. Looks very promising.

Chernobyl Diaries
<object width="640" height="360"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube-nocookie.com/v/Pq47T ... ram><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube-nocookie.com/v/Pq47T ... 3&hl=en_US" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" width="640" height="360" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true"></embed></object>

Expecting this to be thoroughly predictable with false jump scares aplenty, the concept however is really appealing and I'm a sucker for mutant savages a la The Hills Have Eyes and Wrong Turn. Doubt this film is meant for anyone other than dumb teens but I wanna check it out regardless.

Exit Humanity looks like it could be really good. I love Civil War era stuff, and it looks like they're playing it pretty straight as a Civil War movie that just happens to have zombies. Definitely looking forward to it. And it's good to see Mosely in it.
