Yes, its on the Oprah bookclub list. Don't even get me fucking started on that!
It's actually pretty fucking good.
Recommended by a good source...I was just kinda shocked when I bought it and it was an Oprah book.
Not everythingon her list is some sappy coming of age novel. There is some good stuff (the Faulkner Books, Anna Karenina, She's Come Undone). You just gotta sort through them.

Currently:
Notes From the Underground - Dostoyevsky
The Bonehunters - Steven Erikson (it's fantasy, but I get my nerd on every now and then)

Just Finished
She's Come Undone - Wally Lamb
Invisible Monsters - Chuck Palahniuk (I've read this so many times. It's like my bible. Anything you could ever want to know about people is in there)
The Serial Killers Club - Jeff Povey.... meh

I'm currently revisiting Great Excepectations.

I read it when I was about 14 but I don't remember much of it so I decided to reread it.

Pip is such a dick.

You are correct that she has some good ones. Suffice to say that if you knew the source, you'd be surprised it was an Oprah book.

That having been said, I've read She's Come Undone, and Anna Karenina as well.

You Shall Know Our Velocity was dope, but I could never really get into any of his other work. I keep reading whatever he puts out though, so he is doing something right.

Just a couple:

Great book on the French Foreign Legion. Not much out there about it until recently. I knew very little going in, but this book is excellent. A memoir from an American who joined about his experiences. Highly entertaining.

Image

The Smart Money by Michael Konik. Konik worked with "The Brains" in the late 90's and helped them place huge bets on sports (mostly football). So feared were "The Brains" that if anyone knew that you worked for them you were instantly banned from betting anything. These are the guys who change the betting lines. Really good book about what happens if you're too good a bettor.

Hey, I been away for a couple weeks so I caught up on some reading...

Just finished:

In the Miso Soup by Ryu Murakami, very good Japanese thriller that also serves as a guide thru Japan's sex industry. It'd make a great movie.

And

Nine Stories by Salinger.

fucking awesome. I am reading a lot of ellroy (obviously). Just grabbed Cold 10 Thousand with my NEW LIBRARY CARD :ohsh: . I was hoping to see some like librarian fantasy fuck chicks there who would be excited to see a strapping young lad like myself in their lair, but it was all 11 year olds, nerdy 11 year olds.

ALso finished this:

Image
fucking lame. Myron Bolitar sucks, says dumb shit and SPORTS FICTION is gay in 99 out of 100 instances. pass (get it? GAAY)

Image
This one is off the chains. Bad ass, depressing, modern, not gay, lotsa porn/whore industry shit, NYC, under 250 pages and under 6 bucks new. COP IMMEDIATELY.

please tell me you guys have gotten into "what is the what" I was never a big fan of eggers, but my sister works for the International Refugee Comittee (the work is about a sudanese refugee) and highly recommended it. i'm about halfway through and am very very impressed. the subject matter itself is incredible and eggers has constructed the narrative wonderfully and without the pretension that unfortunately infiltrates a lot of his previous projects.

also, the new haruki murakami, "after dark," is definitely worth picking up. from the first paragraph to the last page i was completely entranced. i blazed through it in 72 hours but it has an after taste that lasts for weeks.
