Not everythingon her list is some sappy coming of age novel. There is some good stuff (the Faulkner Books, Anna Karenina, She's Come Undone). You just gotta sort through them.

I'm currently revisiting Great Excepectations.

I read it when I was about 14 but I don't remember much of it so I decided to reread it.

You are correct that she has some good ones. Suffice to say that if you knew the source, you'd be surprised it was an Oprah book.

That having been said, I've read She's Come Undone, and Anna Karenina as well.

Great book on the French Foreign Legion. Not much out there about it until recently. I knew very little going in, but this book is excellent. A memoir from an American who joined about his experiences. Highly entertaining.




The Smart Money by Michael Konik. Konik worked with "The Brains" in the late 90's and helped them place huge bets on sports (mostly football). So feared were "The Brains" that if anyone knew that you worked for them you were instantly banned from betting anything. These are the guys who change the betting lines. Really good book about what happens if you're too good a bettor.

Finished a week or two ago, Crooked Little Vein by Warren Ellis. Defintely check it out, it has a scene with godzilla bukkake.

please tell me you guys have gotten into "what is the what" I was never a big fan of eggers, but my sister works for the International Refugee Comittee (the work is about a sudanese refugee) and highly recommended it. i'm about halfway through and am very very impressed. the subject matter itself is incredible and eggers has constructed the narrative wonderfully and without the pretension that unfortunately infiltrates a lot of his previous projects.


also, the new haruki murakami, "after dark," is definitely worth picking up. from the first paragraph to the last page i was completely entranced. i blazed through it in 72 hours but it has an after taste that lasts for weeks.
